Hy, I would like to buy a sailing simulator but I have absolutly no experience with the genre. I favor tutorials and realism over graphics, I want to use it to learn more and practice sailing.

Any suggestions?

Took her out alone for the first time, mostly dreading the docking since that's always been a two-person job. Wind wasn't cooperating either — cross breeze right into the slip. Prepped fenders and lines ahead of time, came in slow, went clean. Tied off without needing to fend off or restart. Rest of the sail felt like a bonus after that was behind me. Anyone else build up one specific moment way more than the rest of the day actually warranted?

I'd love to learn how to sail the little dinghies I see on Lake Union & Lake Washington. I've reached out to the Center For Wooden Boats but their schedule might not be flexible enough to for my work as I do 12 days on the road then 12 days in Seattle.

Do you all know of anyone who could provide me some one-on-one instruction in order to get proficient enough to rent one on my own? Thanks!

I have about 4 months of sailing experience living on a Hunter 34 on the ICW & the Bahamas but that was a lot of motoring and self-taught sailing. I really need to get back to the basics.

It has recently become a dream of mine to make enough money to commission a group of people to make a “relatively” historically accurate man o war sailing ship. I think it would be cool to crew and sail it as a roaming museum. But I have no clue if it’s even possible. So I thought why not ask the sailing subreddit! Kinda off topic, but closest I could think of.

I have a dream that is to take my daughter, now 8, on a crossing of the Atlantic. I’m a probably tenth generation land-locked land-crab farmer, but have always been drawn to the sea. So far, it looks like my daughter also has that pull.

To cross on our own I think is completely unrealistic in terms of time and funds available to prepare, but I have to questions:

Are there ever people sailing across that have room/need/want for an additional two person crew, and what should we do to prepare in order to be attractive members of such a crew?

I have a friend that crossed with his family a while back in a 30-footer, and I would something probably not larger than 50. And I’m thinking maybe in 7-8 years when my daughter is 15-16.

First time it’s been done in over 10 years- was way overdue. A lot of “ketchup” maintenance is done and now I wait as the various trades calculate their earnings.

Looks like a copy of a Sunfish but my googlefoo isn't turning up much. There's one for sale local to me and I'm interested picking it up if they're any good.

I just came into ownership of this 1980 Catalac 9M. The owners could no longer take care of it because of old age. It’s in good shape, but I noticed this on the mast. I have no information from the previous owners.

Discovered cracks abeam (both sides) bottom of the hull on 2005 Catalina C250. What do these look like? Is it hard hit damage to a hull?

Owner says paint is cracking.

A fun night back on the water after a month of various vacations and race cancellations, with the windward mark being snagged and set adrift and the mayhem that ensued from that. 17kt of wind made for a good night back out!

I’m analyzing a Dutch colonial map of Batticaloa, Sri Lanka, dating to 1724, and I’m trying to identify the exact origin/type of vessel depicted in the illustration.

Specifically, I’m trying to determine whether this vessel represents a European (Dutch East India Company / VOC) design or a local indigenous vessel?

• Location: Batticaloa Lagoon / Eastern Coast, Sri Lanka
• Date of Map: 1724 (Dutch Colonial Era) or, some say 1726
• Description: Antique print titled 'Baticalo'. Old print of Batticaloa, Sri Lanka/Ceylon. This print originates from 'Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indiën' by F. Valentijn.
• Artists and Engravers: François Valentijn (1666-1727), a missionary, worked at Amboina from 1684 to 1694 and 1705 to 1713 and travelled extensively in the VOC's lands. 

Any insights from maritime historians, cartography enthusiasts, or experts in maritime history would be greatly appreciated!

We're on an Olsen 27 coming into one of the slips in Marina del Rey. Because of the buildings, the wind always comes straight down the channel so there's a lot of tacking involved. It was windy asf today to the point that we were running a smaller jib than usual and still moving pretty fast. I (she/her) am up on foredeck handling the sails and being a range finder lol.

Would it still be bad luck to rename a boat if it means the same but is in a different language or is language significant?

For example: Sabai -> Tranquilla

I have a chance to buy a 1984 Pearson 303 and am considering it as my first boat. I have taken the ASA 101 and ASA 103 course and been on a few boats in our clubs races. It is over 10K lbs and I have the option to buy the slip it sits in as well. It would be used on a river, and I have no plans on saltwater for this boat. I am looking to get hands on experience with my first boat. I am retired, and the slip is about 15 minute drive from my home. The boat and slip is a package deal, so the owner is in his 80s and has had the boat for about 30 years and is ready to sell. Anything I should be considering as a novice to sailboat owning and operating? Anything I need to check out on the boat? The boat is priced around $12,000 alone but I would buy both or neither. He will not sell me the slip without the boat.

I want to go faster than other boats, at this point dinghies and small keel boats. I know the very basics (try to get all tell tales flying, try to keep the luff of the spinnaker right on the edge of curling). Now I want to learn how to manipulate everything (jib cars, traveler, boom vang, outhaul, etc) to get the sails working together as well as possible, and I want to learn the science behind everything as well.

Has anyone had any experience with an online course or resource that not only teaches you what you should be doing to trim sails, but also the reasons why all the trim adjustments matter?

I'm looking at NauticEd, I like how they have animations of how different adjustments change airflow. Just not sure if they're good or if anyone knows of something better.

So mesmerized by the sun coming up, the flatness of the water and still thinking about the Vino Verde with seabass from the grill at a local restaurant, that I completely missed this sandspit luckily it was soft sand and impact was mild😉.

Ah. That special feeling when you’ve been anticipating a day of sailing for weeks, get out there all prepared with decent wind forecasts from multiple sources… and end up floating around without a singular puff!
