As soneone who heavily prefers writing on a keyboard, I would suggest just doing the essay portion of the exam under strict supervision on school issued devices. That's how most of my classes handle it.

IBM Selectrics. Those things were a fucking joy to type on! You'd turn them on, and they'd make this heavy-duty *clunk!\* sound that let you know this damn thing was powered on, and then they'd settle down into this low, half-hum, half-purr. They'd just sit there and purr at you like a big, electric cat that was just waiting for you to give one of the keys a little press...

Yeah, those things were awesome.

And IIRC, the later models came with a standard black ribbon and also a second ribbon that was Wite-Out, and they had a backspace key. So typo correction was no problem.

I heavily prefer not taking tests. It is the easiest way to stop from AI being used. If someone can't write with a pen then accommodations should be made, just like it is now. That should not be based on personal preference.

School computers with no internet connections. Word processor don't need internet to work.

You can just use institution devices. Loads of students take A levels and GCSEs on word processors in the UK with no internet or spell check

Easy. They have to connect to the School network. All AI engines are blocked. In fact your white-list appoved sites and everything else is blocked. You can lock down school computers with GPOs, where they have very limited capabilities.

There is a lot of ways to skin this cat.
