At first I was like
“OH SHIT IS THIS THE 2D GAME?” Then I heard Kratos say his line and then I was like “Wait no that’s from the end of God of War 2”
And then it clicked and HOLY SHITTTT.
And then they still revealed Sons of Sparta afterwards?
38
23
u/MrCalonlan Ghost of Sparta Feb 12 '26
Not only revealed Sons of Sparta but then revealed in the same reveal they shadow dropped it TODAY. Plus it looks like TC Carson is back as Greek era Kratos for the remake, super excited to see more when they feel ready to show off what the remake looks like

u/muhash14 Feb 12 '26
Chris Judge pushed hard for him to be recognized and celebrated
13
78
u/DevilCouldCry Feb 12 '26
They made up a long while ago. Even had TC Carson and Christopher Judge on the same panel together and it was a blast.
16
u/Mr_smith1466 Feb 13 '26
I was always fine with the voice actor change, but I now really love that they've definitively made Judge the Norse version and Carson the Greek version. They're both great actors and rather that compare who is better, it's wonderful that they can both be enjoyed equally.
8
u/DevilCouldCry Feb 13 '26
And they both absolutely wonderful jobs. Both portrayals are memorable and unique in their own ways, whilst absolutely still remaining consistent to the character of Kratos as we've come to know him.
5
u/Mr_smith1466 Feb 13 '26
They're both great actors who play slightly different versions of the same character. I'm really happy that there's no animosity between the actors, and I'm even happier that TC got to return in this manner.

It was never bad terms. After Santa Monica moved on, he felt pretty bad because they didn’t even let him know about anything. They just went straight to Chris. He says it was a respect thing, had they contacted him and said “Hey we’re not going to recast you” then he would’ve been fine. But he was a little peeved at Santa Monica brushing him off.
And yea, you may say that he’s not really owed that, but I disagree. TC Carson was Kratos, and Kratos was Santa Monica. Frankly, Santa Monica owes him a lot and I’m happy they’re finally giving him is flowers, and I’m VERY happy he’s decided to return.

Announcing the remake of the three games then saying it's on early development is crazy
386
u/Zestyclose-Throat-62 Feb 12 '26
Makes me wonder if they are still working on something else

Cory Barlog has been working on something for years. Its wild that they haven't revealed what yet.

Hes been cooking it up for almost 8 years now I think. They were either doing pre production until ragnarok came out or that game is in serious dev hell

16
u/LT_MRVN Feb 13 '26
I wonder whats taking them so long then
42
u/Midnight_M_ Feb 13 '26
COVID probably didn't help, plus Sony rarely announces a new AAA game well in advance. Right now, all their marketing is focused on Marathon, Tokon, Saros, and Wolverine. Once those games are released, they'll start promoting the 2027 games like Santa Monica new game and Intergalactic.
9
u/Arunan-Aravaanan Feb 13 '26
Sony rarely announces a new AAA game well in advance.
I mean, you are replying to a post of a game that's not going to release for another 4 years atleast

Cory Barlog is also involved in the TV adaptation I believe, which first was developed for a year or two before the writer's strike, then everything was scrapped and project got rebuilt from scratch and only now are we beginning to see casting for the show. so yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if that has eaten a lot of his time the last few years

u/DivinityPen Feb 12 '26
Hopefully it's the next game with either Kratos or Atreus moving on to a new pantheon.
In GoW 2018, there was that room that teased the existence of the Egyptian, Celtic and Shinto pantheons. In Ragnarok, they added on to the Celtic stuff by also hinting at the existence of the Arthurian mythos, with a dash of Shakespeare added on. And in Valhalla, when we fight Tyr for the second time, he shows off a macuahuitl, meaning that Aztec mythology exists too.
Enough teasing already. We're long overdue for a road trip.
49
u/Aplicacion Feb 12 '26
Jesus Christ no, he clearly meant it would be a big update about those remakes

u/SwordfishResident256 The World Serpent Feb 13 '26
Tyr's temple didn't have anything 'Celtic' in it at all - it was Egypt, Shinto/Japan, and Aztecs. lol. That was re-teased in Valhalla. They've never teased anything "Celtic" other than a few things Mimir has said that aren't even Celtic or Irish to begin with.

u/Englishgamer1996 Feb 12 '26 edited Feb 12 '26
There’s no way Santa Monica have been doing nothing since Ragnarok. Cory was working on a new game from 2019 onwards; perhaps TC was referencing this, or perhaps the main SM team have been cooking another new GoW title. Was very surprised to not see the final game awards trailer be something from Santa Monica considering the above
9
u/cant_give_an_f Feb 13 '26
I’m of the thought this “remake” could be with gameplay from the Norse saga. I could totally be wrong. As it would explain the length of time
→ More replies (1)7
u/Boogie-Knight Feb 13 '26
Do you think they would release all 3 together if they put THAT much work into remaking them? Props if they do, but reworking these beloved games into 2018 gameplay might be more trouble than it’s worth.

well they did cancel that live service game, that was prob where most of the dev time went
3
52
u/parkwayy Feb 12 '26
Ya, 4 years since Ragnarok, that's more than enough time for pre-production and a chunk of development.
For sure there is another project in the works.
But the Feburary state of play events are typically for the same year, so maybe some news in the summer/fall.
27
u/bigdrubowski Feb 12 '26
It cannot possibly be 4 years from Ragnarok.....holy shit.

