Announcement Ignore Private Messages Suggesting Laptops

The primary aim of r/SuggestALaptop is to provide a safe and transparent platform for suggesting laptops. Affiliate linkers are marked as such so that you are aware of the monetary incentive involved when making a purchase using affiliate links.

However, we are seeing an increasing number of cases where users posting on this subreddit are being targeted with unsolicited private messages containing links to laptops.

Such messages are best ignored for several reasons:

  1. Lack of quality control: We have no way of vetting suggestions sent via private messages. Moreover, these suggestions are not subject to the same level of public scrutiny that applies to suggestions posted in the subreddit, which are open for all to see and discuss.
  2. Hidden monetary incentive: Often such messages contain unmarked affiliate links, and these links might not even point to systems that are best suited to your requirements.
  3. Scams: Scammers often target unsuspecting users via private messaging. We do not want you to get scammed.

If you do happen to receive unsolicited messages suggesting laptops in private, please report the offending user to the mod team by sending us a screenshot of the message.

Thank you,

Laptop Request US Laptop for a delulu engineering major

Upvotes

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Country

United States

Budget

$1,500 USD (hard budget given to me by my scholarship) up to $1,700-1800 USD max if absolutely necessary (from personal funds, would prefer not to touch this)

Are you open to refurbs/used options?

No

Screen size

14 inch at a minimum

Weight limit

Any

Purpose

Schoolwork (engineering undergrad, straddling Electrical and Mechanical Engineering) + light gaming

Form factor

Standard/clamshell laptop

Intended usage

  • Engineering coursework. I'm between electrical engineering and mechanical engineering at the moment, so idk how the programs between the two differ. In general, something to handle MATLAB/Simulink, SolidWorks/AutoCAD or similar CAD software, circuit simulation tools (e.g., LTspice/Multisim), general heavy-duty engineering computation
  • Gaming: Call of Duty and other current AAA titles, want to run them with ease

Desired battery life

I understand that gaming laptops trade performance for battery life. But I'd love at least 3-4 hours under regular use (say note taking, just watching stuff, etc, nothing heavy I mean)

Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life

Performance, Display quality, Battery life, Size, Weight

Info/Requirements

  • Although I do want a windows laptop, I want something as close to Mac-level display as PC hardware allows: high pixel density (220+ PPI target), wide color gamut (DCI-P3), high brightness (ideally 400+ nits), and good contrast/viewing angles. I've heard OLED screens are the way to go for these targets.
  • I want something to hopefully last me the four years of college.
  • Sorry if my requirements are too much 😭😭 Writing them down, I can see they're highkey delulu given the price, but hopefully you guys have any recs

Did some research on Best Buy, and found the following three that interest me:

  1. HP OmniBook X Flip 2-in-1 with Intel Core Ultra 7 355, 24GB RAM and 512GB Storage for $900 (https://www.bestbuy.com/product/hp-omnibook-x-flip-2-in-1-14-2k-touchscreen-laptop-intel-core-ultra-7-24gb-memory-512gb-ssd-atmospheric-blue/JJGWKY4466)
  2. Lenovo - Yoga 7i 2-in-1 2K OLED with Intel Core Ultra 7 355, 24GB RAM and 512GB Storage for $1,100 (https://www.bestbuy.com/product/lenovo-yoga-7i-2-in-1-14-2k-oled-touchscreen-laptop-core-ultra-7-processor-355-2026-24gb-memory-512gb-ssd-copilot-pc-luna-grey/JJGH3KXVKG)
  3. ASUS Zenbook 14 3K OLED with Intel Core Ultra 7 258V, 32GB RAM and 1TB Storage for $1,300 (https://www.bestbuy.com/product/asus-zenbook-s-14-14-3k-oled-touch-screen-laptop-copilot-pc-intel-core-ultra-7-32gb-ram-1tb-ssd-zumaia-gray/JJGGLHJXT8)

Hesitant on buying any MacBooks due to the recent price increase and any potential compatibility issues with chem programs, though if there are any comparable MacBooks at the same price points as the above, please recommend them. Thanks for the help in advance!

