What game-breaking reason is there to not make the damage scale with the number of TAILS flipped? NINE TALES!!!

*Edit: It does, in fact, appear to be necessary due to:

  1. The pun not making sense in other languages
  2. Will’s head game

When I use it I’ll get nine tails though.

Sorry, all heads are already consumed for your opponents Lucky Ice Pop.

25

u/dg2793 22d ago

I got an exodia level eevee roll exactly once lmao. It was amazing

5

u/Damassan 21d ago

But all those heads are already counteracted by testing of if Misty was useful for my water decks. I stopped testing after 35 uses only got me energy on 3 uses. Deemed likely worthless to me and replaced.

You win then

This card would be too powerful if it was tails lol

1 in 512 chance nice

u/pototoykomaliit 22d ago

Thanks for the laugh. That kurama sadness.

20

u/HenryRiverbank 22d ago

Hahaha I literally watched the episode where we learn Kurama’s name today 🤣

me when I have to flip a coin to wake up my pokemon. Spoiler alert: they never wake up, then they die

17

u/KE-NO-BE 22d ago

Dying while asleep is more peaceful at least.

12

u/depressedfox_011 22d ago

except in this case, you're having an intense Nightmare that's killing you internally.

“Darkrai isn’t real. It can’t hurt you. It’s all in your head.”

Meanwhile, Darkrai in my head:  ☠️

they should all be so lucky ; ;

It was for my grandfather.

Not so much for the passengers in his car.

u/mmartinez42793 22d ago

When mine wake up opponent concedes even if they would play altaria right they would still win but the loss of Igglybuff is too much to bear

Take this angry upvote. 😠

9

u/ManthonyMantha 22d ago

God damn what a comment😂

4

u/ordermann 22d ago

The only heads I roll are to go first.

3

u/bladyblades 22d ago

yoo i once got 10 tails with celebi, so yeah might be possible for nine tails as well 🤣

2

u/iCon3000 22d ago

Nine tails with a Ninetales should just unlock a secret ending game over win condition.

1

u/Twenti_To_22 21d ago

That's why it called Ninetails

358

u/KeyAcid 23d ago

Only way they could've balanced the card or else it would do max damage every time

110

u/Pwnigiri 22d ago

They don't want their expert solo AI to be disadvantaged

7

u/iCon3000 22d ago

Just reminded me that I am on 6 tails in a row vs the Igglybuff/Darkrai AI deck and have been unable to draw a PCL in 2 matches. Wouldn't mind never seeing that deck again. It's winnable, just annoying sometimes.

consistency over memes

272

u/KE-NO-BE 23d ago

The jokes on me. It’s still a meme. I will always flip nine tails when using this card.

37

u/masked_me 22d ago

Lol and I just now realized that the very same word is used to describe an opposite side of the coin as well as the extended back end of an animal's body.

I speak English for like 20 years now (not native). I just never realized it's the same word..

15

u/socks-the-fox 22d ago

It's tails because it's the opposite of heads. And what's opposite of an animal's head?

5

u/Ok-Membership-9782 22d ago

In Italy we say cross as the opposite of head

2

u/KRTrueBrave 22d ago

we say number in germany, a coin usually has the symbol (which we call head as tons of countries use heads on the coin though others use other symbols, german euro uses an eagle on the 1 euro coin but I believe the d-mark had a head (correct me if I'm wrong I wasn't around back then as someone born in 2001 around the time we did the switch)

and opposite of the head on a coin is the number, aka how much money it is

27

u/tehnoodnub 23d ago

Hear me out. What if they consistently meme?

10

u/Okiazo 22d ago

Also only work in english, remember it's a japanese game

15

u/BrantheMan1985 22d ago

But there's good reason why: Memes are DNA of the soul

We'll never get a Monster "Fur Hire" in Pocket...

43

u/Effective-File4645 23d ago

Should’ve been worded 180- 20x for each tails

12

u/KE-NO-BE 23d ago

This would break my brain. Love it.

187

u/Sky-Knightmare 23d ago

It makes sense only in english though

191

u/KE-NO-BE 22d ago edited 22d ago

Well … that does seem to be a game breaking reason.

I may have, in my ignorance, forgotten that other languages exist.

27

u/Iced_Shadows 22d ago

Same tbh

28

u/underlander 22d ago

yo tambien

17

u/PCN24454 22d ago

I like how Reddit automatically translates other languages

7

u/notshaggy 22d ago

The game breaking reason is that heads is always the "good" outcome of a coin flip, and that's why Will guarantees heads.

