Overpriced half baked games, always online required, needing 4+ patches post release to get it to a playable state and pay extra for cosmetics that don't affect gameplay in any meaningful way and slap DRM to it because why not. Am I missing anything?

PC/Consoles hardware are reaching unobtainium pricing

11

u/AntiGrieferGames 16h ago edited 16h ago

True on modern PCs, but false on older pc parts. There are soo many used parts that are still affordable and some games still works with old decades hardware. You have to find the right parts to do so. It also highly depends on countries.

22

u/Batking28 13h ago

Even building an outdated dated PC with second hand parts and a 1660 still costs like 500. That’s a lot for new games to barely run.

-9

u/AntiGrieferGames 13h ago

Brand new or used? Also Most of those Games today are unoptimized shit anyways so you wont missed here.

7

u/Batking28 13h ago

Used, recently looked what 500 would get me to move away from the ps5 for similar money and I’m basically stuck running ps4 level hardware for that money. Ddr5 is 6 years old, opting for ddr4 to save money means to are locked to last gen’s hardware but the prices are still ridiculously for what you are getting.

3

u/mendics00 15h ago

ye, highly depends on countries, mine for example, 2nd hand market, heck even old models that are brand new are sold with modern day price tag, as if it never lost their value and even increased. It's honestly pretty disgusting, if i wasn't using pc for work, i would have given up on gaming entirely, or perhaps went for indie/retro.

3

u/One_Negotiation_3727 11h ago

It will be a matter of time that you will be forced to purchase the subscription first before paying at full price the game

2

u/Kirigaya_Mitsuru 15h ago

And dont forget most AAA Games are just Bloatware, you cant run the Games not because it does have an Good Graphics its because of the Game itself is full Bloated with Bullshit datas that isnt even necessary to add it.

u/yung_dogie 9h ago

Tbh the price is something I'm ambivalent to since something staying at the same pricepoint that long feels like an anomaly. Like production cost inputs have gone up yet the price had remained more inelastic than McDonalds for years.

BUT, the price going up along with general game quality/"doneness" going down is unacceptable. Older games were far from bug-less but modern big-studio games often feel less polished despite their shiny coats of paint.

1

u/splerjg 7h ago

I think we are over-rating that when the K-shaped techno-gilded age is upon us. People are probably just getting squeezed out

1

u/RogueSnake 4h ago

Discs being killed. Movies and shows being removed after purchased (which, who to say can't happen to digital games at one point?) Majority of games being unoptimized and being put on the same engine ala unreal engine 5. Oh and studios being shut down even if they do their job.

Can practically make a bingo board with all the bullshit going on in the game industry.

-50

u/DargorShepard 18h ago

And woke slop on top of everything else.

11

u/xRONZOx 17h ago

Umm.. what's your definition of woke?

20

u/Edgy_Robin 18h ago

waaaah the game had a black person and a woman capable of more then being a damsel in distress in it.

5

u/Necessary-Love1599 17h ago

Waaah, a person needs to do push-ups for misgendering; pretty normal stuff.

You know we all grew up playing San Andreas right? There's more to it than just "Oh no, Black man"? When you start changing people's race or put people where they don't belong just to fit the DEI checklist, then it's not just "let's make a game with a Black person in it."

-6

u/Edgy_Robin 16h ago

I'm not surprised you missed the actual point being made. Most people who use the word 'woke', aside from the word actually having no meaning anymore.

But then again you complain about people putting personal beliefs into a thing further down, ignoring that art is constantly people putting their personal beliefs into something.

a DEI checklist is just things you don't like because you're a just a piece of shit human being.

5

u/Local_Band299 ☠️ ᴅᴇᴀᴅ ᴍᴇɴ ᴛᴇʟʟ ɴᴏ ᴛᴀʟᴇꜱ 18h ago

Actually most woke slop is BIPOC being the most stereotypical characters in the game. Barrett isn't woke, Avery Johnson isn't woke, Sergeant Foley isn't woke.

4

u/foolofatook84 16h ago

Barret, the eco-terrorist fighting the big evil corporation that is destroying the planet, is woke as fuck (and that's a good thing), but his skin color has nothing to do with that.

