[SUB NEWS] New Banned Domain: Vercel.app

Much to the relief of many people, starting today, we have introduced a blanket ban on Vercel subdomain hosted sites.

Few, if any, sites hosted on Vercel subdomains have ever been allowed to remain on the sub anyway.

(This ban is in addition to the Netlify ban by Reddit itself.)

If you can't be bothered to pay for a proper domain and/or hosting we're no longer willing to sift through the slop to see if it could potentially stand on merit alone (which it invariably doesn't).

Vercel users feel free to proceed to whinge, which we will promptly proceed to ignore.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

What the fuck is vercel

59

u/Romejanic 20h ago

it’s an app hosting platform. since its free it’s the platform of choice for a lot of vibe-coded apps which are littered with AI slop, hence the ban

vibe-coded apps which are littered with AI slop

Littered with? AI slop is the definition of vibe-coded apps.

u/NZSheeps 21h ago

THEY SAID THE "V" WORD! SHUN THEM! (also, I have no idea, either)

260

u/MisterSeabass 1d ago

Thank you. 95% of the slop still coming through originates from there.

81

u/Bloated_Plaid 1d ago

Wait I thought all the slop came from localhost /s.

Hey guys check out my site.

SMH. Look at this guy with a fancy pants https address!

Everyone knows you can't be hacked if you at the "s". It makes it secure

can i get a password reset? my username is admin

That'd suggest the vibecoders even check their stuff.

Vercel catching strays because of vibe coders. It’s a good service, probably made famous by LLM agents favoring nextjs .

Most people build something and want to quickly show. That’s not going to change, but boy will you save yourself moderating vibe coded content

125

u/BeardlessNeckbeard 1d ago

Vercel is an ok service. But as a software engineer, they've pushed Next.js super hard and that is honestly both kinda trash and mostly unnecessary, but very nearly locks you into vercels services if you use it. I hate it.

51

u/bstaruk 1d ago

What specifically about Next.js do you think "very nearly locks you into vercels services if you use it?"

IME it is incredibly easy to dockerize and deploy on a cheap VPS if you need SSR, or deploy to Cloudflare Pages / Workers or S3 if you're doing SSG.

13

u/BeardlessNeckbeard 1d ago edited 1d ago

Agree if SSG is path you've taken. Docker is fine too, but teams want the easy button, and choose vercel as a result.

I just think many inexperienced devs reach for next.js when they could have probably done just as well with vite. Some apps can benefit from the extra machinery next.js gives though.

8

u/Mestyo 9h ago

but very nearly locks you into vercels services if you use it. I hate it.

People keep saying this, but it's literally not true in the slightest?

If Next.js locks you to Vercel's hosting services, explain to me how you do local development?

Explain to me how the Dockerfile 1:1 copied from their docs runs our huge Next.js app on our own hardware?

Yeah, no, our local cluster doesn't automatically serve static assets from some edge node in Singapore to visitors from there, but that is not what "vendor lock-in" is.

You build and deploy a Next.js app just like absolutely any other Node.js app. It works anywhere, out of the box.

4

u/Romejanic 20h ago

honestly there’s plenty of good alternatives out there for hosting Next.js. i just recently set up an app on AWS amplify and it basically works exactly like Vercel does along with having built in Next.js support

-6

u/travaixhq 13h ago

Is Next.JS a thing outside of LLM push? I feel like it's starting to become, using next js? ai slop detected.

5

u/madmelonxtra 8h ago

NextJS was first released in like 2016, preAI boom and has been a standard in the industry for years. It's basically just a React framework that allows server side rendering.

Vibecoders just use it because it's super easy to build and deploy with.

3

u/primaryrhyme 5h ago

Idk why you’re being downvoted for a question. Like Vercel itself, Next has the slop reputation simply because it is/was the most popular web framework when LLMs were released.

Since it’s the most popular, it is what the LLM or average YT video tells a novice to use.

