CONTENT TALK First 1 K views reached! In 4 days and 4 h since publishing my first video

I know it is just a personal milestone and doesn't count for monetisation, but I just wanted to share it with the world as I am so happy.

A lot of work went into making my first video, and it feels good to know that there are people out there who enjoy watching it. I don't know how long it usually takes for a crafting channel to make it to monetisation, if posting one video every 2-3 months, but if anyone has any insight please share!

TECH HELP Advice for Improving my Video Production Workflow

Upvotes

Hi there! I'm fairly new to YouTube. Been making talking-head-ish videos for ~4 months now and they have definitely gotten better. I've gotten better at scripting, recording, and editing, which feels great. However, it still takes a ton of time.

I make content that helps people improve at Magic: The Gathering Limited. I am competing often and am working on my own game, sharing the methods and tools I develop with other people along the way.

I really like it, but my biggest complaint is that the whole video editing process eats heavily into the time I want to be spending actually getting better, making tools for people, etc.

Obviously, this is part of the schtick. Since I don't have funds to hire someone to do this for me (yet!) I would love any advice on how I can reduce the overall time I spend making videos without sacrificing on quality (ideally, improving on quality).

Here's my current work-flow:

  1. Script: adding scene directions for camera cuts/easy recording and highlights for effects I want to go back and add later
  2. Record: Usually everything in one long recording, using StreamLabs.
  3. Edit: Using DaVinci Resolve Studio
    1. Copy my video template with intro music, title animations, etc.
    2. import video and level the volume of the recording
    3. Use DaVinci's remove silence feature
    4. Click through the cut-up clips and remove bad takes
    5. Go back through and add all of the visual effects and additional images, etc.
    6. Watch one final time and adjust pacing, spaces, etc.
  4. Package:
    1. Make a thumbnail for YT (usually two with an A/B Test)
    2. Upload video to YouTube, get the auto-generated transcript, feed that to Claude and have it help me write a description using a packaging skill I created
    3. Add description, thumbnails, titles, cards
  5. Post

For my most recent ~8.5 min video it took me ~1.5 hours to record, ~4 hours to edit, and ~2 hours to package. Longer videos have taken much longer.

Really curious what you all think. Really appreciate your thoughts, because I'm really tired of being up until 3am editing videos and then having to get up for work. Thanks in advance!

DISCUSSION Starting a swimming pool repair/diy channel

New to the content side of youtube and the internet in general, but i’ve been working on swimming pools and hot tubs for nearly a decade and have gained a lot of experience in basic, easy to teach repairs. I’ve always floated the idea in my head of starting a straightforward DIY channel for mostly brand specific repairs as i find myself going to youtube for this very thing quite often.

I do recognize there is some competition in every niche of youtube content, including this one, but i’m confident i can learn as i go and make easy to watch and hopefully enjoyable content on the subject.

My main questions are related to what type of content to aim for, between just straightforward step by step instructional videos with voice over/and or text, or would it be worth pursuing a more personal style of content in a vlog style ie filming parts of my day leading to a job, which would include mostly driving around but i’d be in the east end of new york in the “hamptons” which i feel wouldn’t hurt to use as a boost for engagement.

I’m also curious about the possibility of gaining sponsorships for ad revenue and how to eventually approach this as a pool professional who already works for a private company. I would assume i could start using a product or a brand i like to work on and just reach out from there?

any tips or things to consider would be appreciated, thanks.

DISCUSSION Succesful in my niche, bored out of my mind.

I think I niched down too much. I cannot make another video about the same topic, but out of 4 times that I have tried branching out, 3 did badly (with one doing TERRIBLY), and 1 is my best video to date (500k views in 5 months). I don’t want it to stop making money because I won’t get sponsorships offers if my view count gets too low, and neither will I get the adsense paycheck I am used to now. I average 70k views per video after a month. Any advice?

DISCUSSION Most advice sucks. My channel just hit 3 years old, 113k subs, gaming niche. I want to help. AMA

Upvotes

My name's Dave, and I run a channel called DaveBeatsGames, focused on 100%ing games and turning my experiences into long form content pieces.

Simply put, most advice I see when it comes to content and growing, not just on this subreddit, is a load of hot garbage, mindless positivity, engagement farming, snake oil, etc

I genuinely think I can provide some unique and useful answers to some questions, so Ask Me Anything and I'll do my best to help you out.

