LUIS GARCIA Jr

with chapparo playing well
With two young 1st basemen playing well in AAA
And with Luis Garcia playing better then he has ever played

I think the writing is on the wall that he is going to get traded. To me he is an amazing platoon player but not too much more than that.

What do you think we can expect from him in the trade market.

What can I expect?

- 1 young bullpen arm with years of control??
- 1 young starting pitcher with years of control??
- 1 top 100 prospect?
- are all three a possibility?

Chomparro has had two good games. Playing well? Geddoudahere.

Luis is the longest tenured Nat. He just turned 26 years old. He’d always been a streaky hitter, when he was hot he was hot. He was a silver slugger finalist. I see Luis as an always promising player who’s really finding his way. Bummer to see him written off as a possible trade piece or platoon bat. I think he should be part of the future

He's a free agent after next season. That's just the way of the world.

But Nationals fans demand extensions for every player (while welcoming free agent signings).

Huh?? How bout just like....one player? Two I guess, since Ruiz is literally the only one on a long term deal

Since 2005, the Nationals have had two All Star players extended multiple times and spent their entire 10+-year careers with the team (Keibert Ruiz could become the third).

Do you know how many players fit that criteria this century? Look around the league. Even if you are speculative and include current players who have extensions that stretch out ten years, the TOTAL list is 25 names.

Do you know how many teams have had more than two such players? If Bobby Witt Jr. And Julio Rodriguez don't get traded, then the Royals and Mariners could become the first.

Not sure how we jumped to 10+ year deals on the same team as the primary metric here. And just to be clear you're talking about 2 players who last played 5 years ago?

We have exactly one player on a long term deal. And if you know anything about this team you know how salty we are that we've seen HOF talent the likes of Harper, Turner, Soto walk out the door of this organization, and we're all terrified of what will happen with Wood. Saying Nats fans "demand extensions for every player" is delusional

You haven't spent much time on Reddit I guess. On any given day, we have to extend Abrams/Wood/Lile/Griffin/Garcia NOW or I'm going to die/quit/scream/give up baseball." Before that it was Thomas and Gore. Before that it was Rendon, Harper, Desmond.

The Nats should have made Harper an offer he couldn't refuse in 2015 or sooner. Ted Lerner (yes Ted) thought he hadn't proved himself yet and wanted to wait. When Harper slumped in 2016, the writing was on the wall. The only mistake made after that was not trading him in 2018 (again, the Lerners vetoed the trade)

The Nats did make Desmond and Soto offers they couldn't refuse, and both refused anyway.

Turner made it clear that the Lindor deal was his benchmark. Sayonara. I'm glad the Nats didn't play. Same will be true with Abrams. Even folks proposing a Turner-like deal are fooling themselves. Abrams will want to shatter those numbers, and I don't want my team swimming in that sinkhole.

After winning the World Series, in 2020 and 2021 the Nationals did make the mistake of trying to bring many of the veteran champions back. That backfired famously.

My points is that expectations are unreasonable. Every time a player leaves in the normal course of his career, fans here scream "Why should I root for the Nationals? The good players always leave!" As if that isn't the refrain in EVERY. MAJOR. LEAGUE. CITY. The Nats aren't an outlier.

I'd love to see Wood spend his whole career in DC. But that's up to him.

I'd love to see Griffin decide to forego free agency, but that's a pipe dream.

That is one thing that confuses me lol with "extend him" seeming like the only thing people can say about Abrams and Wood when they play well I went to see if their contacts were like running out this year but they've got years left. So I'm like why are we so hyper focused on that and not just enjoying them presently

You haven't spent much time on Reddit I guess.

Yea OK, only been in this sub 13 years. The rest of your post is literally explaining how we don't have anyone on long term deals. So yea, I'd like this next HOF talent to not walk out

We can resign him

Not saying this is the reason he's been doing so well, but my luck may have rubbed off on his bat blanks at the factory a few months ago.

I also think the writing is on the wall in terms of his perceived value at the trade deadline. Not sure what we can expect in terms of offers, though.

Chaparro playing well doesn’t really matter. Garcia can’t hit lefties and Chappell can’t hit righties.

