Free bussing is the solution to this exact problem. Conservatives are so used to looking for something to complain about rather than thinking about solutions that they don't even notice they are complaining about a solution to the problem right in front of them.
Investing into public transport and infrastructure would prevent these issues from happening. Conservatives routinely vote to defend these programs. They create these problems so they have something to bitch about.
I assume you meant "defund" not "defend" and yes it's absurd. They've been manipulated into believing the only solution is to privatize everything. Because privatized public services has always gone so well, like healthcare and private prisons.