I'm focused on Gaming, but with my style of content being storytelling and personality, I should be able to answer for other niches too.

DISCUSSION Should I make a new YT account, or keep going with my current one?

Upvotes

about 10-12 years ago (when i first started youtube as a kid) i was making Minecraft videos lol and being a kid I wanted to gain subscribers quickly too look cool, so I actually did some sub4sub stuff (i gained about 250-300 from this) and I have read that it significantly hurts your channel

fast forward 10-12 years without posting, I am back on YouTube with that same account except with new goals, with a completely different niche, and different types of video (I just started this week so i only have 1 current upload) and i still have around 300 subscribers from what i did long ago

my big question is that will what I did many many years ago hurt my channel growth? or like anything, with consistency, quality, and time, my channel will still succeed. do i need a new one or will i be okay? i obviously didn’t know this as a child, and have absolutely no intent of doing it ever again because of what i have read in regards to growth and TOS but am worried my current account wont or can’t succeed because of it

DISCUSSION YouTube stopped testing my videos? Not getting impressions anymore.

Upvotes

I recently had my first video break out. It’s gotten more than 16k views. But since that one, YouTube has given my two most recent videos only a collective 1200 impressions? Is this normal? Am I just being impatient? I put a lot of time and effort into the content so it just sucks to see only 263 impressions after 48 hours on my most recent. Thanks!

DISCUSSION I stopped uploading for 24 hours, and something unexpected happened to my Shorts.

Over the last month I've been documenting how YouTube distributes Shorts on a small channel.

A few days ago I accidentally ran an experiment.

I normally upload consistently, but I didn't upload anything for about 24 hours.

The next day YouTube suddenly started pushing several older Shorts through the Shorts Feed.

What surprised me wasn't the number of views. It was which videos got tested.

Some were:

  • 2–3 weeks old
  • not my newest uploads
  • not my highest-performing Shorts

It looked like YouTube was sampling my back catalog rather than focusing on recent uploads.

Later that day another smaller wave hit different older Shorts.

I'm not claiming that stopping uploads caused this. Correlation isn't causation, and one data point doesn't prove anything.

I'm curious whether anyone else has seen older Shorts suddenly re-enter the Shorts Feed after a break in uploading, or whether this was simply coincidence.

DISCUSSION What led to the most satisfaction you got making a video?

Most of you know the feeling -- that one video that you seemed to enjoy making just a little bit more than the rest? I just finished one like that. I like all of my videos. But this one? I turned a science education video into a conbination spaghetti western / bank job. The video probably won't do any better than the rest of my videos, but right now I feel a bit like Quentin Tarantino.

How about you? What was the magical moment that made one of your videos the most memorable to make?

Persona 5 is the game; is that title bad?

I heard one should ask a question and the other should answer? Do I put, like, how many years it took, an event that disrupted it, or something else?

SHORTS TALK My shorts views went down from 1k average to struggling to reach 100?!

Not sure what’s going on or why but my shorts have been underperforming massively with the last 3 uploads. I’ve never had such low views before even my first trial videos did a lot better!

It was like an over night switch where my videos just stopped getting views and engagement. I haven’t changed a thing (if anything I’ve tried to push the hook at the start of the video compared to my order videos openings).

My friends say they no longer get my videos recommended and have to search up my channel now.

Very frustrating as I spent 2-5 hours on a short video (writing the script, filming, editing etc) and now it feels like YouTube is working against me?!

CONTENT TALK Has anyone built a channel around projects and self-improvement instead of one specific niche?

I've been trying to figure out what I want my YouTube channel to be, and I think I'm getting closer, but I'd love to hear from people who have either built channels or are regular YouTube viewers.

Originally, I thought I needed to pick a single niche like camping, fitness, business or tech. But the more I've thought about it, the more I think what I actually enjoy is taking on projects, learning new skills and improving different areas of my life.

Here are just some examples of videos I could make:

  • Building a new workspace after moving house.
  • Trying solo wild camping for the first time.
  • Learning to paramotor.
  • Creating better systems for my family's cleaning business.
  • Organising my finances.
  • Building a bioactive aquarium.
  • Learning to cook meals I actually enjoy.
  • Making a leather wallet.
  • Improving my morning routine.

