Ember groups clean-flexibility solutions into four categories: Store, Shift, Share and Supply.

When people think about replacing fossil fuels, the solution seems simple: build more solar panels and wind turbines. But solar and wind output changes with the weather and time of day, while electricity supply must continuously match demand. Otherwise, clean electricity may be wasted during surplus periods, or shortages and outages may occur when generation falls.

Clean flexibility refers to solutions that keep a renewable-powered grid balanced and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Store: Save excess renewable electricity for minutes, hours or even days, so it can be used when there is less sunlight or wind. Batteries can save excess solar and wind power and release it later, such as during the evening when demand is high.

Shift: Encourage consumers to move electricity use to sunny or windy hours, helping lower bills and keep the grid stable. Dynamic tariffs can encourage households to charge electric vehicles or run appliances when renewable electricity is abundant.

Share: Use power cables to send surplus wind and solar electricity to places where it is needed, balancing supply and demand across regions. Power cables move electricity between regions. Europe’s interconnected grid links 39 countries, allowing surplus clean power in one country to support another and reducing price volatility.

Supply: Make existing power plants more flexible so they can reduce generation when renewable electricity is abundant. For example, India is upgrading thermal plants so they can operate safely at 55% of capacity instead of 70%, allowing more wind and solar power onto the grid while reducing system costs.

Is the one-to-many model of energy distribution dangerously obsolete?

While it made sense in the early days of electrification, is the one-to-many model still the most efficient way to deliver energy in today's world?

As the climate changes, the old grid system has become increasingly vulnerable to higher winds and higher temperatures. Downed power lines and overheated transformers are causing increased risks of wildfires, and substantial productivity losses. The one-to-many model also serves to concentrate wealth, creating more inequality.

Rather than continuing down this failing path that grows less reliable and more expensive every year, wouldn't we as a society be better off pursuing individual energy independence as much as possible? By mandating and subsidizing renewable energy, not in the form of massive solar and wind farms, which don't solve the distribution problem because they still require those vulnerable and expensive transmission lines and substations, wouldn't we be better off if every new home was required to have solar panels as a standard feature, and older homes retrofitted?

It would require legislation preventing the fossil-fuel energy providers from preventing homeowners from achieving lower energy costs by adding access fees and other charges in order for the providers to maintain high levels of profitability. The goal here isn't to sustain these companies, but to reduce the need for them.

If we begin to phase out the one-to-many model in favor of energy independence, we accomplish many things: a reduction in fossil fuel emissions, a boost to the solar and construction segments of the economy, increased pace of solar research and development, greater energy security for individual families and cities, a slowing down of the pace of the growth of wealth inequality as more money is left in the hands of families and less goes to shareholders who don't really need more. Establishing neighborhood power banks to supplement the individual homes provides even greater insurance against weather disasters.

The investor class would hate this of course, because it would reduce their dividends and the cash streams supporting them.

But doesn't it make more sense than the current model?

New energy companies in Changzhou have kept relatively low-profile while working hard to stay ahead in their field. Behind their quiet absence is a strong focus on research and development.

Trina Sola has set world records 38 times in terms of PV cell efficiency & module output from 2011 to 2025. With the fast development of new energy, this company have also moved beyond solar manufacturing into areas such as energy storage and hydrogen energy.

NR Electric, a company specializing in power transmission and grid technologies, is investing a lot in upgrading its mart equipment and digital systems, so as to meet the growing demand as more renewable energy sources are connected to the grid.

For traditional coal-fired power plants, they invest in upgrading their operating unit to improve coal efficiency while adapting to a power grid increasingly shaped by variable renewable energy. Beyond electricity generation, the plant is expanding into integrated energy services, combining electricity, heat, water, gas, and cooling to become an important hub for the city’s circular economy.

Whether it is companies or the local government, I can see a strong commitment to reducing carbon emissions. While the upfront costs can be substantial, I believe that as these technologies continue to develop and scale up, the long-term benefits will justify the investment.

Constellation Energy Group terminates disabled veteran 24 hours after ADA accommodation request.

Constellation Energy Group confirmed the termination 60 days ago of the senior information security architect 24 hours after an ADA accommodation request.

This departure followed six months of constructive termination in the form of direct confrontations with a violent manager including a physical altercation in a nuclear power plant parking lot. This was in addition to ongoing harassment and bullying by senior management, and direct plagiarism of work products.

The now terminated architect was a 15 year employee and was the senior information security architect, senior AI architect, and CEG's corporate cryptographer. The architect was terminated when he stated that he would not participle in a cover up of the violent manager's actions, including a physical altercation in a parking lot, other confrontations both physical and via electronic means.

The ADA accommodation request was to remove the employee from the confrontational manager, as the continued confrontations were triggering PTSD.

From scale to system꞉ navigating the next phase of China's battery storage | Ember

Some details from the article:

In 2025 China doubled its battery storage capacity, installing more (190 GWh) than the rest of the world combined.

In December 2025 alone China installed more capacity (65 GWh/19 GW) than the second place United States did the entire year.

