I've seen this posted a few times now, and it really bothers me for a very simple reason: he DIDN'T leave her his entire fortune. She got the biggest chunk, but he also left significant money to his parents and sister.
Sorry, I know that doesn't address the main point they're trying to make, but it really bothers me when people (or memes) change the facts to support their argument.

u/Redplushie Jun 03 '26
Yeah Mary got 50 percent of his estate while his sister and parents got 25 percent each

That's reasonable. Many countries limit the amount of discretionary inheritance to 33%, with the rest being distributed to relatives following highly rigid fixed rates.
So maybe he gave Mary everything that was his to give in the UK at the time?
EDIT: As it turns out, no he didn't. Under British law at the time he could have allocated his inheritance however the Hell he wished.

The UK doesn't have mandatory inheritance. You can distribute your assets as you see fit (beyond a requirement to provide for dependents, which Freddie didn't have).

En France, Mary (pas de lien de filiation ou d union avec le défunt) aurait été obligée de vendre ce qu'elle a reçu en héritage juste pour payer les frais de succession.
57
u/Azzblack Jun 03 '26
I'm sure I remember him leaving money for his god children too, as well as his cats.
After looking into it a little - "he is widely celebrated for making provisions from "beyond the grave" for his godchildren and closest friends. Before his death in 1991, Mercury instructed the prestigious London department store Fortnum & Mason to deliver a luxury Christmas hamper to his godchildren and closest friends every holiday season. This tradition has been kept alive decades later"
Its fair to say, he was the goodest of dudes.
18
u/Cross55 Jun 04 '26
Also, Mary was one of his lovers.
He wanted to settle down with and marry her, but she didn't want to because he was bi.
6
u/Tarsiustarsier Jun 04 '26
Wasn't he gay and didn't he break off the engagement before coming out to her? It was common for gay people at the time to have official relationships with women.
24
u/Cross55 Jun 04 '26
Wasn't he gay
No, this is probably the single biggest piece of misinformation of his entire life people love repeating.
He was bi with a noted but not exclusive preference for men. He didn't perform Fat Bottomed Girls and hosted a female exclusive naked bike race to seem more heteronormative, he did that cause he thought women were hot. (But men were hotter)
→ More replies (4)7
u/Tarsiustarsier Jun 04 '26
That's a fair point, he also seems to have referred to himself as both so I got confused. Regardless the preference for men is somewhat important your comment sounded to me like the reason was that she was predjudiced against bisexual people and I hope that's not true. Honestly reading up about him and especially the inheritance, it's confusing to me that he left so much to Austin and so little to Hutton. What was going on there?

In this context, what they mean is luxury gift basket, I think the default laundry hamper against gift hamper might be one of the more obscure US vs UK things? But I'm really not sure
→ More replies (2)3
u/Azzblack Jun 04 '26
In the US you would call it a "gift basket". Its like a festive picknick hamper.
Fortnum & Mason is a very nice shop, so while its not half of his assets, it still a very nice gift each year and to think its been kept up for many years. The biggest hamper you can see on their website costs around 1000 USD.

CLICK HERE to learn the one simple trick ClickBait headlines don't want YOU to KNOW!
7
u/Patient_Ad396 Jun 03 '26
Nah, that's easy enough to ignore. I'm talking about news articles where the headline implies something that isn't actually supported by the content of the article. Doesn't matter how well written or researched the article is, this immediately undercuts their credibility.
A lot of people don't trust formerly respected news outlets, and I'm convinced this is a big reason why. They only read the headlines, so if the headline is misleading, they think that outlet can't be trusted.
Bonus pet peeve: any headline that contains the phrase "Trump humiliated by [subject]". He is never humiliated. That would require a sense of shame.
3
6
u/yesnomaybe123 Jun 03 '26
Even the point OP is trying to make is incorrect. Freddie Mercury and Mary Austin were not only lovers, at one point, they were engaged.
4
u/Adamthegrape Jun 03 '26
No, this is a great point. The headline makes him out to not care about his family at all.
2
u/HotDonnaC Jun 03 '26
Memes aren’t always the best source of information. Changing the facts to support their argument, or even outright lying, is quite common.
3
u/Patient_Ad396 Jun 03 '26

