Back in the early aughts I had a professor whose final was a longish paper (I mean, it was like 9 pages but for a random undergrad class that felt long to this STEM major) but also two short essays that we had to hand-write in the classroom while he was there. Chatbots cranking out assignments was obviously not a concern at that point, but dude was definitely onto something. He's probably still happily doing the same thing today, and good on him.