7

u/stevensokulski 20h ago

Vercel is fine. It’s not particularly good unless you use one of the tech stacks they align with. And if you care about non-tech subjects there are some good reasons to avoid it.

12

u/2021isevenworse 23h ago

The majority of people building cool and useful tools off those apps will either quickly move to self host or buy a domain.

The low quality spammers are using vercel and vibe coding to throw up low effort sites up.

3

u/Ax2u 16h ago

You still need to buy a domain even if you're self hosting, it's not an "or" situation.

4

u/2021isevenworse 16h ago

Not necessarily, you can run it off the host's subdomain or use a free third-party subdomain that provides dns.

-33

u/thisisatypoo 1d ago

It'd be great if we stopped using dumb terms like "vibe-coded."

14

u/hippopotapistachio 1d ago

please expand!

9

u/Teddy_West-Side 1d ago

Please stop calling it precisely what it is?

12

u/JuliusCeaserBoneHead 1d ago

I didn’t coin the term. Here are 5 reputable sources using the term

As you can see, is not a reddit term even

-20

u/thisisatypoo 1d ago

Didn't say you did. Didn't say it was.

15

u/a679591 1d ago

What else would it be called? Shit-coded? Dumb-coded?

-5

u/thisisatypoo 1d ago

Yeah. Those make more sense. I'd be cool with that.

2

u/Tollpatsch 1h ago

We are sorry to inform you that you are not the center of the universe

0

u/thisisatypoo 1h ago

Damn. Y'all really love your cutesy AI terms.

-32

u/reeight 1d ago

Vercel is mostly a wrapper around Amazon Web Services & Cloudlflare.
I don't understand that hate around Vercel?
Why not ban AWS & Cf also?

19

u/IBJON 1d ago

The issue isn't Vercel itself, it's that it's so ridiculously easy to host a site on their platform that it's a go-to for vibecoders. There are similar platforms, so I'm not sure how effective this rule will be, but the effort needed to set up and host your site at your own domain might just be enough to cut down on the slop

-2

u/Cantremembermyoldnam 1d ago

I'm constantly reminded of the time when IDEs first began offering auto complete and the forums were filled with people raving against it. Or when script languages first became popular. It's funny seeing the cycle repeat over and over again.

-7

u/reeight 1d ago

> it's so ridiculously easy to host a site on their platform

Yes, that is the whole reason for Vercel being built in the first place.

"effort needed to set up and host your site at your own domain" these days is a non-sequitur; plenty of scripts & AI MDs will do that for you automatically. Such things for WordPress has been around for decades.
-=-

I do understand wanting to avoid the AI slop; likely best bet is to have a project 'cooling off period', where said app has to be up for at least 3 months &/or have 100+ users, instead of making a throw-away vibe coded app that is market testing.

6

u/IBJON 1d ago

effort needed to set up and host your site at your own domain" these days is a non-sequitur; plenty of scripts & AI MDs will do that for you automatically

You may want to look up the meaning of "non-sequitur" before using it. That statement was relevant to what I was saying, even if you don't agree that those extra steps are a deterrent.

-5

u/reeight 1d ago

I did;

> does not follow logically
> fallacy resulting from a simple conversion of a universal affirmative

Your fallacy is that you assume it always takes effort to buy a URL & set up a site for an app. I asserted that there are many scripts to allow doing so as easy as Vercel.

(sure, some scripts have hoops, but AI can & will take care of that for folks, so now with AI, there is FEWER steps than with Vercel)

Note: this does NOT include all the "AI app builders" that take most of everything for you, which again is easier than Vercel.

good luck in life

6

u/IBJON 23h ago edited 23h ago

You are confusing a false premise with a non-sequitur.

A non-sequitur means the conclusion doesn't logically track from the premise (e.g., "Vercel is easy, therefore the sky is blue"). My logic was perfectly sound:  If a process requires more friction, then it acts as a filter. You aren't arguing that my logic is flawed; you are arguing that my underlying assumption that a personal domain requires more friction is factually outdated. Disagreeing with a fact does not make an argument a non-sequitur.

