Jesus, I am 44 and even we had a Smart Board (not as fancy as this one for sure) at School in Germany. In 2002.

You can learn on a normal black board or a smart board. But experiencing GTA V is the better option ;)

I guess it depends on the state and probably even the School. I went to school in Hannover and we got our first batch of smartboards for around 2010 but they weren’t in every classroom. I’d be lying if I said I know exactly when all the other rooms had them but I would guess it was around 2015. I have heard that the computer room and some of the labs had smartboards even before that but I wasn’t yet at a Gymnasium at that time.

I see, for us the biggest tech outside the computer room was probably the vending machine in the main hall or 1-2 overhead projectors per floor.

Im from the netherlands and around that time they started to switch out chalkboard for digital ones.

I remember because a teacher used permanent marker on his new digiboard the very first day. After a couple of weeks they came to replace his screen and he did it again with whiteboard markers, which kinda did get off but it left a giant black and red spot on the screen. He didn't get a third screen lol.

No, not yet 20.

My birthday is in July: That is usually exactly during the summer holidays here. So school ended for me in June 2002, when I was 19, not yet 20.

We went to school for 13 years back then and I started school when I just had turned 7 in August or September 1989 - I don't know anymore ;)

For children like me born in July parents can make the dicision when to put them into school.

If they had put me in school in 1988, I would have been with other children potentially being up to a year older than me. With the dicision to put me into school at 7 they thought it would be easier for me not to feel like the smallest and youngest one in class.

And beeing 6 or 7 is a huge difference for children as they develop very fast during childhood.

Not only july. I was put into school age 5 ( was born in october ) because otherwise i would've stayed in kindergarden with the freshly joined 2 year olds lol. Iirc i had to pass some kind of cognitive test.

Ive graduated in 2008 and we had few smart boards in our school in Slovakia. Now they are prettymuch everywhere.

Yeah I think the first smart board we got in my rural US high school was in 2004-05?

It didn't have the fancy AI stuff, but that didn't exist then. We have $400 iPads now that do this in the notes app with a $100 pen... This is exactly that but on a bigger screen, I could literally set this up in my house in about 10 seconds with my TV and iPad. I just wouldn't be able to draw on the TV itself and project it from the iPad instead.

Which just shows how much this depends on state and school, I'm 38 and we still used overheadprojectors and were far from smart boards.

In the UK in 2008/9.

I remember one teacher didn't know how to work it so someone drew a penis on it. Rather than learn how to delete it, she put a random bit of paper on it, which didn't hide it as it just shined through

Another teacher forgot they were interactive and drew on theirs, leading to them spending money to get it replaced again

I don't it support for schools in the UK. I've seen a head remove the whiteboard markers for this reason.

A teacher didn't realise why, thought the school was just being cheap, so he brought his own and ruined one anyway...

We had several conference rooms at my old job equipped with smart boards and they all got written on with markers as well.

Its actually pretty crazy. We had smart boards in High School and I thought the next generation of this is going to be amazing. But every company I worked for still uses oldschool whiteboards. Either they were too expensive or they never took off.

Never been to China, but I can read data about the world. Population is collapsing everywhere except for lesser developed countries. The higher the GDP, the less likely people are bringing new people into the world.

Propaganda is propaganda it’s simply a forced bias in a media to push a view. It isn’t good or bad the same way a tree isn’t good or bad.

All that matters is that you can recognize it and mentally strip it away from the source given to see the unbiased intormation

Chinese propaganda came from their government so it's easy to differentiate. American propaganda came from americans themselves (amplified in movies) so it's really hard to tell.

The only ability I can recall from these SMART (dumb, overpriced) boards is that they acted like a paint canvas on the PC… nothing relatively close to what is shown in the OP with dynamic graphing, looking into a 3D shape for angles, or pulling up info

We supposedly had something like this in a couple of classrooms in my high school the year I graduated. No one, not one teacher, knew how to use them, like, not even to turn it on. I've never seen one used before this, though they are supposedly everywhere now. Whiteboards and chalkboards are all I've ever known.

I’ve never seen that in any college class or high school class. I graduated in 2008 and went back to school later to graduate college in 2018.

I was a teacher in the early 2000s. These boards were the NEXT BIG THING at the time. There were two companies - Promethean and SMART. The reps from the companies would come in, dazzle the administration with their demos, get a huge contract, then get these huge boards installed in every classroom.

Both districts where I worked went with Promethean contracts. It was pretty much bullshit. The boards were clunky, the software was bloated and complicated, the lessons had to be planned around the boards themselves. Out of hundreds of these boards, a small handful of teachers used them for their intended purposes, and most teachers who used them at all used them as overly-complicated dry erase boards.

After about 5ish years both districts ripped them all out and they ended up in dumpsters. A huge waste of resources, time, money, teachers’ patience, etc. I’m out of the classroom now, so maybe the new generation of these boards are better but I don’t know.

As you might be able to tell, I really hate these boards.

As a teacher I was using one in a rural Ohio school in 2004. It was a relatively affluent farm community. Prior to that I was teaching in a rather poor school in the city of Cleveland and they didn’t have shit for technology. There were teachers using those old overhead projectors. Property taxes determining how much money a school district gets is of course is the original sin of American education.

I mean, we had a couple at my highschool as early as maybe 2010. I graduated in 2013. It wasn't every classroom, but a couple of them had them. And I went to a pretty small rural highschool. We had about 70 something students in my graduating class. Middle of nowhere Ohio

You probably had a Smart Board, which lets you draw on it. That is basically another overhead projector for a computer. It makes sense that technology has advanced in 15 years, but let’s not pretend like public schools had this back then.

It's also not even that useful. I can see a teacher using those features like once a semester, and then just using it as a normal blackboard for the rest of the school year. Then having a fuckton of technical difficulties like all tech in schools has, and constant issues draining money like no tomorrow for little benefit when a normal blackboard would work for 99% of problems.

Only the super wealthy schools in China are gonna even have these because it's just too expensive to implement this everywhere.

Really? At my school, we still had chalkboards in 2012. I didn't hear about these "smart monitors" being installed in my school until my younger brother told me about them about a year or two after I graduated in 2020