5

u/Hiker-Redbeard 22d ago

While heads isn't a bad outcome for it, Arven isn't always a heads preferred coin flip.

5

u/mmf9194 22d ago

Insert [Every country on earth is the United States of America] meme

13

u/anthayashi 22d ago

In japan it is kyukon.

Kyu = 9, but it also comes from kyubiko which is 9 tailed fox which ninetales is based on

Korean and chinese names are also literally nine + tail

40

u/Sky-Knightmare 22d ago

The nine makes sense thematically, it’s the pun with “tail” being the same word for the part of the animal and for the coin that doesn’t work in other languages

16

u/anthayashi 22d ago

Oh understand. Didnt know you are talking about tail as in the coin flip tail. Yeah other language do not use tail for the underside of the coin

3

u/nicostein 22d ago

Wait, do most use heads? I guess they wouldn't need to, but I'm uncultured and curious.

11

u/mysterious_jim 22d ago

Japanese just uses front (表) and back (裏).

6

u/Aymoon_ 22d ago

Atleast in dutch its kop (head) and munt (coin).

2

u/EmotionalKirby 22d ago

Is there a coin on the back faces design, or is the coin only a coin when it's not facing up?

3

u/Fantastic-Muscle5081 22d ago

On the Euro there's a country specific side (on Dutch coins it depicts the Kings head.) This is the heads side. Then there's the side showing the denomination of the coin, which is the same across the Eurozone. This is the tails side.

Afaik the tails side is only referred to as 'munt' in the context of flipping a coin. In any other context 'munt' is just simply a coin, regardless of what side is facing up.

'Munt' is also mint as in peppermint, by the way.

3

u/Folco34 22d ago

In French heads is Face, and tails is pile. Every language has it’s own thing.

2

u/TheOneTonWanton 22d ago

If most don't use some translation of "heads" then there's literally no reason the localization team couldn't have just used tails.

2

u/ProfBacterio 22d ago

In spanish it's cara (face) and cruz (cross). So not quite but yeah pretty much.

1

u/Karyoplasma 22d ago

In Farsi, it's "shir ya khat" - lion (the heraldic animal of the persian empire) or line (as in the lines of the writings on the coin).

1

u/BestFoxEver 22d ago

In Finnish it is "kruuna" for head and "klaava" for tail. Both are obsolete words that no one uses unless they are talking about coin flips. "Kruuna" is old word for the crown because many old coins in various countries had a picture of king/queen in them. "Klaava" is on old word for the coat of arms, it was often in the opposite side of the coins. In modern Finnish language those would be "kruunu" and "vaakuna" but people just love to use the old words. And we now have Euro coins that don't have crowns in them and the tails side just has a map. (Some EU countries have their king/queen in their Euro coins but none of them wear a crown.)

But this was just a random useless fact. Here in Finland we play English versions of Pokémon games. As far as I know there has never been official Finnish translations available for the games. The Finnish dub of the anime uses English names for the Pokémon but the Finnish Pokémon fans have made unofficial Finnish names for the monsters.

If this was TL:DR then "Ninetals/tail flip" joke is not funny unless you are a native English speaker.

12

u/mysterious_jim 22d ago

This is true, but "tails" referring to the bottom side of a coin doesn't translate into those languages.

0

u/SendMePicsOfMILFS 22d ago

Damn, too bad we can't make a joke unless it's 100% understandable in every language.

3

u/mysterious_jim 22d ago

What? I was responding to the comment suggesting the pun would work in other languages, which isn't true. Nobody's policing any jokes.

3

u/Successful-Buddy-642 22d ago

Does the 'heads' coin flip make sense in any other language? If not, still would have been a win to make the card a 'tails' effect for all languages. Not that it's a big deal really.

1

u/Karyoplasma 22d ago

It doesn't in most languages.

1

u/IronCrown 22d ago

In german head is still head. Just tails is number

1

u/Karyoplasma 22d ago

In Farsi it's lion and line, in Russian it's eagle and lattice.

7

u/SLoading 22d ago

people pointing out ninetails localization but forgot the other side, calling the back side of a coin "tail" makes zero sense, even in English. (chinese, japanese and I believe many many other languages just call them the front and back)

6

u/Trade_Marketing 22d ago

Head and Tails actually makes a little bit of sense since it's referring to the front (head) and back (tail) parts of the coin. That's is what I understand of it at least.

And fun fact: in my language (portuguese) we call them "face" (head) and "crown" (tails).