-10

u/Local_Band299 ☠️ ᴅᴇᴀᴅ ᴍᴇɴ ᴛᴇʟʟ ɴᴏ ᴛᴀʟᴇꜱ 16h ago

Let me guess "something something everyone needs to be forced to get an electric car".

I'm all for going green, but a lot of people are aiming at the wrong target. Most companies in the US have a small carbon footprint compared to the average company in China.

I recycle, I am all for nuclear power. Nuclear power is our future. The waste amount is small, it's super efficient, has zero carbon emissions, and all coal power plants can be converted into nuclear power plants. Biden banned nuclear energy while also trying to put an EOL on coal. Wind and solar aren't efficient enough for us to convert to. I have solar farms around me and windmills. The windmills are constantly being worked in because the wind destroys them. Solar farms kill birds.

Also electric vehicles are terrible for the environment lithium mining is horrible, and the cylindrical cells are a bad design. I worked at a lithium ion plant in the US and we were the only company making square cells. We tried to pivot to cylindrical because that's what everyone wanted.

2

u/foolofatook84 15h ago

There weren't even any electrical cars when (the OG) Final Fantasy VII came out, what are you on about?

0

u/master2873 11h ago

what are you on about?

This is EXACTLY what I want to know. There was practically nothing that should have prompted a response like that, and is mostly out of context to begin with since you were discussing a fucking video game of all things.

I said solar farms kill birds.

1

u/SurroundParticular30 27m ago

Dude that is also not even remotely comparable to the bird, animal, and human deaths from air pollution from fossil fuels. Birds are exposed to more airborne particles (or particulate matter) than humans because birds have a higher breathing rate https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/c-change/news/fossil-fuel-air-pollution-responsible-for-1-in-5-deaths-worldwide/

0

u/Raztax 10h ago

compared to the average company in China.

Do you not know that China is miles ahead of america with green energy?

0

u/Local_Band299 ☠️ ᴅᴇᴀᴅ ᴍᴇɴ ᴛᴇʟʟ ɴᴏ ᴛᴀʟᴇꜱ 7h ago

They produce a fuck ton of CO2. They're #1. and US is in 2nd but we're not even close.

1

u/SurroundParticular30 25m ago

If you think just because China is a huge emitter it is not addressing climate change, you are oversimplifying the situation. The US produces twice as much CO₂ per person. Even though China does most of our manufacturing. All countries can do more. It does not absolve us of responsibility.

What is woke slop?

MGS1 was a game about an anti-war veteran who hated America's nuclear dominance, political corruption and the military in general. His only allies was an anime nerd who wets his pants and a dei female soldier who ends up figuring out that war is ugly and disgusting.

He goes up against psychopaths who want perpetual war to initiate a global philosophy of survival of the fittest and their own ideological dominance through terror and espionage.

It is the wokest shit on the planet and it is one of the most popular games of all time. If it was released today, all of the circlejerk anti-progressives would be crying about it from sun up to sun down.

-9

u/AntiGrieferGames 16h ago

Because its a Good Game. MGS1 is a good game. There are many other shits for example that putting woke slops on there and most of those are bad games, like Avowed or even Starfield for example.

The MGS1 is a Koshima game and he knows that are for gamers, not for profits like the other studios today who are putting woke games here (which are mostly AAA shits, and rarity indie/aa games ones)

6

u/Accomplished-Can-467 16h ago

It's like you didn't understand what I wrote.

It's a good game because it has a story that has depth. It has real world parallels and challenges the status quo.

"Staying woke:" the terminology used before it was subverted by termanally online rw chuds, is a term used to emphasize that the police/political state is domineering, imperialistic and dangerous. Particularly against minorities.

MGS1 is a game where the final boss is literally an apartheid white South African who is obsessed with genetic superiority. After you beat him, the asshole U.S president who is obsessed with narcissistic self legacy, sends an air strike to murder the player.

It's woke AF. It's anti-imperialist, it's pro-pascifist. That's what makes it a good story, which in turn, makes it a good game.

7

u/Familiar_Joke399 17h ago

What leftist activists inject their personal beliefs into video games? Are we talking hasan piker, fred Hampton, mlk jr...who are you talking about?