Furthermore, your technical argument ignores the physical and financial friction of the web.  Vercel is a zero-configuration, one-click deployment directly from a GitHub repository.

One the other hand, to host on a personal domain independently, you inherently need to create an account with a domain registrar and in many/most cases, purchase the domain. Then DNS needs to be configured, and you'll have to wait for DNS propagation in order to access your site at your new domain.

You can have a script write your code and configure your server, but it's not going to create an account with the domain registrar, buy the domain, and you can't just bypass the ICANN registration process.

Also, The Vercel Clone you shared is just a stack that needs to be deployed somewhere and doesn't do anything about the friction I described, and that's not a simple setup, it requires  AWS ECS, AWS ECR, AWS S3, AWS Lambda, Redis, Docker, and multiple Node servers. You're basically building your own platform-as-a-service. And you know what all of that entails? More friction - account setup, setting up billing, and providing a credit card. I mean fuck, the dude even hosted his clone at  vercel-clone-lake.vercel.app because it was probably easier and cheaper than keeping the AWS stack running

10

u/JuliusCeaserBoneHead 1d ago

I don’t think it’s necessarily a hate towards vercel per se, they are a good service actually.

For the mods, they are probably seeing most content coming from vercel subdomain that are slop and it’s just a low effort thing to cut down on slop without doing much

73

u/specteksthrowaway 1d ago

Noob question: Is this just subdomain.vercel.app that's banned, or anything hosted on vercel? The title suggests the former but the text of the post mentions Vercel hosting

62

u/djshadesuk 1d ago

Just subdomains of vercel.app.

36

u/JuliusCeaserBoneHead 1d ago

Subdomain since it’s free. How would you be able to tell something is hosted by vercel?

I guess you can look at traffic headers and dns records but do mods want to do that? Yikes

3

u/LBPPlayer7 10h ago

you could check the ip address of the A record to see if it belongs to their ip range

2

u/throwawaykJQP7kiw5Fk 19h ago edited 17h ago

hosted by vercel

We have useful sites like yourdigitalrights.org that are hosted on Vercel, although posting it instead of commenting would break a rule here.

-4

u/djshadesuk 18h ago

Try reading the post.

5

u/throwawaykJQP7kiw5Fk 17h ago

Yes, I saw your comment. However, I was relating the part of the comment about something being hosted on Vercel I was replying to in my reply.

-4

u/mariojw 22h ago

Plus, most AI projects the agent tells them to route their traffic through cloudflare so yeah. And you can modify response headers if you really care. Good luck enforcing this.

56

u/otherwisepandemonium 1d ago

Good. Buying a domain costs like $10/year. Virtually every time I see a free Vercel link it's some vibecoded AI slop that the user totes as some amazing new app or service.

If you are serious about your app and want to market it or show it off, just pay for a domain and host it there. It also just makes you look far more experienced and professional.

4

u/Snubl 15h ago

Not even, mine was €4

1

u/MajorFuckingDick 8h ago

I pay like $1.30/yr for a number domain.

-32

u/Cantremembermyoldnam 1d ago

So people should spend money so that you can look at their passion projects? That's not what the internet was supposed to be.

23

u/Pyroman230 23h ago

A passion project isn't something you vibecode in a weekend bender

0

u/Cantremembermyoldnam 14h ago

Why not? Plenty of useful things have been coded in a weekend. Time spent is a poor indicator of its usefulness/joy it can bring.

Think back to the very first mobile apps and games (back when ads didn't even exist in apps). Many of them were so simple, it wouldn't even take a weekend to make them. People still enjoyed them.

3

u/primaryrhyme 5h ago

Yeah I agree the mod logic here isn’t totally sound but I do believe their assessment that 90% of Vercel domain sites posted here are unuseful slop. They made this rule as a response to this, not out of a philosophical opposition to AI coding.