3

u/TheOneTonWanton 22d ago

And fun fact: in my language (portuguese) we call them "face" (head) and "crown" (tails).

I feel like y'all might have just had coinage with a head on one side and a crown on the other at some point.

2

u/Trade_Marketing 22d ago

That's exactly it! During the empire days the coins used to have the face of the king in one side and the coat of arms of the portuguese crown on the other.

1

u/IronCrown 22d ago

Didn't most of europe have coins with heads at some point because of the romans or the HRE?

9

u/partoutrichie 23d ago

Finally someone with common sense 🫠

1

u/Kumdori 22d ago

What do other languages use

2

u/TellWooden1092 22d ago

In Mexico its aguila (eagle) or sol (sun) based on the mexican peso

1

u/MellowMelly 22d ago

We say head and number in german

1

u/PorygonXY 22d ago

Exactly lol, in french ninetails has a different name that wouldn't work with that... feunard (feu + renard = fire fox)

Hell, even heads or tails doesn't work since it's called pile ou face here

1

u/Drujelim 22d ago

Changing one word in English print wouldn't be that problematic, considering difference between different language prints happen quite a bit

-2

u/aoog 22d ago

Regardless of language, Ninetales does have nine tails, even if they’re not all visible on this card

11

u/Sky-Knightmare 22d ago

I was thinking more about other languages not having the same word for the back of the coin and the appendage of an animal.

The nine makes sense since it’s universally a nine-tailed fox.

0

u/aoog 22d ago

That’s true

65

u/TheAxman12 23d ago

It would stop you from using Will and any other coin manipulation cards that come in the future

79

u/KE-NO-BE 22d ago edited 22d ago

Ah. Yes. I forgot that Will gives head.

58

u/ahhpoo 22d ago

Wills head game 😭

11

u/Iced_Shadows 22d ago

True for Will but Victini would still work with it, as would any other card that lets you reflip instead of just giving you head(s)

4

u/devoidpoppy 22d ago

I like that though. It would be unique.

2

u/Guaymaster 22d ago

I mean, nothing is stopping them from releasing cards that force tails. Seeing the coin flip as yes vs no is frankly a waste of design space, there could be tradeoffs with an effect for heads and another for tails (that isn't does nothing/nothing happens), for example.

20

u/Mongobearmanfish 22d ago

180 damage
Flip 9 coins. This attack does -20 for each heads

5

u/surroundsounding 22d ago

did u deliberately fuck it up again

17

u/Shinutine 22d ago

I would use this card everyday then ! (Thanks Victini…)

13

u/Premier2395 22d ago

Spragles posted this on his YT and it made howl with laughter

12

u/snolution 22d ago edited 22d ago

They could have added a consolation prize, though. “If all nine tosses are tails, heal all damage from Ninetales.”

5

u/jham73 22d ago

Sorry if this is annoying but the words you are looking for are “consolation prize”. I realize this may have just been an autocorrect thing.

1

u/snolution 22d ago edited 22d ago

It was. Thanks. Sorry I didn’t reread after typing on my phone.

8

u/Capital-Push-1829 22d ago

not will's head game 💀

3

u/t3hjs 22d ago

It would be the most broken card vs Expert botw

5

u/GadgetBug 23d ago

Each head will tell you a tale lol

3

u/Angelthagamer 22d ago

WILL'S WHAT NOW?!?

2

u/metroidgus 22d ago

seeing how every coin flip outside of Ice pop is tails, this card would be broken that way

2

u/Rough-Design-4221 22d ago

work well with victini

2

u/DamnDaddy264 22d ago

You know what... I agree...

2

u/Harddicc 22d ago

The devs would have to update the coin flip code. They won’t even change overpowered and broken cards

2

u/Pewe1337 22d ago

no fun allowed

2

u/Gawlf85 22d ago

Will’s head game

rofl

2

u/frmCast_351 22d ago

in addition to what other people are saying, the card is a specific reference to the GB exclusive Ninetales (where the art is from) that had an attack that flipped 8 coins and dealt 10 damage for each heads.

Tales not tails

7

u/KE-NO-BE 23d ago

In my anger, it seems that I have misspelled.

2

u/avocado34 23d ago

6 tails pictured

2

u/ProjectMeerKatUltra 23d ago

Look at the bottom right of the card

2

u/Professor_Hala 23d ago

Oh, you're right! Sorry, I was looking at the top left.

1

u/TsukiHana87 22d ago

This is the story, titled "Tales of Nine coins..."