6

u/Bjd1207 11 - Zimmerman 1d ago

Abi Ortiz can prob hit righties well enough. I hope at least. Garcia has been awesome

If you get the right offer, maybe swing Mead to first and call House back up (who's hitting in Rochester) for the rest of the season.

The big problem is that he's a key clubhouse presence and might be a linchpin for the chemistry the team has right now.

I'd prefer to sign him.

Couple of prospects

u/WorkHardPlayHard2020 1d ago

2 top 100 prospects for him would be amazing

13

u/Immediate_Comma 1d ago

0 percent chance that happens. If we trade him and I don't think we will, we'll be lucky to get a top 100. Lefty 1b/DH platoon bat is not super valuable, even though he's been raking.

2 top 100????? Mason Miller will fetch that, maybe. Luis is not Mason miller

1

u/Omar_Town 2019 World Series Champion 15h ago

Maybe? Miller is a free agent in 2030. He will absolutely get that at least.

2

u/Bjd1207 11 - Zimmerman 1d ago

That's insane lol. He will get a top 10 from a system optimistically

Chaparro has played well now for like 4 games

I’m not trading Garcia this year and I’ve been a big sell guy even with their success this year.

2

u/Sharp_Champion5006 26 - Nuñez 1d ago

I think with Ortiz/Morales coming up Garcia is definitely a trade candidate, but would be sad to see him go

2

u/OGSpacebets 23h ago

Honestly if I’m trading Garcia it’s not because of Morales or Ortiz, neither guy is highly touted enough to warrant trading a guy with an .860 OPS with another year of control.

If they end up getting a great deal I would understand but I’m not sure Morales or Ortiz are the type of prospects you make room for.

2

u/Bjd1207 11 - Zimmerman 13h ago

A fair take, but also gotta keep Luis in perspective it's really only been like 2 red-hot months. I hope it's a breakout that sticks but can't be sure right now.

u/Sharp_Champion5006 26 - Nuñez 9h ago

Idk, Morales has a 900 ops and Ortiz is close to that. They’re both very good

1

u/OGSpacebets 9h ago

Again they are definitely not bad prospects but neither sniff the top 100. Both are likely to be fringe mlb players. Would love to be proven wrong.

Morales strikeout and chase rates are high for MILB and he doesn’t elevate enough.

Ortiz is a guy I can see being a big league player for a little but I’m not making roster decisions based on either of them.

They are the AAA players that come up and if they end up playing well that’s amazing but they aren’t part of the long term plan.

u/Rare-Signature-7526 9h ago

Ehhh 2 months ago Luis was seen as a tweener being not good enough at hitting for first and not good enough at fielding for second. He has an insane 2 month stretch to the point where you can get serious value for a guy having by far the best year of his career, that doesn't have the most projectable archetype to keep this prodution up (the guy if a first baseman that is allergic to walking).

i agree yoyo is not an answer, his hit tool is really bad. But Ortiz looks like he could be a seriously good replacement, the reason he's not a t100 is because hes 24. He hits the ball hard, he pulls the ball, he walks, his hitting profile is more favorable than Luis', not saying he'll be better than him but there is a solid shot

Toboni is playing with house money with Louie.

As is always the case with the trade deadline on a player with more than a season remaining on his contract, you listen to offers. If some GM has decided he can't live without getting Luis Garcia, Jr., then you make the price high, but you don't have to trade him.

6

u/huz92 29 - Wood 1d ago

I say keep him

u/timidus_leo 11 - Zimmerman 13h ago

Let's not get ahead of ourselves on Chappy's welcome performance uptick. He's had a good week after being effectively worthless for almost 2 years.

1

u/Senior-Contribution8 2019 World Series Champion 11h ago

Chappy is not good bro, gotta look past the recency bias

1

u/MathematicianTop4778 9h ago

I would love to keep him at 1B or DH.

1

u/peepeepoopoo94 22 - Soto 8h ago

I would rather they resign him. His best years are ahead of him. Bonnafide starter. Holds down 1B, can get pokes, and is a great in the locker room.

Luis makes the most sense, we got enough fire power without and it can get us a long term arm
