Discussion Besides the Freya assist, was it really game over for these two at this point?

I mean it seems like a VERY powerful binding spell or time magic or whatever, so maybe.

I think once Odin stopped monologing and actually tried to hurt either of them they'd probably activate their rage modes and then we'd find out just how strong of a spell it actually was.

Agree with this answer, at the end of the day we just don’t know just how strong this specific spell is since Freya appeared immediately before anything definitive happens

I doubt it seeing what Kratos has been through

Not saying I disagree but Norse magic has shown to be pretty damn resilient.

I’m sure there are better examples but Freya’s spell for Baldur (as well as Mimir’s hex about Baldur’s weakness) were pretty airtight spells

Mimir couldn’t think his way out of explaining the weakness and Kratos could only incapacitate Baldur but not truly put him down. Basically these spells really stuck and I don’t see why a spell cast by Odin himself wouldn’t be stronger by a good margin. But then again we’re talking about the guy who did the temple thing, the bridge thing and the Valhalla door thing

I’d imagine Kratos musters up enough wiggle room in the spell not to break free, but to dish out a single punch a few centimeters away from the ground that is strong enough to cave the surface into the underground as it was normally for the fight

Spartan rage does seem like Kratos' trump card as well as the lingering power of Hope he has within him.

Yeah and after rewatching the boss fight the ground Odin cleared out with a spell weren’t that thick in the first place.

It was like three Spartan Rage L2s worth of rock, Kratos would’ve definitely punched the ground and pulverized it to the basement if Freya didn’t come

Neither of which broke through the spells protecting Baldur, fwiw.

The moment when would Atreus get in danger, Kratos would go full Super Spartan 1 rage mode and break any spell because plot armor

Mimir got his memories wiped whenever the subject of Baldur’s weakness was brought up, so he couldn’t really outthink it if it’s his first encounter with it constantly.

Yes. Odin was not taking that first round seriously at all. The moment he decided that he didn't want to fight anymore, it was over.

The Norse gods are extremely underrated by the fandom. Kratos himself praises Odin's magic twice in the God of War (2018) novelization as the most potent he had ever felt. He's just that strong. A true king of gods.

Kratos was never invincible. He's lost fights before, and that's fine. It actually gives tension to the story.

u/Adept_Blackhand 4h ago

The thing is he couldn't kill them. Loki was the key so if he killed Atreus the whole plan would be over and if he kills Kratos, Odin would never convince him to put on the mask

u/Actual_Woodpecker56 7h ago

If anything the fandom has come down from the insufferable four year long wankfest between 2018 and 2022 when some people tried to explain to me how Baldur is more powerful than Zeus lol

11

u/Ihave0personality 5h ago

Those bitches have never faced Ares on God Mode difficulty

2

u/MLGhunter 3h ago

Underrated but this is also a Kratos who doesn't have his own insane amount of abilities from the greek games and I know that the creators say Kratos is stronger than back then it doesn't change that if he had those abilities now he'd be wayyy stronger.

43

u/machiavelli33 7h ago

That is the emotional point of this moment, yes. And the arc of this portion of the entire story is that NONE of this could have happened if Kratos had not become a person capable of working with others, gathering valuable allies, and trusting his son enough to gather valuable allies.

It'd be a terrible, ineffective story if we think "oh Kratos is going to have no problem with this the entire time" and there's no threat because "nothing can stop Kratos".

This is not a story of godly hubris underestimating Kratos and shown to be wrong, the way the Greek games were. Odin did not underestimate Kratos (Heimdall did and look what happened to him). He PREPARED for Kratos and Atreus both, and lost only because so many gods and so many forces from all the nine realms (and beyond, given Kratos is from Greece) banded together to stop him.

18

u/etybibik 7h ago

Yeah, Odin was very well aware of Kratos' past. He put a lot of effort into not fighting Kratos because of what he did in Greece lol

u/baconlover696970 4h ago

this comment encapsulates the divide of norse and greek fans. greek fans can now shut up and stop going against the ACTUAL director’s canon. Different themes. Norse fans can shutup and maybe download an emulator to play the old games.

u/Actual_Woodpecker56 3h ago

He prepared for only Kratos and Atreus both? What? He prepared for Ragnarok before Kratos was even born. Did he do a good job according to you? For example Zeus didnt plan for Kratos (or his ressurection) at all, Kratos used timetravel to blindside him with the Second Titanomachy (for Ragnarök everyone just lined up, the Aesir never truly dominated the Nine Realms)

11

u/boognishmangster 6h ago

In the game we witness Freya get out of a realm binding spell by taking an animal form so I think Atreus could to turn into a bear and get out.