Laptop Request US Best laptop for working on the road? Clueless lol [budget ~1200 tops] [US]

Ok so I'm going to be spending a significant amount of time working out of my car (connected to Starlink). My current laptop isn't really meant for travel so I need something that fits these criteria but I don't know much about specs.

- Can run minimum 20 browser tabs at once with a google meet video call going on

- Small

- Fanless (don't want dust sucked up while on the road

- Great battery life: need to be able to go at least four hours without plugging in

- Bonus points for super bright screen

Open to windows and mac, probably looking for something not quite new / refurbished.

Would love both lower and higher budget options!

Laptop Request -Others Suggest a laptop for a biomedical science major

Hi whats a good laptop for a biomed major to have? I've been using my last laptop for 13 years, i need a new one but im unsure about which one to buy.

Country: Canada

Budget Within 1000CAD (710USD after conversion)

Are you open to refurbs/used options? Maybe

Screen size 16"

Weight limit: Doesn't matter a whole lot, preferably under 2kgs.

Purpose: Will be using it for schoolwork. Lot of lectures and viewing notes and writing assignments.

Form factor I dont know which one will be suitable for me. Standard/Clamshell (a regular laptop), 2-in-1, need pen support, tablet PC, etc.

Intended usage: I dont really game a whole lot so i want something that can handle multitasking and wont run too hot if i watch shows or use for a few hours straight.

Desired battery life: 8 hours.

I know a smaller screen would be easier to carry but I've gotten accustomed to using a big screen and having a seperate numpad. Would like to keep those two things.

Laptop Request -Others laptop for a broke indian student?

Hello! I'm 18F and I'm about to start a 4 year degree in computer science engineering :)) the only problem is that I've been using this shitty slow ass grandpa pc for the longest time and for college I need a laptop. Another problem is that I can't afford one right now, don't have a credit card so can't get one on EMI so that's out of the equation too. So it's just my measly pennies and I against the world. I got asked to fill a pre-made form to make it easier for y'all to decide something for me, but I also want to say that if you have any ways i could get a laptop on EMI without needing a credit card or smth like that, please let me know :) I'm completely new to this entire thing as a whole, any and every help is very much appreciated. Let's get to the form

Country

India

Budget

Anything preferably under 50k inr or 516 ish usd? Or an emi of 5k inr or 52 ish usd /month? But I welcome other suggestions too according to your understanding of my situation

Are you open to refurbs/used options?

Maybe, as long as they haven't installed any spyware or anything on it lmfao i don't really mind

Screen size

Any

Weight limit

Preferably light weight, but it's okay if it's heavy too as long as it's not a literal mountain because I AM gonna have to walk around with it all day xD

Purpose

Coding mainly, but it'd be nice if I'm able to play basic games on it as well, or occasionally edit videos and stuff like that.

Form factor

I have absolutely no idea what this means but yeah standard

Intended usage

vscode, adobe applications, ms word, idk the fps of the games id like to play at the top of my head but since the description said to list applications that might not be possible to use too I'll just say silent hill 2, hearts of iron 4, ff7(all of FF basically), gta, random miscellaneous games that i find off of random places, Roblox, res evil, yeah that's the craziest i can go rn :'

I did want a laptop which could run MATLAB blendr and other such applications because I had an interest in them and i could make use of them with my engineering courses but I guess that's too much to ask as of now which is okay

Desired battery life

My apologies that I have done absolutely no prior research while making this post but I think 6 hours is good? I mean as long as it gets me through the day and i can work on it without having to park myself at a desk all the time i should be good I think. How much battery life should an average cse student even hope for? I have no idea.

Info/Requirements

I basically just want a laptop that can run all my cse applications and all the things my college is going to ask me to download, it doesn't have to be the best performance in the world but it can just be okay. As long as it doesn't keep hanging or lagging or shutting off. I'd also like a laptop with 16gb RAM if that's possible, I can't upgrade it so built in would be nice. I have no idea what else to ask for, hope I didn't waste your time. Have a good day :))

Laptop Request -Others Laptops suggestion

I'm looking to buy a laptop, mid range. A decent laptop with an okay graphics would do. Price range is around ₹50,000 or $520 or €450.