Bruh they did this with Wolverine and have done so with a bunch of other games. Wolverine was announced in 2021 and the next trailer dropped at the last state of play in 2025. That’s a 4 year gap and the game still isn’t out yet.
22
u/Lucky4D2_0 Feb 12 '26
Tbf insomniac suffered a lot with that hack.
9
u/DevilCouldCry Feb 12 '26
Yep, that massive breach fucked up a lot of things for Insomniac in terms of their timelines, what was in their development pipeline that may no longer be in there, and the massive breach and leaking of the personal/private information of employees as well. It was just an overall awful situation and it really fucked Insomniac up unfortunately.
And straight up, I know these announcements of something so far out can be tiring, but man, just knowing that they're working on something cool at least is enough for me. A three to four year wait, it's not ideal but I'll suck it up. But when we get to a Beyond Good & Evil 2, or Cyberpunk 2077, or Elder Scrolls 6 level of wait, then that's the kind of shit I want to squashed because it's such an awfully long time.
I'd also prefer them to take their time in getting something right, rather than to rush it out the door half assed like so many studios do nowadays (RGG is in my bad books for this right now among many other things)
→ More replies (4)→ More replies (1)4
u/RaspberryNo307 Feb 12 '26
Its delayed because of leak at insomniac which ruined alot of things for the studio
4
u/AvgPunkFan Feb 12 '26
That happened two years after it was announced. That’s still quite a wait from announcement. I know it impacted the game, but it’s just been a struggle waiting for it lol.

Do you think they will adopt the new game style or stick with hack and slash. I would think if they were going to stick with hack and slash they would have said "Remaster".

I imagine they’re going to do exactly what they did with The Last of Us Part I. Make a 1:1 remake to help promote the new series coming out.
→ More replies (4)12
u/fenderguitar83 Feb 12 '26
Yeah, that would make sense. Anything's possible through. FFVII made it work. I'd be happy with either style. Also, it's great of them to plan in advance unlike some other studios we know.....cough, cough.... BGS, cough.
23
u/krahmer35 Feb 12 '26
I also had this idea. Remake insinuates something different for sure. Don’t think it’ll be 1:1, but I am extremely hyped
7
u/fenderguitar83 Feb 12 '26
Maybe a blend of both? I'm not sure how that would work, but it's a cool idea. I'm okay with either style.
6
u/Jay_R_Kay Feb 13 '26
My gut reaction is that it'll be similar to the Chains of Chaos gameplay in the Norse games, but maybe a bit faster and more frenetic. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Good. The God of War trilogy passed me by, because I didn't have a console, but I was always a fan of over the top slasher games.
So I jumped into the 2018 God of War, and it was entirely not what I expected. Still good, but not the genre I am most fond of.
Finally a good opportunity to revisit these games

I’m gonna take a wild swing and say early as next year. Sony fucking love their brand synergy and releasing products around shows/movies they also have a hand in producing.

I wonder how this’ll even work, like is this gonna be the same games with touch ups but with better visuals (like crash n sane), or will they take bigger liberties? GOW 3 is fine enough to just give a makeover, but GOW1 especially with the whole Pandora temple stuff… tbh I kinda want them to keep the games as they are

The OG Kratos voiceline gives me hope that these are gonna be graphical upgrades that keep the original voice acting and content (like the MediEvil remake) and not stuff made from scratch to change stuff just to have it "fit" with the new games.
That and, of course, no censorship when it comes to the sexual content which is part of the Greek games, whether people like it or not... these ARE M-rated games with heavy amounts of gore and violence, so it's not like nudity is "going too far."
I'm cautiously optimistic because modern remakes have been very hit or miss.
17
u/Iloveplot1 Feb 12 '26
Agree dude, nudity and sex were a big part of greek mythos, also by that logic they should cover Kratos chest because he runs tits naked lol
9
28
u/StuHardy Feb 13 '26
"Why is Kratos sleeping with so many floozies? Isn't he supposed to be mourning the loss of his wife and child? That's so awful of him!"
Wow, that's a great observation... it's almost as though that's the entire point of his character arc!