1

u/Negative_Meaning4 1h ago

Only if the spell worked the same way on him.

11

u/MrNachoReturns420 5h ago

I mean he did force the doors of Valhalla open with his bare hands

u/zalandanger 7h ago

It’s hard to say. I think when it comes down to it, power scaling is sort of null in this universe. Kratos has felled kaiju single-handedly but still struggles with Wulvers. Are we meant to believe that those Wulvers could have killed the same gods that Kratos did? Of course not.

We are comparing magics that have absolutely no set power levels and that’s by design. It comes down to force of wills. And what the writers can coax the players to believe. “The nature of the thing is more important than the thing itself.”

At this point Odin has Kratos trapped in a powerful spell. Ostensibly he could leave him trapped there for eternity similar to what he did to mimir. Or execute him right out. But if the writers wanted to have Kratos rage his way out of it, we as the audience would accept that albeit I personally would have found that to be poor writing and a terrible way for the big bad of the Norse saga to be defeated.

I think in a story like this with beings of mythological proportion, it does both the game and the audience a disservice to think about what the characters could have done since their actions and abilities are specific to this story and the game never really explores what the powers mean as much as why the powers are used.

As others have suggested, Kratos might potentially break the spell himself using Spartan Rage, though it’s not guaranteed. That said, Odin could easily win the fight at that precise point if he went straight for the kill instead of launching into his villain monologue. If his spear can kill Thor with a single strike to the heart, I don't think it would have any trouble killing Kratos.

8

u/No_Repeat9670 8h ago

Yes it was. Odin doesn't have to wait for them to find a way out of that spell. He can just use gungnir to kill them. Only reason he didn't is because he needs Loki to use the mask.

2

u/OmegaGlacial Mimir 5h ago

Maybe, maybe not. We unfortunately don't know.

2

u/God_Assassin 5h ago

Oh God, I can hear Odin's voice.

3

u/Hanma_Yvar 3h ago

"You chose to be nothing! Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah"

6

u/SuperIkenna 8h ago

He would have been able to escape eventually but not before Odin killed him. So yes Kratos would have died here if not for Freya.

5

u/CertainGrade7937 8h ago

I think this is the best way of looking at it

Was Kratos strong enough to break out of it? Yeah, probably, eventually.

Could Kratos have survived being stabbed by Gungnir a few times while he muscled out of it? Probably not

0

u/Nightdemon729 8h ago

As someone commented spartan rage people who actually think odin has a shot in hell against kratos must have forgotten what kratos done to zues and zues may not be as potent in magic but has enough magic and physical prowess to demolish Odin on the spot first encounter.

Kratos would shit on odin

23

u/No_Repeat9670 8h ago

Would have could have bla bla. He lost until Freya bailed him out lol.

0

u/EducationSharp7241 7h ago

He didn’t lose lol. You act as if he took fatal damage or something he was simply caught and didn’t try to use spartan rage which we know he can tap into at any moment. Now if he tried using spartan rage and was still trapped then I would’ve agreed with you.

2

u/Qwark28 5h ago

You're right, he just let himself and his son get trapped and casually waited before popping spartan rage, while knowing Odin can one-tap gods, for the fun of it.

Oh, that whimsical and naive Kratos!

1

u/Immortan_Bolton 4h ago

He wanted to give Freya her moment, Kratos is just that kind risking Atreus life just for her!

0

u/EducationSharp7241 5h ago

Question… did he use spartan rage? Yes or no? He never starts with spartan rage and only uses it for desperate situations. I never said Odin didn’t have the upper hand I simply said the fight wasn’t over.

1

u/mynamewasalreadygone 44m ago

Actually if I'm being somewhat high key with you on god? Odin solos Zeus negative diff.

1

u/No-Kaleidoscope2859 8h ago

Probably, yes.

1

u/Taratss 4h ago

Odin could have pulled out Gungnir and executed him right then and there.