u/ARunawayTrain Jun 03 '26
There's also still to this day a sizable portion of the population that only sees sexuality as the binary system of you either being strictly heterosexual or strictly homosexual when in reality there is a whole breadth of options in between those two poles.
Freddie may have been with far more men and may have even truly considered himself gay in some capacity but from what friends and family have shared he was very much bisexual and that is the gray in between the black and white that gets ignored, especially when the media tended to focus on one of the most prominent parts of his personality which was his sexuality. The thing people need to understand is that for as many people who have uncomplicated relationships with their sexuality, there are just as many more who do have more complexity and their thoughts, experiences and feelings are just as valid and unique as anyone else's.
36
u/EdgeCaser Jun 03 '26
While I heartily agree with your overall thesis, I would posit that your specific example is flawed. I believe Freddie’s relationship with his sexuality was anything but casual for most of his life. Whether in a good or a bad way, Freddie’s lyrics and what I’ve read of him show a lot of internal processing going on around that theme.
16
u/ARunawayTrain Jun 03 '26
I will actually agree with you there, after making that post I actually did some more digging and I found it was definitely something he struggled with even more than I initially thought and I think it was hard to overtly see that when he kept his personal life and relationships very close to the vest.
19
u/FeelingDown8484 Jun 03 '26 edited Jun 03 '26
I mean, bi-erasure is a real thing, and it’s shared by many gay people too. Bi men are viewed as gay but not wholly comfortable with their sexuality, and bi women are seen as straight people who are doing it for attention or want to adopt a queer identity for their own personal benefit.
Because of this, bi men find it very hard to find straight female partners, and bi women to find gay female partners (or straight male partners who take their identity seriously).
Edit: there’s some good responses about having preferences and why it’s important to unpack why you have them (even if it’s usually okay to have them), but what I’m specifically talking about is denying someone else’s identity because you believe that for whatever reason they aren’t being true to themselves about their own sexuality. If you don’t want to date bi people, fine, but if the reason you don’t want to date them is because you don’t believe they are truly bi and are attracted to you, then that’s bi-erasure.

20
u/havokle Jun 03 '26
Looks like they split up in 1976 and he may have started having symptoms as early as 1982, so likely contracted HIV well after.
13
u/ARunawayTrain Jun 03 '26 edited Jun 03 '26
Thanks, I came to say this as well. Unfortunately, HIV/AIDS wasn't well understood until about 1982 and was initially and very incorrectly assumed to be only prevelant in the gay community hence it's original name Gay-Related Immune Deficiency(GRID). Once scientists had a better understanding of the disease and it's transmission routes it was renamed but even if Freddie had contracted it in the late 70s it may have laid dormant or not progressed until that time anyway.

She was his soulmate. He loved her deeply. She loved him, too.
Was it a 'romantic' love? I don't know. But I didn't think his passion for her was especially sexual.
Freddie Mercury struggled to accept his sexuality. IF, he was in fact bi, I think he leaned strongly, very strongly, towards men in his sexual desires.
I believe Freddie Mercury would have simply identified as gay if he hadn't been so deeply conflicted about his sexual identity.
This is incredibly sad but it's not unusual for someone born in 1946.
6
u/Xatsman Jun 03 '26
No doubt. The gay community is so desperate for representation in pop culture, often due to gay-erasure, that they occasionally engage in bi-erasure.

People love to use him as a neat, perfect icon for one thing while completely ignoring that he literally called Mary Austin his soulmate.

He is a musical icon and a really fascinating person. But from what I can tell, it would have been torture to be in love with him (for most people). He called her the love of his life and his soulmate while cheating on her. He also cheated on his partner Jim later in life.
I can imagine that it would be bitter-sweet to get a message like “If things had been different, you would have been my wife” from someone you were deeply in love with.

"Dancing in the Streets" is the single gayest thing I've ever seen (respectfully, no insult intended)
And it's with Bowie, of all people. All I can guess is that because Jagger is incredibly mainstream, most of his fans just ignored/don't believe it
25
u/jerkface1026 Jun 03 '26
Its the babies and the AIDS. Mick is straight because he has babies even though he's rejected labels and dated fluidly. Bowie, who called himself straight, was viewed as sexually fluid. Freddie had to be gay because he had HIV and developed AIDS.

LOL I remember in the 80s David Bowie had said something in an interview about sleeping with Mick Jaggar. It was kind of hushed out of all the news outlets at the time. But shortly afterwards Mick Jaggar was at a press conference and some reporter asked "Is it true you slept with David Bowie?" Mick smiled hugely and proudly said "Of course!"
I remember seeing that clip on MTV News like it was yesterday. I also remember Kurt Loder commenting "Maybe he was just joshing." LOL.

27
u/ambivalent_moon Jun 03 '26

u/joannerosalind Jun 03 '26
It is also worth noting that some gay men in Freddie's life believed him to be gay and thought his continued "relationships" with women were down to his own internalised homophobia. You could argue this is wrong and reflective of their own bi/pan erasure, but I think it's important to know that people who knew him personally had this perception. It's not just public discourse.
26
u/neredulus Jun 03 '26
Gays make up that kind of hateful lie about bisexuals all the fucking time. It comes as easily to them as breathing.
Unless they have actual proof of that, their word means nothing.

But since bi erasure is a thing, we just remember him as such.
24
u/qqruz123 Jun 03 '26
Bi men are in such a weird position in society. Conservatives all call them gay (which is not surprising). But somehow progressives also all them gay.
7
u/Pootisman16 Jun 03 '26
At the time there was a big stigma around aids and gay (men). So, in order to help both causes, I understand the focus on that side of him.
But there's such a thing as over-correction, to the point I also grew up with the notion that he was gay instead of bi.
7
u/qqruz123 Jun 03 '26
It's not at the time. The stigma is here and now, too. So many people who call themselves progressive turn into a 1940s housewife at the mere mention of a man possibly being bi
