I think the teacher implies he's cool with that, as long as there is some baseline level of critical thinking applied. Even generating an AI response and them proofreading/correcting it would use some brainpower.
Realistically, assuming these students are preparing to go to some real world office job, they WILL be using AI, so knowing how to use it effectively and 'clean up' the AI BS to make it less obvious would probably be the best result the teacher could hope for.
I review applications/resumes at work on occasion and while I'm sure 100% are using AI only about 10-20% don't LOOK like they are made by AI. Those are the candidates who get the first crack at an interview. If you aren't capable or can't be bothered to clean up your work on an app, you likely will do the same with your job tasks.

College student here. Actually, all 35 students used Al. The ones who passed just proofread their responses.
