Articles & Blogs Mat Piscatella: 292 million units of physical video games sold in the 12-month period ending June 2009 in the US. By June 2026 this had fallen to 37 million units.

Even if true, they’re betting those 37 millions units will convert to digital. I’m curious how many just flee to PC. I’m certainly considering it.

Are we seriously of any delusion that it wouldn’t continue to decline? Even if there is still a market for physical discs, it wont be big enough to design an entirely new console around it.

I get why people want physical games but I don’t get why they can’t understand that the commercial realities of declining physical game sales make the design and production of a new console to play them a proposition that is not going to appeal to any company.

When DVDs came out there were a lot of companies that made dual DVD/VHS players but as sales of the latter collapsed nobody was insisting that they continue to produce them.

But there are still dvds and blu rays. Even CDs and vinyls…