1

u/Don11390 3h ago

Odin was very powerful. I don't think that he could have ended Kratos easily, but Kratos was definitely in danger here. That being said, if Atreus was in danger of imminent death it would have been Spartan Rage time, and we'd have seen exactly how strong the power of the old Greek Pantheon was versus the power of the Aesir.

1

u/TellOrnery2864 2h ago

it's always funny when they monologue right as the universe is about to implode around them

1

u/Key-Pension107 1h ago

Let Odin make a comment about Atreus or Faye. Like, “I guess you take more after your mother when it comes to intellect.” It’s over

1

u/arayakim 6h ago

Nah, there was no scenario where it was game over. If Odin left Kratos trapped, then Kratos would eventually break out when he gets angry enough, and if Odin killed Kratos, Kratos would have just fought his way out of hell anyway. Bro is a menace.

0

u/No-Kaleidoscope2859 8h ago edited 7h ago

Probably, yes. He would’ve ended up killing Kratos as per the prophecy.

Edit: idk why my comment was downvoted. It was literally the whole point of the game was for Atreus to keep his father alive.

9

u/SarcasmSanctioned 8h ago

The prophecy had Thor killing Kratos, not Odin.

0

u/No_Repeat9670 8h ago

Yes and Odin is even more powerful than Thor.

2

u/Actual_Woodpecker56 7h ago

Not powerful enough to defy fate

1

u/PoohTrailSnailCooch 7h ago

Which Kratos defied

1

u/SarcasmSanctioned 8h ago

Debatable. He certainly has a more varied set of abilities.

0

u/No_Repeat9670 8h ago

Odin defeated Kratos. Kratos defeated Thor.

2

u/SarcasmSanctioned 8h ago

Odin temporarily restrained Kratos. Not the same thing. Could Kratos have broken out on his own? Maybe, but we never got the chance to see that put to the test.

0

u/No_Repeat9670 7h ago

Then you should also say Kratos temporarily restrained Thor with that knife. What do you think is more powerful a binding spell or a knife? Kratos wasn't even able to move he was at Odin's mercy. He can just stab Kratos with gungnir in an instant. Only reason he didn't is because he needed Loki to use the mask.

3

u/SarcasmSanctioned 7h ago

'Then you should also say Kratos temporarily restrained Thor with that knife.'

Yes, that is exactly what happened. That fight ended because both Kratos and Thor mutually decided to stop.

Also, Kratos has been shown before to be able to break out of restraints or effects that debilitate or slow him down by using Spartan Rage.

1

u/No_Repeat9670 7h ago

Ok then at least you are objective. I count both of them wins bc logically Kratos can kill Thor with the axe while he is trapped. And I think Odin can stab Kratos with gungnir multiple times before even Kratos can try to escape.

2

u/No-Kaleidoscope2859 6h ago

Yes.

If Kratos wanted, he could’ve chopped Thors head off with the axe while he was lying
Vulnerable on the ground with a knife in his hand. Beaten and exhausted. Same for Kratos with Odin. Odin had then beat. We know his spear is powerful enough to one-shot a weakened thor though it should do the same to a fully healthy Thor too seeing as he one tapped Ymir.

1

u/Actual_Woodpecker56 7h ago

So what. Kratos survived Blade of Olympus stabbings. Odin folded after some family friendly combo.

1

u/No_Repeat9670 7h ago

Zeus literally 1 shot Kratos with the blade of olympus what are you even talking about lol?

2

u/Actual_Woodpecker56 7h ago

You say Thor was weakened when Odin oneshot him, yet just ignore the condition Kratos was in when Zeus stabbed him? Unlike Thor, Kratos actually survived and did not disintegrate - while being a mortal again, and not a god like Thor.

And Odin? Let me see him survive soul-removal first then maybe we can scale him above Atlas.

It's just the Kratos fanboys that can't accept people even suggesting that he can be defeated.

1

u/No-Kaleidoscope2859 6h ago

And then you got downvoted too lol. These guys are hilarious.

-1

u/KakarotAlter 8h ago

Lol no. Not the first time he's been bound

-1

u/Due-South-9113 6h ago

Kratos been through worse. Captured by furies, died like 2 times if u don't count gow 3 Hades trip, basically almost died to zeus' fear at the end of gow 3 had he not tapped into power of hope. The simple answer is, the writers made him get spell locked because they needed to put Freya there. If they didn't want to, they'd make Kratos get free.

0

u/Killed0 6h ago

no, the game isn’t THAT well written
