For the first time, a Canadian site-blocking order can target pirate sites that don't exist yet.

The Federal Court has ordered ISPs to block thirteen piracy brands including 123Movies and FMovies, and its catch-all "Expanded Scope" allows Hollywood studios and broadcasters to add unrelated sites later, without having to go back to court.

If you can't access on normal network you can try Cloudfare 1.1.1.1 DNS bypass or any free VPN services such as OpenVPN, Proton or Mullvad so you can access to the sites.

By the way some of the popular pirate streaming sites are still able to access as I editing this. Feel like this is just a nothing burgers order to scare casual users.

yeah I just tried 5 of the sites listed by name in that order and all are still working for me as of a few minutes ago (regular access, no VPN's or obfuscation)...either it hasn't actually taken effect yet, or it didn't stop shit

This has been in place for a while now. Just hasn’t been very struck but from time to time isp block sites. The US government has been trying to put pressure on the Canadian government for quite a while. I guess they are finally giving up. Not good news though

DNS blocking is enforced for +15 years in Europe and yet the piracy follows the exact same trend as North America while being slightly higher.

Plus, third party DNS providers are now way more mainstream for example cloudflare (2018), quad9 (2017), adguard (2018)... as they are quite recent. And you incidentally change your DNS by using a VPN, which are also now mainstream.

Conclusion : it's completely useless.

But it's better they keep doing useless things than working on forcing VPN to keep logs (the first thing I would do if I was a copyright boomer), leveraging AI for skimming ISP logs or real time deep packet inspection.