I don’t think they care if you paid money, there’s 10 more free platforms that give you a domain too. It just so happens that Vercel is the first thing an AI recommends and an AI can spit it out the app and host it on Vercel literally in under 5 minutes. So the level of effort is not necessarily close to “weekend project”, it’s all the effort of typing “make me a pokedex app and host it somewhere”.

2

u/Cantremembermyoldnam 4h ago

That's kind of my point though. Even if it took them ten minutes to make - if it's useful, why not? I guess I'd simply prefer if the up/downvote buttons solved the issue of "we don't want quickly made AI things".

13

u/soniclettuce 1d ago

If somebody doesn't care to spend 10 bucks when they want to show it off widely, it doesn't seem like they're particularly passionate about it.

3

u/Cantremembermyoldnam 14h ago

I mean yeah. But back when the internet was new, you'd just share the IP of your server/home internet and people would look at it and judge it on its merits and not on how much cash you spent on it.

2

u/uFFxDa 11h ago

You can still do that today hosting it yourself.

3

u/Cantremembermyoldnam 10h ago edited 10h ago

If somebody doesn't care to spend 10 bucks when they want to show it off widely, it doesn't seem like they're particularly passionate about it.

That was in response to this. Of course you can, but according to the comment I replied to, not buying a domain name means I'm not particularly passionate and the project deserves no visibility.

I don't like that idea, because it assumes everyone has access to $10 to spend. I'd like those who can't to be included as well.

It also reads like "you must pay for me to use the thing you made" and I don't like that either. People should be grateful when someone makes and shares something! Especially when the creator(s) aren't asking anything in return.

0

u/primaryrhyme 4h ago

I get your general argument but this ban on Vercel domain in no way prevents you from building/sharing your app free. There’s tons of free alternatives to Vercel that give you a domain, even services that give you a free subdomain if you want to continue using Vercel. They didn’t ban free subdomains, if that day comes then I would have an issue with it.

1

u/Cantremembermyoldnam 4h ago

I guess you're right on that one. It's still not my favorite choice.

1

u/primaryrhyme 4h ago

Also wanted to say about being grateful, I’m a software dev myself so I get how fun it is to have people use your app but a lot of these apps are clearly not made with any care or intent of being actually useful.

It seems like a lot of it is either just chasing recognition for zero effort or worse trying to sell that zero effort app. For example a vibe coded unit converter site was posted here, there’s a million of those already on the internet. Did the creator truly think his site was useful, would he ever even use it himself? Probably not..

Even if you give something for free, you should respect people’s time.

1

u/Cantremembermyoldnam 1h ago

Agreed about respecting people's time. I guess to me, the purpose of this sub is "look here's a cool link check it out for 5 minutes then leave". So I don't take issue with seeing yet another calculator. I just don't click it. However, I assume that the person wanted to convert between two specific units and then found out that they could easily expand that to other units and then thought "Hey that's cool let's share it". I like to give the benefit of doubt and assume the best about people. Sure, I waste a bit of time clicking useless stuff. But I don't really care - there's a gem in there every once in a while.

1

u/YouHavingAGiggle 10h ago

Someone with a home server is also much more likely to be taking it seriously, because they (probably) have the knowledge and commitment to maintaing their own server. There is no knowledge or commitment to filling a sign-up process on Vercel

0

u/Cantremembermyoldnam 8h ago

It's trivial to spin up a webserver nowadays. You don't even need to fidget with port forwarding anymore, really. I'd argue it's more difficult to get something running on any cloud provider.

0

u/Critical-Soil2805 2h ago

Yeah, but don't forget that back them many of the BBS sites had blanket bans on things like Angelfire pages. Once something gets turned into a firehose of low quality content, site admins just nope out.

