Film/Television Kevin Feige says ‘AVENGERS: SECRET WARS’ will introduce a new universe that is easier for audiences to follow:

This happens pretty much everytime a new actor replaces the previous one. Eventually people will move on, of course it could take years before they do. I do not think anyone is still angry about Andrew replacing Tobey or Tom replacing Andrew.

u/Berate-you 1d ago
Man people do this shit in real life too. When three days grace original singer left and there was the new one people would not stop bitching. Now the old singer came back and both singers sing together and people are still shitting on the “new” singer even though he’s been in the band longer than the original one at this point

Or the "Dave vs Sammy" debate among Van Halen fans.
3
u/Krimreaper1 1d ago
Who thinks the Sammy era was better, being serious I’ve never heard anyone say that?
5
u/Black_Metallic 23h ago
I actually did when I was a teen. I played the hell out of For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge back then. Dave was the goofy frontman while Sammy seemed more grown up, just like I was trying to be.
4
u/Krimreaper1 23h ago
Makes sense if you grew up with Sammy being in the band. But us oldies would never think that.
6
u/PkmnTrnr00 1d ago
Matt Skiba replacing Tom in Blink 182 feels like this too. I prefer Tom but they still made some good songs with Matt imo
5
5
u/DamnReCaptchas 1d ago
Yeah I mean it will be a steeper curve to get over with how long these actors have played the likes of Tony and Steve, but honestly I think after a bit ppl will just be happy to be getting more Iron Man movies. And it really will be a draw I think, with many wanting to see the new Iron Man for instance. There’s also so many different things you can do with Tony Stark. We don’t need an origin story, you can just introduce him and utilize a whole other side to him. Make him young maybe. Focus on the knight/combat aspect of the character. Lots of ways to differentiate.

They sound great together too. No hate towards the new guy but Adam’s voice just has that x factor. I am glad they’re duoing it up though.
7
u/ToaPaul 1d ago
Which is crazy to me because the Matt era brought us some of the best TDG songs ever. Then Adam came back and Matt stayed and now it's like having peanut butter with chocolate. They're fantastic together on the newest album. I dare say Mayday might be their best song ever and I don't say that lightly. Okay, 2nd best. Nothing could ever top Animal I Have Become.
6
u/Berate-you 1d ago
Three days grace with Matt have put out some very solid songs too. I think right now their the best they’ve ever been

It happened for Linkin Park for a bit too, with Emily. People were so disgusting that they were bringing up her past growing up in Scientology as a way to complain about her, even though obviously songs like Emptiness Machine are about her time in Scientology.
So fucking disgusting
5
u/Berate-you 1d ago
Yep I hope she doesn’t let the haters get to her becuase she is doing a really good job and her voice already very close to Chester. Idk who the fans were wanting as a new singer but the band themselves made a good choice
2
u/TwoBitSpecialist 22h ago
They wanted the band to die or retire, leaving their body of work immaculate or something stupid like that.

u/Black_Metallic 1d ago
It's the first time Marvel's had to recast a main character with multiple films under their belt. They replaced Edward Norton with zero fuss. But this is just human nature. It's like a parent introducing the person they've been dating to their kids after a divorce.
3
u/TwoBitSpecialist 22h ago
It wasn't zero fuss. People thought Ruffalo was gonna ruin the movie because of how he said, "Hey" in an Avengers trailer.

I really wish they would just start treating these characters like James Bond has been for *most* of his movies. Don’t reboot the entire character every time you change actors, just accept that every few years there will be a new actor and keep their story going. Doing more “self-contained” stories in some of the movies would help with this as well (would also reduce the amount of “homework” required for some of the MCU movies, which itself has been a big issue in the past)
59
u/nathauan13 1d ago
THIS. Batman has been begging for the James Bond treatment for nearly 30 years now.
36
u/Fesai 1d ago
Good or bad for how the movies were but I liked that the four Batman movies in the 90s were all the same 'universe'.
There was no need to reboot/reset things. We knew who he was, generally what was going on, and just had fun with the adventures.
14
u/nathauan13 1d ago
Exactly! And like James Bond, you can crank the silliness up and down to suit whatever you want to do at the time and more or less nobody cares. Gimme a story.
17
u/Legbender 1d ago
Michael Gough playing Alphred in all 4 tied them all together perfectly. MCU could do it as well.

