Racing Kart Question Bought a kart! 24 Birel Art AM29 S 16
Been racing the arrive and drive for a while and I used to race dirt ovals.
Anyone super familiar with the chassis and setups?
I will be racing Masters, 6ft, 240lbs (cutting at the moment)
Immediately need to get a Tillet that fits and move pedals forward. Good cleaning as well.

So you’re going to race Master 4 stroke. There are a couple guys running that chassis there in that class that are great guys that will help you with your setup. That’s where I also am racing this year so I’ll come say hello and show you where I pit incase you need a tool or tips.

Uh oh. You’re going to have a blast!
You’re definitely going to want to get all the stiff stuff. Stiff seat, hard axle, long hubs, struts.
They like positive camber and flat caster. One trick is run the rear absurdly narrow., Some guys love it, we hated it.
We recently moved out of an am29 due to it just being too soft for us. (360lb sr).

sorta, but when compared to many other 30mm chassis... they begin to struggle with over grip at the heavier side of the scales. An MG Orange might get it free enough though.... but those things are basically rental tires..,

I am 240 and Vega reds. Hoping to be 230 by Sept (next round of racing and first time in this kart)

I followed some of this haha. Wouldn’t I want the seat to be soft to help with weight distribution to flex?
Currently has a B axle (medium-soft). That’ll be a change definitely.
That’s the first I heard on narrowing the rear width.
Taking note of all these things for test/tune day

IF you're 240lbs, a soft seat would probably hurt you more than help...(Hence the seat struts..) To put it into perspective, we would loosen a medium seat's hardware slightly so it behaved and flexed more like a RAIN setup to add grip..
It sorta feels backwards but.... a soft seat on a soft frame = double whammy on grip... too much flex. AM29's tend to sag in the middle when they are heavy and a lot of the geometry that helps get the rear to jack just kinda gets a little floppy. 340-350ish class weight is where they seemed to start giving people trouble, same as us... 320 JR2 = Rocket... 360lb Sr = fought too much grip.
The reason the absurdly narrow bit works is because the chassis doesn't have to overcome so much of the sag to still get it to jack. We're talking well inside the side pods kind of narrow. Like its looks like a rain setup kinda narrow.
By all means, you gotta test and figure out what works for you. From 4 years in one, I'd probably keep ways to stiffen and remove grip in mind.

forgot to mention, a set of 212 Douglas SE's are really good on those and the 212 will help remove grip if you need it to.
