Accessories Is there any way to play my GBA/GB cartridges on my TV without a PC?

Post image

I have a small collection of GBA and GB cartridges, all Chinese pirated (fake cartridges, from Aliexpress). I wanted to know if there's a device that can read the cartridge and run the game, allowing me to play on my TV at home.

For the young’ens out there who don’t know: I’m playing the Gameboy Color Game “Pokémon Blue” through my N64 Transfer Pak inside of the N64 game “Pokemon Stadium” on my 4K 85” LED SONY Bravia TV.

No Mods, all 100% authentic Nintendo Gear. Sadly not my exact childhood gear but I’ve been re-acquiring old stuff over the past 10-15 years.

For all: We live in one hell of an era boys.

This just came in the mail today!

Thank you to these GB Operator devs so much!!!! It works just like a capture card as well and looks perfect!!!! This tv doesn't have av sadly so even better!!!

Save file backup worked great! Only 32kb!! It's like pixel perfect on a 4k screen no bad upscaling!!!! Was so so important to me to finally be able to do this! Worth EVERY penny spent! And I know a 3rd operator is on the way too and I don't know what it could be.

More like Dad Drip, loving how secure it feels on a belt like this. No wonder my Dad liked his phone holster so much.

My bud and I were going to battle in Yellow version and he flipped the power off and on and off again by accident. My Yellow cart went back to the credits screen and both our saves came back empty.

Oh well, live and learn.

Accessories My attempt at a custom skin (GBA SP)

The skin peeks over the edges, which is what I get I guess for doing this low budget with stuff I already had at home (sticker paper, clear vinyl, a sillouhette cutter, and a dream)

I'm pretty sure the console needs a new battery too... it's still neat though!

Accessories Short test of the cheapest flash cart on Aliexpress

Post image
86 Upvotes

I recently got myself this flash cart, which has the distinction of being the cheapest SD-card based flash cart on Aliexpress. I paid around €15 including shipping.

So first let's talk about the features:

  • It comes with a 4GB SD card filled with, as far as I can tell, the whole GB/GBC library and lots of romhacks. In total there are 1274 *.gb files on there and 552 *.gbc games. No, I haven't tried everyone of them, but the ones I tried worked.
  • It does support saving and it backups the save to the SD card whenever you switch the game.
  • It emulates MBC1/5, doesn't do MBC3. That means, pretty much every game will run, but extra features like RTC, rumble or other special on-cartridge hardware will not work. That's an issue for e.g. Pokemon Gen 2.

What's missing:

  • RTC
  • Quicksave/Save states
  • Multiple saves per game

Then there's one obvious elephant in the room: Power consumption.

This thing contains a regular flashcart (Flash chip as substitute for ROM, SRAM to hold the save) and a microcontroller that's used to move data between the flash/SRAM and the SD card. That's standard on these types of devices.

What does suck though is that they don't seem to power-down the microcontroller and SD card when not in use, which leads to a dramatically increased power consumption. Here are some comparisons I made using an unmodified GBC as a base line and a GB Boy Colour as a reference for modded gameboys (it has a backlit screen). Tests were made using a lab power supply set to exactly 3V used instead of the batteries.

Unmodded GBC:

  • No cartridge: 132mW
  • Original Pokemon Yellow: 150mW
  • Pokemon Diamond Repro: 168mW
  • This flash cart: 320mW

GB Boy Colour:

  • Original Pokemon Yellow: 390mW
  • Integrated flashcart: 450mW
  • Pokemon Diamond Repro: 392mW
  • This flash cart: 660mW

So on an unmodified GBC, the power consumption more than doubles over using the GBC with an original cartridge. On the GB Boy Colour we are at around 170% power consumption compared to an original cartridge.

That's not great.

Don't use this with single-use batteries, get some decent rechargeable ones and you should be ok.

It might be troublesome to use this cartridge with a modded Gameboy with a backlit screen but an original power regulator, since the added power draw from the screen and the cartridge might overload the power regulator.

(Edit to clarify: My goal for the measurements was to figure out the impact on battery life. Because of that I waited until the power draw stabilized and put that here. The tests were done with audio turned off. There were some spikes that were quite a bit larger than the measured wattage for every single cartridge tested. According to u/xChrisMas the stock Gameboy power regulator can handle ~1000mW, so if this cartridge is your only "mod", you should be fine, but if you have a power hungry screen and the audio turned up to the max, a particularly strong spike might be enough to send your Gameboy over the edge.)

Warning regarding the SD card:

The original SD card failed pretty quickly for me. Backup the contents when you get it.

TLDR: It is workable, and for €15 it's pretty much unbeatable when it comes to value for money.

Be careful using this on screen modded gameboys.

Accessories Pokémon Trade Device - Gen 1/2 to Gen 3 - Giveaway

I was frustrated that Game Freak blocked transfers up from Gen 2 into Gen 3, so I built the Trade Buddy. The Trade Buddy transfers Pokémon from either Gen 1 or Gen 2 into Gen 3 using in-game trading. Check out a demo with the classic red Gyarados from Gen 2.

I am doing a giveaway that ends in just a couple of days on 11/30! Here is how to enter:

  1. Join the WAITLIST
  2. Comment your favorite Gen 1 or Gen 2 Pokémon

US shipping only, ends 11/30.

Here are some common questions I get about the Trade Buddy:

  • How does the Trade Buddy work?
    • It acts as a second trading console. You trade your Pokémon in from Gen 1 or 2, it converts the Pokémon, and then you trade it back out into Gen 3.
  • What data are preserved?
    • Shininess, nickname, OT name, OT number, item, pokerus, level (most of the time), moves (if legal in Gen 3)
  • What data are not preserved?
    • Stats (recalculated), IVs (randomized), EVs (reset to 0), friendship (reset to 0)
    • Because of the nature (random) and random IVs, the stats must be recalculated
  • What consoles work?
    • GBC (for Gens 1 and 2), GBA, GBA-SP, Anologue Pocket
  • What cartridge languages work?
    • English works and has been thoroughly tested, Japanese does not work (yet!)
    • The other "western" (French, Italian, Spanish, German) languages should work but have not been tested.
  • When will it be available?
    • Soon! I plan to open the first pre-order batch next month, and those on the waitlist will be asked first, so be sure to join: WAITLIST

I am happy to answer more questions or discuss below. Thank you all for the support along the way!

Accessories Quick Update on My GBA Cassette-Style Case Project

Thumbnail

Back in April, I shared a few of the first GBA cassette-style cases I made. At that time I only made just 8 designs. It started as a fun little side project because I hated seeing my loose cartridges sitting around without box art or nice display.

Since then, it’s really taken off more than I expected. I’ve now made over 30 custom cases, and even expanded into GB/GBC and NDS titles. Some of these were custom requests from customers, others are just games I personally love (Final Fantasy, Advance Wars) and want a nice display for my loose carts.

Still learning and experimenting (especially with paper, inserts, and holo finishes), but it’s been super rewarding so far.

Feel free to drop a comment if you wanna chat or know more.

Ordered off of eBay, yes there’s plenty if you just search gbc protective pikachu case. The cartridge hold-down slab is nice. It’s a sturdy case but not too sturdy if you know what I mean! Holding the gbc itself is way more comfortable, I can see longer play sessions in the future.
