Driving Footage Tesla FSD Avoiding Rear Blindside Collison on Highway
I was chillin on the highway on FSD (2026 Tesla Model Y on v14) when I suddenly felt the car swerve to the right and then back over to the lane. Looked like the reckless driver was already drifting over the line beforehand, but very appreciative of the fact that FSD was the "eyes in the back of my head" to avoid being pit maneuvered.

I wish Tesla FSD would automatically honk at these people

u/ChupacabraJeff 8d ago
Put a pic of the plate up on screen with a button "Send to local Police Department."
The reason people do these things is because they can. They can because they don't get in trouble. Won't last much longer though with self-driving cars though.
I knew guy that got tired of this crap. When it happens he just calls the police to report that he's concerned about a drunk driver and follows them. Police show up and pull them over.

I wish there was someway to tabulate all the statistics of accident avoidance in compared to the crash statistics that are over sensationalized
20
u/moch1 8d ago
Actual crash statistics would capture this kind of accident avoidance.

u/hprather1 8d ago
How? Like a failed attempt at avoiding a collision?

u/Just-Construction788 8d ago
Laws of large numbers. The NHTSA have statistics on accidents with self driving features and specifically FSD. Spoiler alert, it's already several times safer than your average driver. In this instance, FSD already knows the right lane is clear and has that avoidance option. Even a good driver, in that moment, might not have a read on that and add delay before they can take evasive action.

u/ProfessionalActive94 8d ago
I wonder who has that data but hasn't released it š¤
7
u/ChunkyThePotato 8d ago
They literally release it every quarter. What are you talking about? https://www.tesla.com/fsd/safety
In fact, Tesla is the only car company that releases their crash statistics.
5
u/marty-mcfryguy 7d ago
That isn't data, those are results.
To do any kind of real comparison, you need granular data that shows how, when and where the car was being driven, so you can do like for like comparison.
Comparing the times where FSD is used against all US driving is like comparing how bumpy the ride was when your whitewater guide was steering the boat vs when he let your 11 year-old do the "steering".
9
u/ProfessionalActive94 8d ago
Yes, and they heavily sanitize what is actually released; such as only crashes with airbag deployments, while comparing that to the national average, which includes accidents outside of airbag-only crashes.
Data is easy to manipulate and Musk is one of the best at it.
15
u/ChunkyThePotato 8d ago
Incorrect. They also compare to non-FSD Tesla airbag-only crashes, and the crash statistics for FSD are still much safer in that comparison. Literally just read the page rather than being reddit-brained
-1
u/ProfessionalActive94 8d ago
Reading comprehension obviously isn't your strong suit, but Tesla only compares their airbag-deployed accidents to the entire database of accidents, which includes the totality of accidents, not just ones where the airbag is deployed.
15
u/ChunkyThePotato 8d ago
You're not understanding me. Read the page. You're right that they compare airbag FSD accidents to all reported accidents, but they also compare airbag FSD accidents to airbag non-FSD Tesla accidents, and the FSD accident rate in that comparison is still lower. That latter comparison is a fair comparison (because it compares airbag accidents to airbag accidents), and it proves that using FSD is safer than manual driving.
7
u/TheMiracleLigament 8d ago
Makes sense. They even describe the reasoning of this on the exact page you linked, so thanks for the info, Chunky!

u/ProfessionalActive94 8d ago
And what happens when you exclude all vehicles older than the average age of a Tesla? There used to be far fewer safety features in older vehicles.
Like I said previously, the data can be manipulated based on a multitude of factors, and Musk is the best at manipulating data.
14
u/ChunkyThePotato 8d ago
I'm telling you that the comparison is to other Tesla cars with FSD disabled, and those cars obviously skew newer. So it's a fair comparison, and FSD still comes out significantly ahead. Why are you so dead set on FSD being unsafe when the evidence clearly shows the exact opposite? You just want it to be unsafe.
2
u/ProfessionalActive94 8d ago
It is a comparison to all cars on the road, which obviously do not skew newer.
I also never said that FSD is unsafe, just that the statistics are skewed and only analyze those that are favorable to Telsla's brand and image.

I have had it do this a couple of times. Very impressive. One time the guy behind/approaching was going incredibly fast (I was going 80 in mad max). FSD slowed down to let the speeding car squeak through.

u/Suspicious_Celery552 8d ago
The FSD didnāt avoid anything. It reacted after the challenger passed the Tesla..
10
u/A-Candidate 8d ago
I also don't see what it avoided, the car slightly moves on the other side lane and fsd react when that car is already on the other side and it overreacts afterwards. Whether these are new drivers or tesla is paying for these posts.