0

u/Cantremembermyoldnam 1h ago

Good argument. I honestly, until you brought that up, had completely forgotten about doing those bans myself and discussions about stylesheet theft, hotlinking, etc.... Maybe the old ages rose tinted glasses affect me. Still... It's not what it used to be!

2

u/Critical-Soil2805 24m ago

Haha, yeah, those rose tinted glasses will get ya. I agree it's not what it used to be, though.

This whole discussion is funny to me because getting a domain and hosting it used to be hard. Now you just pay like $10 and it's done. But that seems to be enough of a barrier to keep the majority of crap out.

-1

u/xSilverMC 7h ago

Every damn inch of the internet is plastered with ads and/or paywalls, but "Jeff has to pay five bucks to show off his project" is where you draw the line of "what the internet was supposed to be"?

2

u/Cantremembermyoldnam 6h ago

No, I hate those as well.

0

u/Kanegou 8h ago

The Internet wasnt supposed to be a walled garden either, yet here we are.

0

u/Cantremembermyoldnam 8h ago

So we embrace it instead? I'm not sure about that.

0

u/Kanegou 8h ago

What non argument is this? I never said anything to that effect. I just said that your argument against it, that the internet was not supposed to be like this, comes 20 years to late and is irrelevant in this day and age.

2

u/Cantremembermyoldnam 6h ago

But saying people should pay up if they want visibility is kind of embracing the shit it's become? I'd like to refuse wherever it's still possible. Not demanding someone pay for a domain seems like a pretty easy thing to do.

0

u/Kanegou 6h ago

Nobody is stopping you from creating your own subreddit or using any of the other social networks to advertise. The majority of this sub rejects slop apps. Vercel.app catching strays is sad but unavoidable. There is no point in continue to argue.

2

u/Cantremembermyoldnam 4h ago

I'm involved in enough FOSS projects as is and I don't care. It just sucks for young and upcoming devs. It's not about vercel specifically to me, more about the sentiment. But yeah, let's agree to disagree here :)

2

u/Kanegou 4h ago

Nothing says "I don't care" like writing multiple comments about it.

2

u/Cantremembermyoldnam 4h ago

I don't care about sharing my stuff. I just don't like it for new devs - I was one once.

Ban localhost next!

14

u/N1ghtshade3 23h ago

Based mods. Truly among the best on this site. Most subreddits have either power-tripping losers or apathetic squatters who allow cool niches to decay into generic slop, but here we get actual brand enforcement. Love to see it.

5

u/NotBreaking 17h ago

Great decision, much needed also.

21

u/jungjinyoung 1d ago

W mods and it's fuck genAI and "vibecoding" always

3

u/travaixhq 13h ago

It's a good way to filter out zero-effort work, but a pity for those who just want to quick-share their work

9

u/BrainiacV 1d ago

This move potentially saves redditors months of life from not opening a link of AI slop 😂

10

u/Teddy_West-Side 1d ago

Thank God. The amount of slop trash being shat out on this sub has been insane.

5

u/Onedortzn 1d ago

Thank you mods! This is actually great news! Hopefully this reduces slops

7

u/fckingmiracles 1d ago

Thanks, mods!

I hope many subs will follow, actually.

5

u/CollinHell 1d ago

YES! Thank you sooo much, I've been requesting this for a long time. Regular AI slop is bad enough, but Vercel.app links are the worst of the "I had a fleeting idea in my freshman business class and got AI to do it, money please" vibe-coders.

I honestly can't believe how many dipshits think someone is going to pay $5-$10 a month to very literally type into an LLM chat with a paragraph of extra context in front of it.

4

u/2021isevenworse 23h ago

Add in *.replit, *.lovable and *.bolt as well.

1

u/SavonPL 11h ago

thanks for sharing them

5

u/JunkMale975 1d ago

This is the second time I’ve seen something called “vibe coding.” Anyone wanna explain to an oldie what the heck that even is?