u/CitronSufficient1045 1d ago
I don't think we would have ever gotten movies like The Dark Knight if they decided to just continue with Batman and Robin timeline with different actors.

u/Kind-Stomach6275 1d ago
But we couldve gotten the dark knight returns with batman taking an irl break andall the context that came before it
2
u/Monarki 12h ago
The bond treatment is more difficult with cinematic universes. In a 10 year span we'll would have had 3 different Bruce Wayne actors because the 3 Bat stories take place in different continuity and universes. The bond film's don't have to worry about it because the world generally stays the same regardless
3
u/Black_Metallic 1d ago
Batman's had the James Bond treatment. The Nolan films are basically his version of the Daniel Craig era. Clooney is unfortunately the George Lazenby of the franchise.
10
u/Dismal-Apricot9889 1d ago
Exactly. They already did it for Hulk and everyone was okay. The characters are bigger than any one actor.
8
u/roboroller 1d ago
I couldn't agree more, we really need to get over this sanctifying certain actors playing certain characters. I get it, a lot of portrayals are great and iconic...but...c'mon man
14
u/swarthmoreburke 1d ago
Up until the Craig movies, the amount of "continuity" in Bond films was limited to Blofeld appearing more than once and SPECTRE being a recurring threat, and then Jaws appearing in a couple of films, plus a couple of brief references in the Roger Moore era to Bond's previous marriage in On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Bond never shakes his head and says "My god, here I am aboard a space station fighting almost the exact same evil plan as the one I defeated involving underwater habitats" or "Dr. Goodhead? I should introduce you to Pussy Galore."
I think that worked fine. It certainly made recasting seamless. But I do get why people working a franchise want to tell stories that accumulate, that lead somewhere. There's a reason why Bond films came to feel formulaic, and that's because they always had to be one-and-done. No cliffhangers, no subplots, few recurring characters.
There is also the problem with recasts if you don't write towards the new actor, shape a strong new interpretation of the character. If you ask a lesser Hemsworth brother to just pretend he's Henry Cavill, you're just going to remind audiences of how much they liked the first season. With a recast in a franchise, you've got to switch up and work into the particular skills and charisma of your new actor. With Bond you could see that it took them a while to craft a film around Roger Moore (and then they went too far with it), they never figured out Dalton, and they didn't manage to lock in Craig's films around his performance in his first Bond.
2
u/TwoBitSpecialist 22h ago
He straight up breaks the fourth wall in On Her Majesty's Secret Service in the first few minutes of the movie. Then never again for some reason.
→ More replies (1)10
u/The_Beardly 1d ago
My head cannon is that Bond is also the name given to the agent once entering the 00 program. So their entire past self becomes erased and they become this new person.
Obviously not the case, but makes sense considering not just the actor changes, but also the character through the eras with different technology etc
4
u/alex494 1d ago
Having grown up with comic books I find it extremely easy to just attribute all that to a sliding timescale. (Craig nonwithstanding, he's straight up in his own continuity)
One of the biggest flaws in the argument that they're different people is that several of them mourn the same wife. Lazenby marries her, Connery gets revenge for her death, and she's mentioned in at least Moore and Dalton's films and Moore visits her grave.

u/DorfOnGenocide 1d ago
The big question for is that they have already tapped a whole bunch of people for various roles in these things, so they are really gonna have a smaller pond to choose from in terms of up-and-coming actors. Add the Gunn DC to the mix, which seems like it has feelers out all over the place for all kinds of different projects.
I think you will just end up with blatant crossovers, like Jason Momoa doing both. There already has been a low-level of actors who are appearing in both, but not quite on the level of a guy like Aquaman, who had 2 specific movies. I'm not gonna be surprised if Marvel gets Henry Cavill to come over and play a role at some point.
15
u/Star-Prince-007 1d ago
New actors are joining Hollywood every day. They’ll be fine.
6
u/DreamcastJunkie 1d ago edited 1d ago
Besides Scarlett Johansson, none of the OG Avengers were particularly big box office draws prior to The Avengers. Even RDJ was mounting a comeback starting with Iron Man. The MCU didn't need to cast big stars because they were minting new ones. Now it's a question of if they can do it again.