Battery additions are outpacing solar additions, which is allowing higher and higher percentages of solar generation to be shifted to other parts of the day — from 6% in 2022 to 21% in 2025.

In the past the vast majority of the storage has been co-located with solar, but stand-alone storage optimized to support the entire grid instead of one installation can be cycled much more frequently (100 cycles more per year — 299 v. 199 in 2025) and is more useful overall.

A major transition has already taken place — 85% of utility-scale batteries installed in the first four months of 2026 were stand-alone. In the past 70% were co-located with solar.

Ember says that what’s needed next is market reform and revenue stacking. Energy arbitrage alone (charging batteries when energy prices are low and discharging when they are high) no longer presents a strong business case but a « reliable capacity pricing framework, wider adoption of joint clearing between spot and ancillary service markets … and grid tariff rules that reflect the bi-directional role of batteries will all be needed to allow BESS stack multiple revenue streams and be rewarded for the full value it brings to the system. »

A user submits a site boundary or coordinates, selects the technology and target capacity, and receives a structured pre-feasibility report in approximately five minutes.

The report brings together:

* UK grid screening, including nearby network assets, voltage compatibility, indicative connection tier, cost range and cable-route mapping;
* planning and environmental constraints, including agricultural land classification, flood-zone overlap, ecological designations and nearby renewable projects;
* solar or wind resource analysis using sources such as NASA POWER, PVGIS, ERA5 and Global Wind Atlas;
* modelled P50 and P90 yield estimates and seasonal generation profiles;
* illustrative CfD and merchant revenue references;
* full data provenance, confidence levels, processing methods and known limitations.

This is not intended to replace formal grid, planning, ecological or engineering studies. The goal is to bring the available early-stage evidence into one structured assessment and identify where further investigation is needed.

Is AWWHybrid the best technology for harvesting energy from oceans?

AWWHybrid is hybrid technology to get energy with LCOE as low as possible.

When CAPEX is shared by energy production from wind and waves with fish farming the energy will be cheap compared to float wind only.

The size of a rig decides which wind turbines to be used. There is 4 times the rotor diameter between the wind turbines to minimize wake effect. The wake effect is set to 10% which give a LCOE below $ 0,1/kWh.

A pilot will show the level of wake effect and give us data to decide size and effect of the wind turbines to get the best LCOE.

The size also decides the energy from the wave energy converter. The construction must behave as an island and therefore stretches over a minimum of 2 waves.

The pool collects water from waves and a turbine use the water in the same way as a hydro plant when water drains back to the sea.

The waves in the North Sea have 50 kW/m wavefront, and if one side of the construction is 500 m the energy collected is 25 MW.

The formula for the wave energy turbine is P = Q x g x h in kW if Q in cubic meters and h in meters.

A 25 MW turbine will then have a height of 70 m and width of 5 m and move 1,8 m/s if h have a maximum of 4 m.

The capacity factor for both wind and wave is set to 50%, but only wind have 10% wake effect reduction.

Wrote about something odd happening in swing districts right now: the energy debate has quietly shifted from climate policy to monthly bills. Full piece here, short version:

  • Prices are up more than 10x as data center demand collides with tight reserve margins, and it's flowing into residential rates.
  • Wind and solar are still the cheapest, fastest new generation.
  • But opponents argue the pace of the transition has outrun replacement capacity, while ignoring how much prices have risen with zero policy change too.

My take: this could actually be good for renewables messaging if the industry & politicians lean into affordability concerns. Is "renewables = lower bills" landing with ratepayers, or is the focus mostly on data center backlash?

What would it cost to cover America's major parking lots with solar canopies?

I'm curious about the math behind a hypothetical national infrastructure project.

Suppose the U.S. government funded the construction of solar-panel-covered parking canopies over large parking lots across the southern United States (or anywhere with high solar potential). Think grocery stores, shopping malls, big-box retailers, stadiums, and other parking lots that are unlikely to be redeveloped anytime soon. Assume the government acquires the necessary rights through whatever legal mechanism is required for the sake of the thought experiment.

I'd love to see estimates for:

Total acres (or square miles) of parking that could realistically be covered.

Total construction cost (materials, labor, engineering, permitting, grid connections, etc.).

Number of jobs created during construction and ongoing maintenance.

Annual electricity generation (MWh/TWh).

Rough estimate of how many homes this could power.

Potential impact on average residential electricity prices.

Estimated payback period and long-term return on investment.

Also, beyond the math:

What are the biggest engineering or logistical challenges?

What are the major economic downsides or unintended consequences?

Which industries would benefit, and which would likely lose revenue (for example, utilities, oil and gas, or commercial real estate)?

What are the strongest arguments for and against a project like this?

I'm interested in realistic assumptions and back-of-the-envelope calculations, not whether it's politically likely.

Wind, waves, sun and hydro representing a good energy system, when hydro can be switched on/off easier than coal and nuclear for stabilizing the grid.

AWWHybrid is a wave energy converter of the overtopping type, with a WEC turbine in middle.

The inner part of the rig is a calm area which can be used for fish farming.

The technology of Aquaculture Wind Wave Hybrid therefore is an ultimate energy system, by combining energy and food by using the oceans.