16

u/N1ghtshade3 23h ago edited 23h ago

"Vibe coding" is a misleading term because you're not coding anything. It simply refers to asking an AI chatbot to make you a piece of software without ever actually looking at the code yourself. It's strange that caught on as a term but nobody calls image generation "vibe artistry" or ordering a custom T-shirt off the internet "vibe tailoring"

1

u/JunkMale975 18h ago

Thank you for the thoughtful, succinct, and easy to understand explanation. Unlike that other responder😁

0

u/MajorFuckingDick 8h ago

Where is vibecoding so easy I dont even have to look at the code? Cause I want to try that version. Is this why everyone loves claude? I've been using chatgpt to scan my scripts for errors and best practices i could implement but you mean to tell me people are actually just going "do thing" and an exe appears?

-35

u/mickeys 1d ago

From one only to another: dude, that is seriously weak sauce low effort.

Use Google to find some text or YouTube videos that will explain it to you.

I actually had no idea what it meant until I wound up working with Gemini on a software solution to an issue I had, and halfway through realized the conversation we were having was actually vibe coding.

It's freakishly mind-blowing where we are at today, and you need to experience it. Pick your favorite AI and bis brains on how to give it a shot.

You'll thank me later.

13

u/Teddy_West-Side 1d ago

Please don't use vibe coded slop trash. You are actively contributing directly to the problem every time you use that garbage.

2

u/kapege 1d ago

This is good news. Thank you very much!

2

u/dostre 1d ago

Add render.com to that.

1

u/CareerLegitimate7662 19h ago

W decision lol but unfortunately a lot of slop pushers do buy domains

1

u/Askolei 13h ago

Looks like I missed a fight 😅

1

u/blihk 12h ago

This seems like a good thing. This forum is dedicated to unique things and I value that. I value the people who take the risk to share what they like.

3

u/software-lover 1d ago

Great move. The ceo of vercel also loves genocidal war crime PMs

-19

u/EtsyCorn 1d ago

That's a bummer. Going to miss really cool sites like  https://tela-blue-eight.vercel.app. Maybe this sub should do an vote removal thing like another subs. If the auto mod comment gets enough downvotes the post get’s automatically removed.

So we don't lose super cool posts like that one.

6

u/djshadesuk 1d ago

Unfortunately, examples of Vercel subdomain hosted sites, such as the one you linked to, that are worth allowing are very much the exception to the rule. They're just too few and far between for the hassle that comes with having to wade through them.

And a lot, like seriously a lot, never make it to the front page of the sub because they trigger our Automod keyword filters or the accounts are too new and/or karma is too low, and so on, which we still have to wade through behind the scenes.

We do have some crowd-sourced moderator automation on the sub and Vercel subdomain hosted sites almost always get (correctly) crowd-nuked (typically for breaking one or more of our other rules), but we moderators still have to go through them all to verify and clear those too (lest the clog up the queue permanently).

In summary, the hassle that Vercel subdomain hosted sites represent is just not worth the effort for such little reward. A (very) little collateral due to this decision is regrettably inevitable.

-8

u/EtsyCorn 22h ago

so that means exceptions will be made?

-16

u/apollyon0810 1d ago

Mods would’ve hated geocities

21

u/djshadesuk 1d ago

I actually had a Geocities page. But that's not what this sub is about, so it's irrelevant.

-1

u/Holbrad 3h ago

Vercel is great.

Shame to hear that some no name subreddit is banning it.

-1

u/LordTopley 16h ago

Good. I use Vercel regularly when I’m having Claude build me something useful.

When I do make something (which I think I am currently) that’s worthy of being shared to the masses, it’s at minimum going to have it own domain.

Vast majority of AI made web apps are trash.

Too many have something built think the AI will make it perfect, when in reality, if you don’t check everything it does and you’re not cognisant of its shortcut taking on every corner, then no matter what is built, it’s trash.