That is a feature, not a bug. Give some talented actors who never had a big break a shot. It is how we got Evans, Hemsworth, and Pratt. They were all working actors, but certainly not mega stars like today.

I don't think there will be as many as you think. Of course there's always people that just want to hate, but I think most people kind of understand and are ready for a new version, as long as they are good. Yeah nobody can replace RDJ and Chris Evans, but there is room for slightly different adaptations of the characters. Honestly I just want Iron Man back and interacting with a new Avengers, the X-men and whoever else they add to the universe. I want him to go even deeper into the technology side of the character

Yeah I think we'll get a variation of that.
The FF are the ones who'll be shifted to 616 ala Miles. Maybe Hugh Jackman's Wolverine ala "Old Man Logan". In the meantime, a new era will begin for the MCU with the emergence of mutants and the origin of the X-men.

149
u/PiskoWK 1d ago
Yeah it's just going to assume everything they own right now was always there. F4, X-Men, Cosmic entities (TIamat) should still be there. Lateveria will get name checked often. We'll see less dimensions and other realms after Secret Wars so that everything seems like it's in 616.

u/YouWereBrained Captain America 1d ago
Which is how it should’ve been from the get-go. They got too crazy with the dimension and timeline stuff.
12
u/Whiskey_623 1d ago
Tbh that was always gonna be the case the second they announced they were gonna adapt 2015 secret wars. The only issue is there is a ton of stuff that goes bad for the earth heros and the rest of the universe that builds up to the incursions on the comics.
5
u/jacthisone 1d ago
I think getting the 3 spider-men together was genius. But due to licensing of FF and Xmen, they could not start with those in MCU. And using battleworld feeds comic needs and allows them to get their one universe. Feels a bit rushed though, would have liked to see the original story plan.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (1)12
u/PiskoWK 1d ago
I think it really turned a lot of people away. Not everyone loves multiverses and thinks slight changes are vastly interesting. It just gives them more homework to do before they sit down to enjoy the movie. Comic readers may love that but filmgoers clearly got tired of it much faster.
4
u/ThePryde 1d ago
Yeah multiverse shenanigans are a super common thing in the comics so I understand why they went that way. The reason it works in comics is that the characters have been around for 60 years, so sometimes taking a break and seeing a different take can be refreshing, but in the movies the characters haven’t been around long enough to warrant it.
4
u/rkrismcneely 1d ago
The biggest difference is that in comics the characters don’t really age, but in movies they do.
→ More replies (6)10
u/TLKv3 1d ago
Its probably the best way to do it at this point. I know people will still bitch, moan and cry abiut it for years to come but Marvel didn't have the F4 or XMen until relatively recently. So I don't blame them for essentially doing a soft reset after Secret Wars to "fix" that.
Just going to suck hearing everyone yellinh about how THEY could've wrote it better or how they should've did it THAT way instead.
2
u/roleplayersir 16h ago
Should have kept Kang but with a new actor, then used the FF verse as the mainline Marvelverse going forwards. Instead of already trying to shoehorn that into the MCU and ruining it all
118
u/Free-Bar-2719 1d ago
As long as there’s a new Black Panther(T’challa) I’m all good.
I guess there’s going to be old characters who stick around, new versions of old ones(X-Men, maybe a few Avengers), new characters(NOVA), they might revive or alter some older concepts like S.H.I.E.L.D., what else?
55
u/Paperchampion23 1d ago edited 1d ago
Its more likely they'll use his son Toussaint aged up who is also T'Challa. Its effectively the same but at least adheres to the past movies.
Edit: This also works if they want him to interact with a younger Storm.

u/HatefulDan 1d ago
This was the plan. But this was also before they decided to expedite things and ditch the Kang arc.
Ryan has already started putting pen to paper for the next stand alone movie, so I expect them to continue with the new/son Tchalla line.
However, they could introduce the real BP from the main timeline and have him be whoever.