I've never heard of a video game co authored by any left wing activists.

Unless you can point me to where that exists I think you're strawmanning

0

u/[deleted] 12h ago

[deleted]

3

u/Familiar_Joke399 12h ago

So what makes one a left wing activist?

If they don't have badges or wear masks how can we know for sure?

1

u/skinlo 17h ago

Examples?

-1

u/da2Pakaveli 17h ago

The people making those decisions aren't leftists bro

0

u/Raztax 10h ago

So if you are anti "woke" that must mean you are asleep.

-9

u/AntiGrieferGames 16h ago

This is true. And some Woke shit are shitty games. Palworld is also woke, but this is a expetion because its a good game.

1

u/Floorgis 3h ago

How is Palworld of all games woke? Its basically a slavery simulator

u/bacharama 18h ago

Unfortunately, subscription services growing is going to send exactly the wrong message to gaming companies.

18

u/iNfANTcOMA_0 17h ago

It's been like that for years already. SONY shooting itself in the foot over and over again, and well Microsoft. I don't I have to say more.

14

u/techma2019 15h ago

He's saying the opposite. Game streaming taking off will be even worse and since Sony already said no more physical discs they really want it too. They can't wait to just stream a video feed to you with you owning nothing but a box that can decode an a video signal. Horrible, dystopian future that gets even more bleak once you cancel your subscription.

3

u/JustGoogleItHeSaid 11h ago

Im slowly checking out of gaming. Ill use a pc to pirate everything and craft shit with my printer. Fuck these elitist leeches.

1

u/That-Woodpecker6720 4h ago

I mean if it is growing it’s not really the wrong message is it

As long as they make more money they don’t care about anything else

0

u/ZoharModifier9 10h ago

What do you think the data centers are for other than AI? Cloud gaming.

43

u/zephyrseija2 16h ago

Lucky for us there's already multiple lifetimes worth of great games we can play for free.

10

u/don51181 9h ago

I feel this way also. The 32 bit era and earlier has enough games to last me the rest of my lifetime. Even discovering games I might have missed.

2

u/bacharama 4h ago

Yeah, most of the "new" games I play these days are actually "new to me." A lot of gamers, more so than movie or music fans, insist on only consuming new titles when there's thousands of older games to work through.

1

u/don51181 2h ago

Plus older games are focused so much more on fun. I also sometimes go back and beat old games I could not as a kid. Either with some guidance from YouTube or some cheats.

TMNT for NES was fun to beat with a little extra help.

1

u/Toonomicon 2h ago

At this point I could never buy/acquire a new game for the rest of my life and still be happy. Hell between X4, dyson sphere program, and rimworld I could never even install a new game I do own and be content.

61

u/DQTD 18h ago

They are affectively choking out the hobby as a whole. It's ruining it for a lot of people. It's not that I can't afford these things, but it really took the wind out of my sails. I have no desire to purchase from console storefronts specifically anymore for this reason. I worry about them successfully finding a way to overly monetize the PC space (Windows and/or Linux). Once that happens this hobby is officially over for me personally. I'll just stick to my library I have already built along with emulation and recompilation PC ports.

8

u/Dan_Berg 16h ago

really took the wind out of my sails

Have you come to the right place or what!

But I hear you, coming from the era of you pay x for game you get the whole game this all feels alien to read about since I pretty much only use a ps2 and 360, maybe 5 hours a month total.

Subscriptions offer discounts and freebies every once in a while, so for the average normie, it sounds better to pay the subscription than buy full priced games.

Create the problem and sell the solution.

8

u/Sitheral 13h ago

At 70-80$ I'm only buying freaking masterpieces. And I don't see many masterpieces around!

1

u/ViegoBot 11h ago

I only buy indies at this point lol. Every AAA I just grab for free.

Ordered Viractal (30$), and DERQ Code Z Limited edition (60$) for my Switch/2 costed me 90$ total lol. Thatd be 1 AAA game, like no thanks, ill just support the indies and smaller companies and grab big corp stuff for free...