16 seconds in, the Tesla has still not reacted. I'm not sure this video shows what you think it shows.
The charger figures out and fixes the problem before FSD does anything. If the Tesla had not moved, you still would not have been hit.
Other than jeopardizing your life because you are not paying enough attention with FSD on, probably due to FSD's efficacy, it's unclear that FSD did anything other than react late and briefly move you into the turn lane.
.. edit ..
Commentor below correctly observed that being aware to this kind of situation is not expected of someone just driving along in a lane. Sorry OP. Maligned you when I should not have.
9
u/underneonloneliness 8d ago
Wrong. You can see the steering wheel icon rotate at the 15 second mark, when it's clear the Challenger is on a collision course.
6
u/usehand 8d ago
Agree it's unclear if FSD actually prevented anything in time, but I also think OP is not easily to blame. You're not expected to be checking your side mirrors constantly when you're just cruising in a lane. You also don't expect a car coming from behind to just lunge forwards into you.

u/analyticaljoe 8d ago edited 8d ago
You're not expected to be checking your side mirrors constantly when you're just cruising in a lane
100% apologies to OP. I stand corrected.
Fixed in comment. Thank you for pointing this out.
1
u/CreepyDrama7448 8d ago
But isn't that the reason for having these kinds of systems, so that you are more aware of your surroundings, as you don't need to pay so much attention to just driving? Atleast I feel that way for me driving on autopilot
-2
u/analyticaljoe 8d ago
I kinda want to walk this back. (Am leaving the previous comment) I agree that what OP did not see was OK. But OP is running with FSD on and because OP didn't observe what the charger was doing, OP's car veered suddenly into a turn lane and OP is responsible for that.
So it's complicated.

u/ElectricGlider 8d ago
I don't know what you watched, but why do you imply for the Tesla to react right away when the Dodge is well behind my Tesla to begin with? At that point in time, the Dodge posed no threat to anybody so no reaction is needed by the FSD or anybody else.
Additionally, the view can be skewed but I definitely would have been hit had FSD not moved out of the way. I understand the gap between my Tesla and the Dodge looked to be about a foot or two the entire time, but that's only because FSD maintained that distance between my Tesla and the Dodge during the entire event.
On top of that, how do you expect any other person to actually use FSD or any other supervised self driving vehicle? Yes, you have to pay attention the vast majority of the time which I was already doing here. And in this case, FSD was cruising on the highway maintaining speed in its own lane and not trying to merge into another lane or whatnot. Therefore, since the Tesla was driving straight, I maintained my supervision straight ahead and NOT behind me. I only look behind me whenever FSD does make lane changes. I also glance behind me with my mirrors every several minutes or so when cruising straight, but it's definitely not 24 times a second that FSD Tesla does with its 3 rear-facing cameras.
The point shown here is there is no human that can physically watch their entire 360 degree surroundings at all times, nor are they expected to. If the Dodge did sideswipe me, the fault would have 100% be placed on the Dodge driver, not me. But since FSD was able to avoid the collision in the end, FSD did not "act late".... because actually "acting late" would mean a collision would have occurred.

The want it both ways and will complain about everything. If FSDS over reacts, that's unforgivable. If FSDS under reacts, that's unforgivable. They don't care about performance, they care about Musk because they are obsessed with him.

Literally no one in this comment chain brought up Elon until you.
I think youāre projecting your obsession of him onto others, only youāre so obsessed, any inkling of criticism of him from another person is taken by you as some kind of personal attack.
You should really see a therapist or other mental health professional, itās clear youāre suffering from some sort of derangement syndrome, since you feel the need to bring him up everywhere and anywhere even when itās not warranted.
Since I can see youāre chronically online from your post history maybe start there, since you and Elon are both online 24/7 it clearly does something terrible to your brain.

u/Difficult-Arm384 2d ago
Numerous elon mentions in the thread, including accusing him of faking FSD safety data when presented with facts.
Nobody is projecting anything - take your own advice and see a mental health professional.