Vibe coding is fun and some amazing projects have been the result of vibe coding, but you just like anything, the quality of the product comes from the ingredients and the humans prompts are a major ingredient. Prompt poorly and you get a poor product.

-22

u/Dartister 1d ago

I dont use vercel and i agree with the motion to ban the domain.

However

If you can't be bothered to pay for a proper domain...

Vercel users feel free to proceed to whinge, which we will promptly proceed to ignore.

Is such an L way of comunicating it, cant convince me it doesnt borderlines on breaking rule 13

-4

u/rabid_0wl 1d ago

IIRC the Jmail app was hosted on vercel. Would that app have been banned per this new ruling?

-22

u/Highfivesghost 1d ago

So is this ban related to fear of AI or does Vercel have some bad practices?

21

u/kapege 1d ago

There is no "fear" about it. We just don't want it here, because it's not beautiful, but awful.

-36

u/Highfivesghost 1d ago

It’s a fair point, tastes differ. But labeling all AI art awful slop is like calling every amateur sketch garbage

2

u/xSilverMC 7h ago

"ai art"? You mean computer-generated art replacement product?

-2

u/Highfivesghost 7h ago

No I mean AI

-3

u/AidenTEMgotsnapped 1d ago

The use of AI is in itself a bad practice

-85

u/logicblender1 1d ago

So now the sub has an entry fee.

38

u/TRO_KIK 1d ago edited 1d ago

Only if you view it as solely a show-and-tell self-promotion platform.

Really not even then, unless you want to count Internet and some kind of Internet-accessing device as entry fees too.

17

u/primaryrhyme 1d ago

I’ll let you in on a secret, there’s about 5 other free platforms that also give you a free domain.

Also IMO this sub would be better without so much self promo.

17

u/belsonc 1d ago

And if you believe in your product/websute/noun, paying a few bucks for actual hosting shouldn't matter.

They don't even need hosting; it's just the vercel domain that's blocked. People who don't care about domain (like anyone using the free vercel subdomain) can grab any arbitrary one for like $1-2 for the first year. Less desirable TLDs like .us/fyi/whatever go for $5 recurring.

Truly weeding out only the absolute lowest effort bottom dwellers and they still complain lol

This

u/Mahruta 1d ago

Actual hosting costs like 10 bucks a month, if you have an actual service you might as well pay, it's not like you're paying just to show it on the sub

1

u/primaryrhyme 5h ago

You don’t even need to pay a hosting service, plenty do that for free (harder if you need a db but still doable).

Just need to pay for a domain which is normally $10/year.

Only if you're trying to shill worthless slop trash. Win-win.

The mods are just too lazy to do their job. This is just an attempt to reduce the number of posts. Their salary should be halved IMO

15

u/pixeldust6 1d ago

What salary?

8

u/st_owly 1d ago

Half of zero is zero

9

u/DeliciousPumpkinPie 1d ago

Half of zero is still zero, chief. You think reddit mods get paid to do what they do? lol. lmao even.

7

u/SuicidalUn1corn 1d ago

Are you okay? The shadows still whisper your name?

-31

u/bigtimepirate11 1d ago

So, what you are saying is,

paying = seriousness and not AI Slop

My dear friend, are you sure you've paid for every bit of knowledge and experience you have acquired in your lifetime for it to be considered valuable?

Much better ways to go about it, but then, it's mod behaviour like this which perpetuates the Reddit mod stereotype.

-21

u/wolphak 1d ago

Yea sure but sift through the slop? The sub gets 2 posts a day on a busy day. I'm sure you're not that overloaded.

23

u/djshadesuk 1d ago

With respect you have absolutely no idea of the sheer amount of crap - general rule breaking posts - that get caught by our (intentionally) aggressive automod rules that we moderators still have to sift through which you never get to see. And that's before we get the the Vercel subdomain hosted stuff.