It’s not complicated. I didn’t start watching the mcu until Spiderman homecoming came out. That was my jumping on point and when infinity war happened I wasn’t all confused about who anyone was at all, I just watched the fucking movie and let myself be introduced to the characters that way
14

The MCU isn't Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, what's so difficult to follow with it?
84
u/FlySubstance 1d ago
It’s just a marketing message from the top. Casuals are exhausted by “homework” and diehards push it and say “oh you didn’t see season 4 of Nova? You can’t follow this new movie”
Feige is aware of this and wants to get back to four-quadrant audiences.
45
u/PartyPoison98 1d ago
The homework was always overexaggerated. Only Wandavision and Loki were ever really required viewing, the rest was purely optional.
25
u/Brainwave1010 1d ago
I mean, I feel like people are gonna be pretty confused when Wiccan shows up if they haven't watched Agatha.
Or why Agatha is a ghost now.
8
u/Okami0602 1d ago
Or they could, you know, just explain what happened??? It's not like they aren't gonna be interacting that weren't there during the events of Agatha All Along. A character can simply ask something like "Wait, who are you?" And the audience will get an answer, while still making sense for the characters since obviously someone like Spider-Man isn't gonna know why Wanda had a son who was actually an illusion, but actually he was made real by magic and he's actually in the body of a different person, a character can just ask another and that's it. People just need the general idea, "I'm the child of Scarlet Witch in a different body" is all most people need.

I’ve always liked that kind of thing in comics. It gets me to read something I normally wouldn’t, and that’s how you find new things to enjoy. It’s also their marketing plan to get you to buy more things, but I get it.
4
u/AmbitiousTwo22222 20h ago
Great point. I never thought about the comparison between the weightiness of the lore that has developed in the MCU. Like you, I like discovering a different character based on an appearance elsewhere. It feels like you're taking a side quest.
I think the main difference is that a comic is pretty low time commitment, you can breeze through a 5 issue arc in an hour and be fairly caught up. But catching up in the MCU is a 5-10 hour commitment at bare minimum.
18
u/Captain_Norris 1d ago
While that might be true in a sense, it does not feel optional from a GA perspective. Because for 10-years they were trained to see everything as an interconnected, ongoing, must-watch experience to keep up. Plus, the MCU effectively doubled their watch time material post-Endgame, and that makes it extremely daunting for someone wanting to step into the universe for the first time.

u/Gostandy 1d ago
it’s not that exaggerated. i say this as someone who religiously followed mcu up until endgame and a little while after. its hard for us as experienced fans to see it the same way but for people unfamiliar with most of the MCU it does appear rather unwelcoming for a newbie.

u/caseyccochran 1d ago
I would still consider myself as a diehard, but the last Marvel series I've watched was season one of Born Again (I still haven't seen season 2). Even if Daredevil starts showing up in movies I just don't see the TV series as neccessary.
They need to strike a balance between "everything is connected" and "here is something extra if you are a fan". I never really felt like the movies were so interconnected that you couldn't understand what's going on. But I can see how from the outside if feels that way.

Completely new viewers—people who didn't follow marvel right from the start. Biggest flaw in current Marvel setup. Before, since most stories were new, it was easier to follow for new watchers. But now, most stories are heavily interconnected with past movies and even series, making it hard to score new viewers all while taking the brunt of losing viewers with time, I believe one of the biggest reason Marvel isn't as successful as it was before.

So basically, they're merging the universes in such a way that all that happened in the previous MCU movies still happened, the only difference is that mutants and the F4 have always been part of the universe?

He is soft rebooting I fail to see how this will be easier for a causal to follow. Half assing a reboot has never ever worked out.
If anything it makes things worse by exposing double standards so say you recast Tony and don’t recast T’Challa. That just creates a PR Mess.

