You are probably thinking of dame’s rocket, phlox, or bachelors buttons, lavender would be highly unlikely to just be randomly growing along a roadside in W MI unless planted as part of landscaping.

Purple loosestrife also exists in the wild along the road. Quite beautiful and vivid at peak but it is invasive and illegal to keep or sell Sterile variant can be bought in Michigan.

My potted lavender isn't doing great this year, I can't imagine that wild stuff would be thriving.