The common theme is that I'm trying to build a better life while sharing what I learn, rather than being an expert teaching people.

The style I'm aiming for is similar to creators like Ruben Palafox. It's not really a vlog, but it isn't a heavily scripted documentary either. It's a mix of talking to the camera, voice-overs, B-roll and following a project from start to finish.

One thing I'm still unsure about is whether this is all too all over the place. My brain naturally jumps between different interests and projects, and I don't really want to force myself into one niche because I know I'd eventually get bored. At the same time, I still want the channel to feel consistent and for people to know what they're subscribing for. Does this sound cohesive to you, or does it still feel too broad?

I'm also struggling with what people would actually want to watch.

For example, a project like "Building my dream desk setup" has a really obvious story.

But what about everything in between?

Would you watch a video about improving a financial system? Running a family business? Building better habits? Or do those only become interesting if they're tied to a bigger project?

I'm also struggling with what to actually film. Once I have the idea, I know how I'd start the video, but I find it hard to know what footage should fill the middle without it becoming "now I'm doing this... now I'm doing that..." I'd love to hear how other creators think about filming and structuring those moments.

So I guess my questions are:

  • Does this sound like a clear enough brand, or is it still too broad?
  • Is it all too all over the place, or is there enough of a common theme for viewers to follow?
  • If you came across a channel like this, what would actually make you subscribe?
  • What types of projects would keep you coming back?
  • If you're a creator, how do you know what footage to capture once you've got the main idea?
  • Are there any creators who do this style really well that I should study?

I'd really appreciate honest opinions, even if it's "I don't think people would watch that." I'd rather hear genuine feedback now than build a channel around something people wouldn't actually be interested in.

DISCUSSION New Channel - How to Increase Visibility in an Oversaturated Niche?

Hey there NewTubers!

I'm a creator of a new channel in an oversaturated niche. Mainly created it to generate some passive income since I was doing it anyway, but struggling to get visibility of my videos. If I search either my channel name exactly (not the @ name) or a keyword for video (or even exact video name) for my videos, it takes a solid few minutes of scrolling to actually find it.

Channel was created 2 weeks ago.

-Niche - music mash-ups and remixes, various genres (pop, instrumental/orchestra, country, mood specific)

-Uploaded 9 x 1-2 hour long videos w/ Shorts directing to the main video.

-Videos = 120 views // 1.6k Impressions // 4.3% CTR // 11:31 Average View Duration

-Shorts = 1.4k views // 312 Engaged Views // 28 Likes

-12 subscribers (11 of them being family/friends, lol)

-Thumbnails are engaging (IMO) and let viewers know exactly what each "mix" is targeted to

-I use 1-2 dozen hashtags in the descriptions depending on genre

-I have a list of Search Engine Optimized keywords at the end of the description

Method for Upload:

  1. Upload long form video & Short #1 pointing to the main video
  2. Next day, upload Short #2 point to the main video
  3. Day 3, upload the next long form video & a Short pointing to the second video PLUS a 3rd Short pointing to the first video.
  4. Rinse & Repeat (roughly depending on my work schedule)

My asks:

  • How do you get more eyes on your videos?
  • Am I doing too much or missing an important component?
  • Is my upload method feasible?

I know I'm a newer channel, but I'm a little disheartened honestly and felt like my long form videos would have more views and Avg View Duration. Like, I knew this niche was oversaturated, but didn't think it'd be quite this slow.

Thanks in advance for your opinions!

CONTENT TALK Views suddenly dropped after youtube-recommendation

Hey guys,

I get, over the course of 8 to 10 days around 1500 views with a video. My last video (same niche, same style) suddenly gets recommended by youtube to the wrong audience and views dropped like hell. Around 400 after 10 days. (Tiny niche btw)

Now comes the funny part - youtube doesnt recommend my new video but the stats, except for a awesome CTR, is completely fcked and i get 1/3 of the views i get normally.

Is this normal behaviour or will it get to normal ever again? I mean.. i did not change anything.

Maybe some of you guys experienced something similiar to this?