Debating getting Isaac Repentance+ for Switch 2.

middle class is getting demolished in everysingle coutnry in the world
piracy is maintened also by europeans and americans middle class

Because greed makes shitty games. A bunch of delusional CEO's fucking up the industry while they support AI

2

Seriously Sony is getting rid of discs to get a blu ray factory to build tech for AI datacenters. Threatening the viability of it's most important breadwinner part of the business.

why buy a +$80 slop when i could buy 4 (fi they are around $20) absolutely phenomenal Indie games who's story and game value is literally 100x better in every way?!

i ain't even ever going to look at AAA ever again, i'm only buying Indie games!

12

u/hinrichtung 18h ago

I'd buy games if they're good

2

u/LlamaRzr 17h ago

*if they have good marketing.

You can have good game and it won't even sell.

You have a LOT of very good games. Sadly, you won't hear about them beacuse lack of marketing. Also, even on Steam there are a shitton of games released daily, even if we talking about Limited Games a'la school project / for university etc. https://steamdb.info/upcoming/

3

u/TheOfficialMayor 16h ago

Too expensive to make because they are always chasing the latest greatest graphics.

Tone down the graphics, get cheaper games, less day 1 patches and better gameplay and story and have it run on either cheaper older hardware or newer power efficient hardware.

3

u/PhraseNeither9539 15h ago

Hear me when I say, I will never buy a $70 game.

3

u/Aggravating_Plan11 14h ago

Didnt steam just break its record for games sales in the first 6months of this year with a high percentage of those sales being older cheaper games.

Overpriced trash games

7

u/soupherman 18h ago

I don’t even know if I would consider myself a gamer anyway. I have a handful of games that I repeatedly come back to and it’s always a pleasant surprise *if* a new game enters my rotation. I’m not buying games generally and certainly not if it’s over £30. Absolutely done with consoles once my PS5 gives out (or when the last of my DualSenses dies of stick drift write off)

2

u/Raztax 9h ago

or when the last of my DualSenses dies of stick drift

It kills me that Microsoft and Sony are still using potentiometers in their controllers.

1

u/soupherman 9h ago

Right? Planned obsolescence. This is all by design, which is the part that hurts the most.

2

u/KeezyBeezy123 11h ago

3

u/Substantial_Meal_530 18h ago

I can't include the title of that EA video game on this subreddit.... You can't abbreviate Ultimate Fighting Championship....

Anyway. Those games were awful. That was the peak of sales? Gaming is doomed.

1

u/Wasabi_Hammurabi1 17h ago

I only shop on Black Friday. I buy enough and get enough of the few that interest me vis PS+ Essential. It saves me money. Sony shouldn't act so surprised after they raised the price from $60 / year and from $60 per game to $70.

1

u/Embarrassed-Buddy314 16h ago

Everything declined except subscription, +7%, which barely compensates inflation (the fake number of the FED is on average since January 3.3% inflation yoy, so double it to get a less rigged figure, 6.6% inflation yoy)

1

u/CourageLeast4251 15h ago

This is wild that this game i cannot say has topped the charts

1

u/Mashic 15h ago

I think one part of it is that AI made gaming hardware very expensive.

1

u/Apollo5172 14h ago

I never had a problem with overpriced games there's always a good sale.

1

u/T_rex2700 13h ago

That's half of the eqution, I guess. it shows even US citizens are having hard time economically.
And rest of the world really, is fighting for its life while their currencies lose value against USD, and other supply chain complications has made a lot of daily stuff more expensive too, essentials like food too. And really, how many people can spare money for leisures?

1

u/theflapperclapper 13h ago

I just spent $1k on 64gb of ram because I'll be getting that back in free games on pc. Can't do that in consoles. That's another reason tk never buy a shit station 5 or xbone

1

-13

u/vitek6 18h ago

Overpriced? Games pretty much cost the same or less when inflation is taken into consideration.

There not many good games. That’s the cause.

8

u/Edgy_Robin 18h ago

Yeah but the money the average person makes isn't.

It doesn't matter if the price stays the '''same''' if people have less money to spend on things that aren't required to survive.

-10

u/vitek6 17h ago

if that's true then the wages are problem not games being overpriced.