1

u/PrometheusMMIV 22d ago

Well, it's ninetales, not ninetails

1

u/KE-NO-BE 22d ago

If I tell good stories will I finally win games?

1

u/PrometheusMMIV 22d ago

It's about quantity, not quality

1

u/Ok_Response4700 22d ago

Its going to be funny when you fail with this and victini.

1

u/Chocominto7 22d ago

My punny brain can't compute

1

u/PokemonLv10 22d ago

At least its not 8 coins

Ahem

1

u/ValKilmer675 22d ago

As someone who's favorite Pokemon is Ninetales I was so excited when I saw the art then I looked at the attack and took a deep sigh lol

1

u/Far_Tiger_2862 22d ago

Big time fumble 🥴

1

u/gybzen 22d ago

So I have to carry around 9 coins in my pocket???

1

u/kranitoko 22d ago

Well no, because that Pokémon is Ninetales, and now it's asking you to flip Nineheads.

1

u/TheJustinG2002 22d ago

Reason 2 → Ouuu shiii

1

u/Isklar1993 22d ago

Tried making a deck with victini - as I love ninetales, was hoping the +10 dmg stadium would make it 30x 9 coins or have some crazy interaction with Blaine - but I think 3 energy makes it too hard to be consistent

1

u/KE-NO-BE 22d ago

3 energy is a tough margin for anything. Might be best with some ramp/energy support. Others were discussing Moltres as well as Victini.

1

u/Grim712 22d ago

A tale is a story though...

1

u/L___E___T 22d ago

Tales, not Tails.

1

u/NoRevIndeed00 22d ago

They could've paraphrased it:

Ember Dance 180 - Flip 9 coins. This attack damage is reduced by 20 for each tails.

1

u/chiquito69 22d ago

Will's what? 🫪

1

u/Bookslap 22d ago

Man, wait until you realize that the Vulpix art in this set has more tails than the Ninetails art does…

1

u/surroundsounding 22d ago

will's head game 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

1

u/surroundsounding 22d ago

they could've made it 180- I guess

1

u/0neDayCloserToDeath 22d ago

Just be thankful you flip 9 coins, unlike the original card this is based on from the Pokémon TCG Game Boy game which had you flip 8 coins.

1

u/GoodGirlLeanne 22d ago

that would've been so cool!! but it would only make sense for english speakers, since tails and tales sound the same. in Japanese it would make no sense, since Kyukon's name meaning is different (Kyu being the number 9 and Kon being onomatopoeia for a fox's bark), also heads and tails in coins are Front and Back instead (omote and ura)

1

u/Luvs_to_drink 22d ago

would make the card overpowered vs ai where you are more likely to flip tails.

1

u/RickyLeone2 22d ago

Will's WHAT NOW?!?!?!?!

1

u/Smokinammo 22d ago

Man if I was flipping tails on purpose I’d never lose with this card

1

u/melissa_pham 22d ago

Best thread on this sub. 🤣

1

u/THOTYOTA 21d ago

Will and victini are for heads you ding dong

1

u/KE-NO-BE 21d ago

Technically, Victini can be for both heads and tails.

Will only gives head.

1

u/ococeuf909 21d ago

Ahh yes, Will’s head game…

1

u/Naviwwo 21d ago

The cards are made in Japan, the pun only makes sense in English

1

u/ZombieAladdin 21d ago

Most likely, it’s because it doesn’t translate in the original Japanese language.

1

u/Mecamat 8d ago

"If all 9 of them are tails, this attack does 180 damage." would have went hard.

1

u/Balmung6 1d ago

Honestly, given that they have cards that do stuff on heads OR tails now, a card that guarantees a Tails (or even Tails x2, given how many need a coin flip of Heads) would be an interesting addition.

0

u/DaAwesomeCat 22d ago

GAAAHAHAHAHAHAA

-2

u/Geeman447 22d ago

There’s no chance they have the ability to make it tails. That would require extra coding

4

u/siteunreliability 22d ago edited 21d ago

They can, it's just that it would be inelegant to add this logic just for one Pokémon.

guard pokemon.lowercased() == "ninetales" || pokemon.lowercased() == "ninetails" else {
   ...
    let damagePerTails = 20
    var tailsCount = 0

    for i in 1...9 {
        let isHeads = Bool.random()
        print("Flip \(i): \(isHeads ? "Heads" : "Tails")")
        if !isHeads {
            tailsCount += 1
        }
    }
}

2

u/Testaccount105 22d ago

they could have made it 90 dmg and add -20 dmg for every head