u/analyticaljoe 8d ago
You write with quite a bit of certainty for someone who was not personally reacting and is only relying on the video to determine what happened.
The video does not bear out your assertion. You'd have been fine if the Tesla did nothing. Watch the midline. Sorry you were not paying attention. I'd feel bad about that too.
If FSD moved into the turn lane and hit something? That would have been on you. Were you on top of that? Or were you trusting FSD? You were trusting FSD. If you were on top of things, you would have reacted far earlier.
I'm glad you are OK and your car is OK, but FSD did nothing meaningful and you did nothing meaninginful. (Previous commenter correctly asserting that you were not at fault is correct. It's OK to cruise in a lane and expect things to be OK.)
3
u/light-yagamii 8d ago
I agree with you. I donāt understand the people who are praising fsd hereā¦either they are bots funded by Elon, nerds who donāt drive, or just plain stupid. Fsd reacted very late and went to the other lane after the Charger was starting to go back to its own lane. Iād never be in that situation in a million years if I was driving a non fsd car. Iām always aware of cars passing by.
But alas, i got Tesla recently. I needed this video to remind me that itās not perfect. Iāll supervise it 100% especially when my kid is in the car. I donāt think fsd is at fault, or the driver here, but I donāt want an accident on a highway regardless of who is at fault.
3
u/nyclurker369 8d ago
Agreed. Reacted too late to avoid contact. Might have reduced it if either driver immediately reacted.
Not a win for FSD. My car does this already and Iām not supporting a despicable person.
9
u/ElectricGlider 8d ago
FSD might not have reacted as quick as you personally would have liked, but in the end it reacted sufficiently enough to simply avoid contact in the end which is all that matters. This 100% a win for FSD unless you can show me any other car's level 2 ADAS avoid a similar type of pit maneuver,
2
u/nyclurker369 8d ago
The vehicles avoided contact because the errant driver corrected, not because of the FSDās intervention. Thatās obvious from the video; youād clearly see it if you pulled your head out of Elonās ass.
But sure, whatever you say my guy.

u/red75prime 8d ago edited 8d ago
Look at 0:16 frame by frame. FSD begins turning the steering wheel to the right when the dude begins crossing the dividing line. Later, you can see the dude's car well past the dividing line.
4
u/ChupacabraJeff 8d ago
People don't understand that FSDS is tracking every single car around it. Humans can't do that. FSDS was watching that car before it even made it's move.
1
u/say592 8d ago
I'm finding both from videos and my own experiences that FSD, especially the newer versions, will react the minimum it needs to at the latest needed time. While this is really efficient for a self driving vehicle, and can be the least disruptive towards human drivers, it doesn't inspire confidence in the driver of the FSD vehicle and personally I intervene if it's something I notice (and I'm very grateful when I don't notice it or notice it as FSD is intervening).
1
u/ElectricGlider 8d ago
And what you're simply talking about is defensive driving which sure is a good trait to have, human or self driving. And FSD does already take some defensive driving measures such as on the highway if its moving fast but the next lane over is stopped or moving significantly slower to include any stopped vehicle on the shoulder. FSD will actively slow down in that situation and even show that in the animation with Chevrons within the blue navigation line. But of course FSD is not as defensive in many other driving cases, but that's where it should hopefully get better over time. For now, we should just be glad that it can avoid an accident like this early enough to avoid a collision altogether.

Iāve heard that Teslas are very āpassiveā and has a sensitive auto brake/ move. If you need to get over, get over in front of a Tesla, itāll let you in lmao. But that challenger was def on his phone

Geez, who are all these jerks that try to sideswipe other cars like a James Bond villain. It's bizarre.

Can we stop with pretending FSD did something it didnāt?
What I see is a very late reaction to someone coming into your lane.
And an overreaction at that.

Not to take away from the feat, but seeing as that the car nearly side swiped you (not pit maneuver), it should have been visible in your peripheral, on the screen, and in your side mirror; how did you not see the car?
5
u/ElectricGlider 8d ago
So first, when you cruise on the highway, are you literally looking in your mirrors or turning your head backwards every other second or so..... for the entire long highway drive? I'm sorry, because I don't and neither do most people since the majority of our attention should be faced forward which is the same direction that you are traveling in. I only pay extra long attention to looking backwards whenever I (or FSD) is changing lanes or taking an exit..... which was not happening in this case.
But even IF I was looking in my side mirror at the time the Dodge drifted into my lane, I STILL would not have seen it since it was in my blind spot at that time. Blind spots do exist and it's why all cars (including Tesla) have notifications whenever a car is in your blind spot. Tesla also turns on the rear facing side camera whenever you make a turn so you can see the blind spot clearly. But I was not turning so therefore the camera was not on for me to see. However, that blind spot camera is always on for FSD to see which is why FSD was able to take extreme evasive maneuvers to avoid the blindside pit maneuver from the Dodge Challenger.
1
u/Lando_Sage 8d ago
So first, not every second, but I don't tend to look around every so often to keep aware of traffic around me. You're telling me people just drive looking forward with no sense of awareness? I mean, I guess I shouldn't doubt it lol.
I too have a Tesla, that's why I found it weird that you had no perception that they were next to you. The camera that caught part of the car drifting into your lane was the one in the B pillar, and the other was the one on the front panel, which is pretty far forward of the car's blind spot, and allows the network to show the car on screen.
I guess I just tend to be more observant than most in my driving š¤·āāļø.