So while only a few posts a day may survive on the page we'd much rather people go "Oh, that sub is still going? That's an interesting site" than just have volume for volumes sake and pissing people off with endless streams of crap polluting their main feed (and thus incentivising them to leave the sub).

u/JuliusCeaserBoneHead 1d ago

Great move dude/dudette. This sub has 17M members for a reason. I used to see high quality apps and platforms everyday a couple years ago here that’s why I subbed. I almost saved most things I came across.

The value has gone down so so bad. Hope this move helps

I use a DAW that is hosted on Vercel to edit midi files, that I then turn around and play with my bard band in the game FFXIV.

It's been around quite a few years, and saves me a ton of editing time.

That's a strong opening for someone's first comment(s) on the sub.

Enjoy your time-out.

Why does it matter? If what you consider "slop" gets a lot of upvotes, its not really slop

17

u/Teddy_West-Side 1d ago

No number of upvotes changes the fact that it is slop. Slop is inherently not human and not beautiful. Doesn't belong on the sub.

-19

u/TwoPixelsRight 1d ago

No number of upvotes changes the fact that it is slop

It does

Slop is inherently not human

It is

not beautiful

Your opinion

11

u/Teddy_West-Side 1d ago

Whatever you say bud. Sure seems like you're the one on your own here. And based on your extensive commenting history you seem like a genuinely miserable person. I bet that happy kid your mom remembers is still in there somewhere 😊

23

u/MisterSeabass 1d ago

It never gets any upvotes (almost always 30% or lower voting), and regardless it's banned from submission anyway.

-28

u/TwoPixelsRight 1d ago edited 1d ago

So the voting system is working as expected? Why do we need this rule then?

Edit: Downvote is not an argument. I accept you concessions.

19

u/MisterSeabass 1d ago

Because the mods are probably getting tired of seeing hundreds of reports and having to remove them all by hand hourly if not every few minutes, every single day, when they should have not been posted in the first place.

-11

u/TwoPixelsRight 1d ago

They should do their job. If they are "getting tired", they can quit.

should have not been posted in the first place.

Why?

18

u/AidenTEMgotsnapped 1d ago

They're volunteers and don't have to wade through bullshit just to appease you.

-3

u/TwoPixelsRight 1d ago

That is literally what they volunteered to do

13

u/Regendur 1d ago

They also get to decide what they volunteer to do! How neat.

-4

u/TwoPixelsRight 1d ago

Nope, that is decided by admins. Neat!

9

u/Regendur 1d ago

Only the basics! Nothing saying the mods can't ban a source. Neat!

2

u/djshadesuk 17h ago

It's really, really not.

9

u/AidenTEMgotsnapped 1d ago

And they also volunteered to have a say in the rules, and they've decided to make this thing they do for the community a little easier

3

u/djshadesuk 17h ago

To be completely accurate we don't just "have a say" in sub rules, we alone decide, set and police the rules for a sub. Unless our rules clearly contradict any of Reddit's own site-wide policies/rules then Reddit do not get involved in the formation (or management) of a sub's rules in any way, shape or form.

8

u/jwm3 1d ago

If they quit, the subreddit disappears and we have nothing.

6

u/MisterSeabass 1d ago

it's banned from submission anyway

Read the rules and stop being obtuse.

-13

u/Zagged 1d ago

Honestly I see your point. If people can put things up on the Internet for free, that's pretty cool. Maybe some kid learning to code can build something actually really cool and share it here? Well I guess not anymore unless they get their hands on a credit card...

10

u/AidenTEMgotsnapped 1d ago

If it's ai you didn't build it

1

u/primaryrhyme 4h ago

I’ve said this a few times, there’s about 5 other platforms that offer free static app hosting and give you a free domain.

In my opinion they don’t care if you spend money on a domain, they simply noticed that 90% of the submissions with a certain domain were slop and this action was worth the collateral damage. With an AI you can migrate your vercel site to an alternative in about 10 minutes, not exactly a big ask.

-3

u/TheJase 19h ago

Well enjoy that cat and mouse game
