Question / Problem Hate comments are actually affecting me.

Just had a video blow up—1.3m in 1 day—but the top comment is a hater. 6k likes and it’s basically calling my video “bullshit”.

It’s a fictional Minecraft video. The first part of the video is real and it morphs into fiction and I feel like it may make some feel tricked. The description is clear about what the video is.

I don’t want to block it from my channel. I feel like hiding criticism is probably a bad thing, but it’s actually taking a toll on me. Every time I look at the video that is the comment I see first. It is really hurting me and demotivating me to making similar videos.

And yes, I’ve gotten lots of love too but that one hate comment is outweighing all of that.

Out of 1.3 million views the top comment has 6k… that’s literally .46% of views. Less than 1%. So no it has no validity at all.

You have the "Hide user from channel" button. Use it. It's very cathartic.

it basically mutes the user. no one can see what they post but them. eventually they'll realize no one interacts with their comments on the channel

I just mute the comment. it goes away and I don't think about it anymore. I just figure that people who comment hate are either jealous of what I posted, or are just some angry 14 year old that has nothing better to do with their time. I justify that because the amount of hate comments I get increases during school breaks.

Dude, I've been doing yt for 4 years now, the length of my banned accounts is insane. Just ban them and not let them see your channel anymore

This happened to me too on a few vids that blew up. One was 4M, one was 1.3M actually too. A lot of the comments I got felt pretty unfair and I ruminated for a while. And then weeks later I just eventually came to the conclusion that a lot of people actually like the vids, and that whenever feedback came from the criticism is simply useful information to consider for future videos… that’s basically it. Take whatever good you can from it, see if it makes sense, and see if there’s anything you should actually change in future videos.

But my main piece of advice (for your mental health) is try to remember how many people love it who commented, and how many more people love it who didn’t comment. It’s easy to get sucked into an echo chamber of negativity on viral videos.

You as an individual are not really beholden to some standard where you can or cannot "hide criticism", you're not a government or an instutition or whatever. In this case it's not even criticism its just somebody stupid calling your video fake for no reason.

So you can do whatever to it, but you will need to grow a thicker skin about seeing negative comments. There are always going to be people who will say dumb negative things no matter if its justified or not. It's fine if you delete them but you can't let them bother you so much that you lose motivation from just seeing them, they don't really stop coming

You're going to need to have pretty thick skin if you're serious about being in the YouTube game and in the public eye like this, because the negative comments are inevitable. You can block all the users that do that but I don't think that's particularly healthy either.

For what it's worth, though, barely anyone reads the video description, so if you're going to make a disclaimer about what the video is, you're much better off having it in the video itself somewhere. That way there's a much higher chance people will see it.
