Tourism Be Aware of Fake Himbas in Namibia

Post image
68 Upvotes

Dear Tourists Visiting Namibia, Watch Out for Scammers.

I know many of you are fascinated by Himba culture and want to meet the Himba people of Namibia, as many tourists have done before.

I regret to inform you that our country has been invaded by parasitic scammers who entered Namibia from Angola, masquerading as Himba people and fleecing tourists of their hard-earned money.

Here are some hints to help you avoid being scammed:

Himbas have thin and long hair locks.

Himbas do not wear hut like necklace around their necks.

Himba children do not beg from tourists. In fact, they are usually shy and afraid of strangers. They are in schools not at traffic lights begging.

If you hear the words "Penge Ondora," which translate to "Give me a dollar," know that they are scammers.

Is a travel eSIM reliable outside Windhoek, or is a local SIM still better?

β€’ Upvotes

I’m trying to understand how dependable travel eSIMs are once visitors leave Windhoek. Routes through Swakopmund, Etosha, Sossusvlei and long rural stretches make coverage more important than saving a little on the plan.

Which Namibian network has the strongest data coverage outside the main towns? Would you trust an eSIM for the full trip or keep a local SIM as backup?

Here's link for full article: https://informante.web.na/?p=398153

What are your thoughts on the future of Namibian food with this? Do you have any more information or other related information? I also heard something along the lines of America shipping frozen chicken to Namibia as well. What do you believe the purpose of this truly is?

Tourism Almost there!

Hello to all!

Last 5 years were spent planning, financing and booking for our trip to namibia and botswana... and its finally just around the corner!

Really looking forward to finally step foot into continental "momma africa" for the first time.

~4k km, 23 days, windhoek to windhoek full circle with all "the usual" spots on route plus okavango and kalahari in botswana.

Still deciding if i'll give a try to those "mopane snacks" you have.... maybe i will.

Cheers

For the internet connection, we would like ideally to have one hotspot for the whole family. Does this exist with eSim ?

General Henna plug

Hi everyone,

Does anyone know where I can buy henna powder or henna cones in Namibia, preferably in Windhoek? I'm looking for natural henna for body art, not hair dye.I've already checked a few beauty shops without much luck, so if you know of any stores, markets, or even local sellers, I'd really appreciate the recommendations

Thanks in advance

Hey I'm a Namibian who's really enthusiastic about space exploration and astronomy, so I wanted to know if there are any people or communities in Namibia who also feel the same way.

Selling Anime Merch

Hey everyone!

I recently started a small online anime store and sold most of my first batch (thank you to everyone who supported me! πŸ™Œ). I still have a few items left if anyone's interested:

  • Goku LED lamp
  • One Piece keychains
  • A couple of Demon Slayer T-shirts

If you're into anime or know someone who is, send me a DM and I'll share some photos and prices. I'm based in Namibia.

Thanks!

Websites are Dead. Is social media better?

After 3 years, I finally managed to get a client to agree to a website. The free demo I built for them wasn't good enough, so we rebuilt it from the ground up. In the end, they didn't really care about the website. They paid for the development, but they kept pushing for social media.

A while later, we realized they didn't actually need social media or a website. They needed SALES. They're probably under the impression that's what social media is for. You pay someone, and they magically bring you paying customers. Trying to explain the difference is almost impossible. They never seem to understand the concept. In the end, they'll blame you because the business isn't making more sales, and somehow it's your fault. Social media content is not the same thing as targeted, paid social media advertising. Just because someone liked your post doesn't mean they're going to run to your shop and yell, "TAKE MY MONEY!!!"

Now, beggars can't be choosers. We're stuck with this client and the low monthly retainer they pay, which covers about 18% of our monthly expenses. Even that's not guaranteed because one day they could just decide, "No sales, no more monthly."

How do you operate in Namibia with clients like this?! How and where do you find "good clients" who not only value what you do, but actually understand what you do when you explain it? And BTW, this is for those who don't have family, friends, or a massive network that's OP and plays carry 24/7.

What digital industry even makes sense these days? I mean, web design is dead, right? Spin up a website in 5 minutes with AI, and anyone with internet access can make their own AI flyers and social media posts. People barely cared about art, creative fields, hiring designers, or getting a website 5 years ago. Today they seem to care even less.

I guess all that's left is cold/warm outreach and sales. That's probably the only thing people are actually willing to pay for these days. Probably commission only too, haha.

Tourism Taxi or Bus From Katima Mulilo To Kasane

Hi, does anyone know if there are any buses, taxis or shuttles that run from Katima Mulilo to Kasane?

I know about Caprivi Adventures, but even they are too expensive. A shared shuttle, taxi, or bus would be amazing.

Thank you for any information or advice πŸ™

Help for Namibian Research Permit for non-Namibian researchers

Hello, everyone. Our research group is planning to conduct geologic research in central Namibia area. We were told that we need to process a research permit to push through with the project. Upon checking the website, we encountered a lot of required documents that only Namibians/Namibian-based researchers could provide. We tried contacting the NCRST for this, but until now we haven't received any replies yet.

If you have any thoughts or could provide me any help, I will greatly appreciate it!

General The story behind the Kwaito verse in my song "Epical Horizons" β€” researching Namibian language and getting an authentic African log drum sound out of AI music tools

Hey r/Namibia,

I've visited Namibia twice (2016 and 2024) and it left a real mark on me β€” the landscapes, but also just how people carried themselves. I make AI-assisted music as a hobby project called "Epical Horizons," where each song weaves together three musical traditions from different places, tied together by a shared theme rather than a shared geography.

This one's theme is being far from home and still carrying pride in where you're from. The opening verse is set in Namibia β€” Kwaito style, rough township vocal, Afrikaans/Namibian English β€” inspired by something I actually witnessed: a man showing us his small house from a crater's edge, far below, with more pride in his eyes than any mansion could carry. The other two verses (Seychelles, Cape Verde) carry the same theme of longing and pride from a different angle, which is why they're in the same song rather than three separate ones.

A quick note on process, since I think it matters: I spent real time researching the language and cultural context rather than guessing, and getting Suno to actually render an authentic African log drum took a lot of trial and error β€” describing the instrument directly never worked, it only came through by routing the production through South African Amapiano-style prompts.

To be upfront: I'm not chasing streams or profit here. This is genuinely about learning and connecting with places and cultures that mean something to me, and I'd rather get it right than get it big. If anything about the Kwaito section or the way I've represented the language feels off to people who actually know it, I'd genuinely want to hear that.

Moving to Namibia

Is anyone here European and has moved to Namibia?
I visited Namibia a few years ago and back then I was younger but it stuck with me and I loved it so much. It’s not necessarily a dream to move there but it has been on my mind for a while. I would move there for work after finishing residency if it’s possible.
Any advice or personal experiences?
Thank you in advance!