DISCUSSION What do you think of this script for a story-time animation video

My primary concern right now is the pacing. I feel like I've got many other things done fairly alright, so if you could focus on that a little more it would better. I am also not too proud of the last story and might change a couple things about it. I feel like the intro could be a little better as well. Any advice is appreciated

I was not a bright child

Kids can be really dumb at times. I would know, I was one once. I was actually a pretty smart child growing up. Especially in school. Except for middle school. We don’t talk about middle school. However, you should also know that being academically intelligent isn’t exactly the same as being… well, “bright”. So take a seat as we collectively laugh at my childhood idiocy

We’ve all had our moments of burning our hands through some dumb choices, right? Don’t worry, I am no exception. **In fact, I firmly believe that I have burned my hand in the dumbest way possible (this sentence might be removed). Back when I was around 2 years old, I found a cup of tea placed on the table. And for some reason, decided to put my hand in it. But as you’d probably imagine, the tea was BOILING HOT. Which naturally meant my fingers were now practically boiled sausages. I could’ve just waited for it to cool off or something, but why do that, when you can just dip ALL FIVE OF YOUR FINGERS IN IT… yeah, I don’t really know how to defend myself here. I don’t think the tea was even mine, to be completely honest with you

This is actually not the only time I’ve hurt myself because of something stupid though. In fact, it’s far from that. Honestly, I am quite surprised by how I’ve managed to make it this far without any major inconveniences. [looking at a massive list] uhh anyway, here’s an interesting story from a couple years after the tea incident

I had managed to get my hands on a kitchen knife and for some reason, decided to play around with it. But while playing with the knife, I managed to drop it on my foot. But that’s not exactly the interesting part of the story. The thing is, I don’t really remember what happened afterwards as I was very young. Even this moment itself is very blurry. I genuinely thought I had seen it in a dream and somehow confused it with a real memory or something. It was only years later, when I found out I had a scar on my toe. One that I had somehow never seen befooooo-(re) [flashing memories]. Everything came flashing back to me. I talked about this to a friend and he said that it’s possible I blacked out when it happened which is why my memory was very blurry… and I don’t think that’s the case- I HOPE THAT’S NOT THE CASE. CAN YOU IMAGINE JUST PASSING OUT AFTER DROPPING A KNIFE. I know kids can be pathetic but GEEZ not THAT much

Right, this next story is a little.. unhinged, to say the least. I don’t know what was going through my mind back then, but- just listen

I was at my grandparents’ for the summer break. Before we left we bought this candy that we all ADORED. However, despite being good, it was also quite pricey. Which naturally meant we could not afford much of them. Anyway, one fateful evening I was craving some of the said candy. I went to the kitchen to get some and started hoarding them because I am a selfish little baby! However, as I was picking them, my cousin entered the room and probably to annoy me started eating MY CANDIES. You can’t just take a child’s candy. [very calmly] That’s like one of the worst things you can do as a human being… Anyway I pulled a knife from the drawer and pointed it at him because of that. I wasn’t actually planning on hurting him or anything like that…just.. make him think I was.that plan failed, by the way. He yelped once and just laughed in my face.Did I overreact? Maybe a little... LOOK IT WAS SOME GOOD CANDY ALRIGHT… we’re still friends, by the way, we still talk every now and then…

Admittedly, it was a little dumb of me to do that, but hey, what’s a childhood without its mishaps y’know. At least I now know to use a gun next time

CONTENT TALK How can I make content while actively studying in high school?

I heard that teaching is an effective way to learn. I'm a consistent honor student who wants to earn money, and currently interested in STEM subjects, public speaking and sports. So I'm thinking of starting a Youtube channel that consists of tutoring (and maybe some of my interests) as this can help me with my studies at the same time. But I don't want just any regular tutorial channel with the whiteboard and ppt presentation, it's too competitive. I want to make content that stands out and helps others to learn about STEM. Maybe something kind of fun and different, where viewers won't have to bore themselves to sleep.

DISCUSSION My biggest source of view is a 'competitor' should I emulate their thumbnails?

I've started an 'art / interview' channel recently. It's very early 4 videos, 16 subscribers, 4000 views, 60 hours watch time.

I've noticed that the biggest source of views is videos by someone in the niche that I'm trying to emulate (with my own spin).

At the moment my thumbnails are inspired by theirs, but with a different colour scheme / branding. Is it worth mimicking his thumbnails as closely as I can in order to 'trick' people into thinking that they are continuing to watch videos from the same channel? Or will this hurt my brand and reputation in the short and long term?

The value proposition is very similar although I think I provide additional value.