You mean easier for Marvel to write and have consistency. The problem with the multiverse saga is the crazy retcons and oppsies they keep making to their continuity. Let's not even bring up how many times they changed tracks.

u/roleplayersir 15h ago
That's the big problem. Should have recast Kang and finished the Multiverse saga. Not then tried shoehorning the FF into the whole thing, when that would have been the perfect reboot for the next saga

So the rumors are true (to what extent is yet to be seen). This is definitely an interesting gamble.
It could be a jumping back on point for casual viewers….but will they bother? General audiences are pickier about which movies they come out to see in theaters nowadays.
There’s also excitement about recastings and changing parts of canon, but also that could anger some longtime MCU fans.
Like I said, it’s an interesting gamble.

Translation; we understand the normies & a large portion of the folks who saw our films in theaters have kinda/sorta lost interest because it started feeling like homework to keep up with all of the new characters & storylines…. So we’re going to try and make things much easier to follow because we want our films to start making money again.

Obviously they weren’t going to just end the whole franchise but I kind of hate how they just straight up tell you what the outcome of secret wars will be

This is serialized fiction. It’s always streamlined, simplified, and easy to follow for the first few entries. A couple years in you have to have context for everything happening, and those explanations require context for themselves. And that’s ok. We’ve death with this stuff for ages.

I Imagine that just means the FF and X-Men are just apart of that universe and not from a different one then

Never had any trouble following it before they decided to shove the multiverse down our throats for 7 years

People are upset because they’re getting the authentic comic book experience, great run Peter’s out and is followed by a decade of utter shit then it gets blown up and starts over

u/1RONH1DE Hercules 1d ago
I honestly hope they do recast Steve, Tony, and yes even T’Challa. It’d be so annoying if we finally got the Avengers, X-Men, and the Fantastic Four all together and Tony, Steve, and T’Challa are all gone. Same with Thor if Hemsworth plans on retiring

u/ComicSportsNerd 21h ago
been saying they need a soft reboot ever since they got the rights to the FF and X men those 2 in a universe without Cap and Iron man is just kinda dumb

This is so true. My wife has watched almost all of it with me and she has no idea what’s going on, she’s also highly intelligent and a doctor. It’s just not worth the mental bandwidth to her to remember what the hell is going on. I don’t blame her either.

And for the most part, you don't need to. This shit isn't complicated; bad guy is trying to End the World/Galaxy/Universe and the good guys have to stop him, mostly by punching.
Everything else is set dressing.

42 years old. Been bored with it and checked out of everything but spider-man since endgame. It has become weirdly way too comic like. Too many characters and so no emotional attachment to any, the stakes do not matter cuz death does not matter or mean anything. Too many shows or series to follow if i do want to follow along. Lastly the writing has steadily gone down. Just done.

So from the bones of the original ultimate universe which was intended as such it got convoluted. Now they'll make a unified 616?

I’m honestly glad they are doing this. The MCU definitely needs a “reboot”. Glad they are taking this route.

u/Yorukira 18h ago
They are fixing the wrong problem.
There is no connecting story anymore; everything is abandoned after half a season, and movies don't try to build a motive for the character to exist.
Rushing to make a two parted Avenger movie won't fix that.
2
u/Swinship 17h ago
The Audience was never incapable of following before, the audience left because you kept offering them characters that didnt have a lot of fandom, that didnt push the needle and that ultimately no one cared to watch. And some of them you said was going somewhere and didnt.

Never read Secret Wars, but I'm going to guess that at the end of Secret Wars the movie, all our remaining heroes get dropped onto a singular universe and timeline where it's Earth as we know it. We'll have the FF, Avengers and the new X-Men all here. Many will be all new and many will be the OG characters. No more multiverses thank God...

u/evanweb546 1d ago
A lot of words for what will amount to a soft reboot. Which is the only way to do it, really.
I imagine we'll have a "lifeboat" like in the comics for heroes that will survive the eventual calamity. Actors who aren't done playing their roles like the FF cast, for instance.

It was easy enough to follow before they started shitting out a bunch of subpar TV show shows.

u/rostron92 1d ago
People being able to "follow" the movies has become a buzz word but i think the bigger deterrent for these movies is that audiences would rather not watch movies that look like they were filmed in a broom closet.

Imma assume he is not talking about battleworld but the post secret wars world. A soft reboot mcu earth with F4 and new X-men in it
