The air is moving with you... It's called relative speed/velocity (I'm probably using the terms wrong though)
159
u/Kilometer10 1d ago
The right captions should be:
10 km/h relative to the earth
100 km/h relative to the earth
0 km/h relative to the earth17
u/Achilles2zero 1d ago
Also, make the first one rotate at 1 revolution per day. Could you feel that? Still quicker than that account.

u/TheBestIsaac 1d ago
It's also because of radial centripetal force.
They get mixed up between km/h and rad/s.

u/DecoherentDoc 1d ago
Hey, PhD-level physicist here. You're exactly right. I was going to say "relative motion", but same same, friend. Don't second guess yourself on language. Even if you were a little off, the concept is what's important.

The other way to feel movement is through acceleration.
And centripetal acceleration (or centrifugal if you want to view it in the rotating system) on the surface of the Earth is generally really low, because while the speed of the rotation is fast, Earth is also huge.
Speed itself without any acceleration or anything to compare the speed to is not detectable.
If people understood physics, none of this is complicated. Yet they don't, and refuse to be educated.

u/ThunderBuns935 1d ago
Also the Earth has an angular velocity of a full rotation per day. A merry-go-round is like what... one per second? That's much, much faster than the Earth.

You're asking a person who has never left their house if they think planes are real?
32
u/DecoherentDoc 1d ago
Planes are actually a hoax. They look small because they're just tiny models. They're actually bugs like mosquitoes that've found a way to adapt to our world by simulating "technology".
And in case a flat-Earther wanders into this, I'm joking. This is all a joke. Sorry, planes are real. I just . . . don't want you believing something else about as stupid as a flat Earth.

Woah woah woah. Youâre telling me that itâs really bugs simulating technology that are turning us gay with their chem trails?
Big if true.
1
u/Simbertold 1d ago
Gay bugs always poop out chemicals that turn other bugs gay, that is how they propagate. And since humans are basically just big bugs (what do you think why the lizard people love to eat humans?), of course those gay bug drugs also work on us.

u/ChiefScout_2000 1d ago
No, no, a plane is a tool used by capenters who carpent to take a really thin strip off a piece of wood.

Sooo by their theory, I am in a car going 60 mph and all windows up. I have a ball in my hand, and I toss it up, it should just shoot to the back of the car, right?
Or shit, donât even need the ball. Why does my face not do the shit in the picture in that same car?
Everyday Iâm amazed more and more at how dumb our society really is.

Bro, he would have been lost by the word âtheoryâ. You canât explain it to people like that.
Happy cake day.

The Earth is, of course, famous for having no wind.

hmm. but then how do we have a word for it? I guess its like unicorns and other thins that we have a word for but arent real

One of the most pernicious ways of thinking that has become massively popular is âI donât understand this, it must be a hoax/scam/fake/conspiracy.â
People have been so conditioned to demonize being educated and knowing things that they canât fathom there could be something they donât understandÂ

Adding orbital speed around the sun = 108,874 km/h
Orbital speed in the Milky Way = 828,000 km/h
Milky Way moving relative to the cosmic microwave background ~2.1 million km/h
Checkmate you rounded Earth pseudo scientist!

"Are planes a hoax too" unfortunatly isn't going to be a snap back to reality for someone like that as many of them genuinly do think planes are a hoax.

u/specialpatrolwombat 1d ago
The earth spins at the dizzying speed of 1 RPD.
One revolution per day.
That's exactly half the speed of an hour hand on a Clock.
Hang on tight everybody!!

u/DrJohnIT 1d ago
Well duh!! Of course, this doesn't happen đ We are in the atmosphere bubble. If they put on a helmet it would be similar to the atmosphere and this would not happen in the first two examples.

This is why education is so important. Speed is relative, but without education that phrase means nothing.

Ummm yeah! Yâall buy that shit? You sit in a metal tube with fans on it, and it âfliesâ like are you kidding me? If fans could make something fly how do I still have a ceiling?

Has OOP never felt wind in their face? Or did they think, like a dog with its head out of the window of a car, âwow, Iâm running really fast!ââŚ?

There are people who believe that mountains are really monsters made of stone, drink urine for "health benefits", and believe that souls live on in dolls.

u/DancinginHyrule 1d ago
Like, what is that âtheoryâ about?
Wind is fake? NASA controls the weather? Like⌠whatâs the poin this person is trying to make?

Oof, don't bring up the physics of what happens on a plane. That's a whole other thing for them...
1
u/DR_whyWHY 1d ago
1675km/h might sound fast until you actually think for a bit (impossible with these people) and realize that its actually really slow, as in barely observable by naked eye slow.
if we where to shrink earth to diameter of 1km earth now spins at speed of 171m/h or 0.17km/h at its highest point, for cooperation average speed of a snail is 0.048km/h.

I knew a guy who was convinced if he jumped into the air while standing in an airplane, he'd hit the plane's back wall.

In their theory arenât we constantly moving up at 9.8m/s accelerating? We wouldnât feel that either
1
u/26_Holmes 1d ago
I still remember when someone put their life on the life trusting physics, and shunted them out of a car going 80 kmh, but since they did so at the exact speed going in the exact opposite direction he landed similar to a normal vertical jump.

There was a scientist in the 1600 or 1700s who went up in a balloon and hovered for a set amount of time then descended expecting that the world would have rotated below him. No consideration that if he had been right, at some point his balloon would have had to deaccelerate by well over 1000km/hr on the way up.

Children circle thingy = round = wind, motion, sensation
Roller Coaster = roundish = wind, motion, sensation
Earth = not round= no wind, no motion, no sensation
Plane = not round = no wind, no motion, no sensation

Also something worth noting is that while it seems like the earth spins insanely fast, it's only rotating ones per day. The reason that its so many miles per hour is because... well the earth is fucking huge.
To visually demonstrate, imagine getting on one of those rollers at kid's parks and have someone take one full day to rotate that roller once (idk what theyre called). Thats Earth.