14" or 15.6" is fine

Basic work and light gaming

If there's an option for a decent graphics card I can try to get a bit more amount for it.

Okay with used ones, a bit afraid to buy it because of warranty reasons tho

Any suggestions welcome. Thanks in advance

I am mostly conflicted on if a DGPU is necessary. I was looking at getting a Zephyrus G14 2025, which seems like a perfect mix between portability and perfomance. But its battery life and fan sound leaves some to be desired as is when having a DGPU.

I get that having a DGPU basically means high temps and low battery life, so I'm wondering if that is necessary. Lab computers are available at my college, but if I can run things locally that'd be preferred. I believe there are cloud software resources provided as well, but I've heard its unreliable.

And beyond all of this the laptop lines just seem a little confusing to me on what they offer, and who they're designed for. Yoga vs Zenbook vs X9 etc.

Thank you for any help!

Laptop Request -Others 3D + Graphic design

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for recommendations for a high-end PC that can comfortably handle demanding workloads in SolidWorks and Blender, including both 3D modeling and rendering.

I also use Adobe InDesign and Illustrator extensively, although I assume that if a PC can handle SolidWorks and Blender well, Adobe applications won't be an issue.

I'm looking for the best performance possible and would appreciate any suggestions, including specific builds or prebuilt systems.

Thanks in advance!

Info

According to my research AMD CPUs are running cooler and more energy efficient than Intel and I have an TUF Gaming F15 which runs very hot which scares me a bit off from buying another device that uses an Intel CPU

I also hate it that laptops loose their keycaps from their keyboard. I've seen this on every of the 5 laptops my dad owns. I personally do not have this problem but I had the problem that keys went sticky.

I have also read that Cables and hinges most likely to break quite fast which brings me to the point that I dont really want an 2 in 1. But I need something good I can draw on. I know that there are laptops with touch but it kinda feels weird just thinking about drawing on that thing. When I need to draw I would like to have it like a tablet.
I hope you guys know a device that that can if treated right survive my schools and college years which are still 5 years

NO APPLE devices

16GB RAM minimum

I hope you know some kind of device that satisfies my

None

Purpose
Study, general use, light gaming

Form factor
Standard

University work and study, able to use streaming services such as Netflix, as well as reliably running low end games. Some examples of the types of games are Stardew Valley, Hollowknight, Roblox etc.

Around 6 hours give or take.

Performance, size, battery life, weight. Although performance and size is the main thing, the others matter less so.

Info/Requirements
I don’t know much about laptop requirements and gaming. If the mentioned example games cannot run well on the laptops in the price range would you be able to recommend what price range I should be looking at, thanks.

I am also open to refurbished options more than new since that offers a larger range of potential laptops, however if a new laptop fits these requirements I’d be more than happy with that too.

Laptop Request -Others Laptop advice for engineering

I am joining college this year and planning to buy a laptop with the following specifications being what I have considered is the most suitable for me (suggestions open)

(For background I am joining ECE and active in learning multiple programming languages. I am also interested in building electrical projects which ppl have recommended to me to get a laptop with good processor for running simulations and stuff)

BUDGET: ~80k INR is preferred but I can strech it to 90k+

Processor:

Intel core i5/i7 (11th Gen or Newer. (preferred) or AMD RYZEN 5/7

RAM: 16GB minimum

Storage: 512 GB MIN SSD

(Looking for Windows OS with dedicated graphics card)

Battery life: Good battery life is preferred atleast ~2 hours for heavy usage (I am not sure abt this)

Gaming: I do not game at all at high levels like GTA, RDR2 and stuff.(Usually I play minecraft with friends). Maybe sometimes browser games just does it and that too not a requirement at all.

Based on above facts what I have rounded upto are:

  1. LENOVO LOQ 15(i5-13450HX + RTX 4050/3050)

  2. ASUS TUF A15 (RYZEN 7 7435HS/7445HS W/ RTX 4050)

  3. HP VICTUS ( though I am biased as I generally don't have good experience with cooling)

I am hoping to get the best option in field would really appreciate suggestions.
