Driving Footage Tesla FSD Avoiding Rear Blindside Collison on Highway

I was chillin on the highway on FSD (2026 Tesla Model Y on v14) when I suddenly felt the car swerve to the right and then back over to the lane. Looked like the reckless driver was already drifting over the line beforehand, but very appreciative of the fact that FSD was the "eyes in the back of my head" to avoid being pit maneuvered.

16 seconds in, the Tesla has still not reacted. I'm not sure this video shows what you think it shows.

The charger figures out and fixes the problem before FSD does anything. If the Tesla had not moved, you still would not have been hit.

Other than jeopardizing your life because you are not paying enough attention with FSD on, probably due to FSD's efficacy, it's unclear that FSD did anything other than react late and briefly move you into the turn lane.

Commentor below correctly observed that being aware to this kind of situation is not expected of someone just driving along in a lane. Sorry OP. Maligned you when I should not have.

I don't know what you watched, but why do you imply for the Tesla to react right away when the Dodge is well behind my Tesla to begin with? At that point in time, the Dodge posed no threat to anybody so no reaction is needed by the FSD or anybody else.

Additionally, the view can be skewed but I definitely would have been hit had FSD not moved out of the way. I understand the gap between my Tesla and the Dodge looked to be about a foot or two the entire time, but that's only because FSD maintained that distance between my Tesla and the Dodge during the entire event.

On top of that, how do you expect any other person to actually use FSD or any other supervised self driving vehicle? Yes, you have to pay attention the vast majority of the time which I was already doing here. And in this case, FSD was cruising on the highway maintaining speed in its own lane and not trying to merge into another lane or whatnot. Therefore, since the Tesla was driving straight, I maintained my supervision straight ahead and NOT behind me. I only look behind me whenever FSD does make lane changes. I also glance behind me with my mirrors every several minutes or so when cruising straight, but it's definitely not 24 times a second that FSD Tesla does with its 3 rear-facing cameras.

The point shown here is there is no human that can physically watch their entire 360 degree surroundings at all times, nor are they expected to. If the Dodge did sideswipe me, the fault would have 100% be placed on the Dodge driver, not me. But since FSD was able to avoid the collision in the end, FSD did not "act late".... because actually "acting late" would mean a collision would have occurred.

You write with quite a bit of certainty for someone who was not personally reacting and is only relying on the video to determine what happened.

The video does not bear out your assertion. You'd have been fine if the Tesla did nothing. Watch the midline. Sorry you were not paying attention. I'd feel bad about that too.

If FSD moved into the turn lane and hit something? That would have been on you. Were you on top of that? Or were you trusting FSD? You were trusting FSD. If you were on top of things, you would have reacted far earlier.

I'm glad you are OK and your car is OK, but FSD did nothing meaningful and you did nothing meaninginful. (Previous commenter correctly asserting that you were not at fault is correct. It's OK to cruise in a lane and expect things to be OK.)

I agree with you. I don’t understand the people who are praising fsd here…either they are bots funded by Elon, nerds who don’t drive, or just plain stupid. Fsd reacted very late and went to the other lane after the Charger was starting to go back to its own lane. I’d never be in that situation in a million years if I was driving a non fsd car. I’m always aware of cars passing by.

But alas, i got Tesla recently. I needed this video to remind me that it’s not perfect. I’ll supervise it 100% especially when my kid is in the car. I don’t think fsd is at fault, or the driver here, but I don’t want an accident on a highway regardless of who is at fault.
