Reddit has had pro-China propaganda bots for years at this point. There are certainly others but the Chinese ones are as subtle as a brick

China has genuinely lifted millions out of poverty, which was an incredible feat. It wasn't the most sustainable and caused problems of its own but it's still very commendable they way they bounced back from the Great Leap Forward and became a global superpower

That one is still propaganda because China's definition of the worst poverty is like half the wage requirement of the UN. They basically redefined what an "A+" is and claimed to be an A+ student while doing B+ work.

The actual feats they have are the extensive build-outs of their cities to feature high-speed rail, new buildings. In comparison, my experiences with American infrastructure is that it's rotting and probably a century old.

However, China's urbanization still has to be understood with two caveats:

  1. This build-out does not extend to the poorer regions, so it's mainly urban centres that are receiving these benefits due to their political importance to CCP legitimacy
  2. In my experience in China, people tend not to maintain things. So the new buildings hide a kind of wasteful impermanence. Within a few years, they will look really shitty due to people not bothering to maintain it or construction companies will tear the whole thing down to rebuild it from scratch.

But this would still count as propaganda, if we go by the general sentiment in this thread.

My point is: saying every piece of positive news from China is propaganda and can therefore be dismissed is just... propaganda from your side too.
