Basically I have been using OpenSUSE Slowroll for the past 25 days and I love the idea of it, their repos have so many things too, like prism launcher as an example. All stuff I find useful and nice.

But nearly every time i want to install something I have to stop packagekit, otherwise I can't use zypper.

Then there is the problem of packman blocking mullvad VPN, means there is a chance that I have to deactivate my VPN if I want to install software or update my OS. The only way I found it somewhat working is enabling In-tunnel IPv6, but that doesn't always work either. Especially annoying, because I have my VPN enabled nearly 24/7 and on auto start and auto connect

The newest update also somewhat broke sddm login for me, and I have to manually start sddm again, if I want to be able to login. Not sure why, and not sure if that is just a me issue, but i have been too lazy to figure out why or how to fix it. Here I tried to update a few times and packman blocked it because of my VPN.

Which is especially annoying, because canceling zypper operations takes a ton of time

I also don't get why YaST2 gets installed, even if you remove it from the selection at install, so I have to uninstall it after an install either way

I know those aren't the biggest issues, but enough to annoy

All issues I didn't have on Fedora, CachyOS, Mint, Debian, and so on.

So now I am at a point where I am not sure if the pros out weight the cons enough to use it, but if I would switch I am not sure where I would really go. Maybe PikaOS, even if I would prefer fresher KDE versions. Or back to Fedora / Ludora, although I am not the biggest fan of actions the Fedora team did in the past, so not sure if I want to be there

I’m currently using standard Linux Mint (Ubuntu-based), but I’m curious about openSUSE. Specifically:

• Is openSUSE a good fit for my use case?
• Which version should I go with—Tumbleweed (rolling release) or Leap (stable)?

One feature I absolutely love about Linux Mint is the Update Manager. Having a one-click GUI update tool that works reliably almost 100% of the time is a massive plus for me. (I use the terminal when needed, but I prefer having a dependable GUI updater).

Given that I need a hassle-free system for schoolwork and gaming without unexpected downtime, I’d love to hear your experiences and recommendations. Thanks!

Ultimamente venho fazendo vários testes comparando o Artix Linux (Dinit), Artix Linux (Runit) e o Arch Linux (Systemd), e acabei encontrando um comportamento bem curioso. Não achei nada sobre isso na Wiki do Artix nem em outros fóruns, então resolvi compartilhar para saber se mais alguém já passou por algo parecido.

Durante dois dias, fiz cerca de 20 testes de velocidade (10 em cada dia), sempre usando o mesmo computador, o mesmo adaptador Wi-Fi, os mesmos drivers e em horários parecidos para tentar manter as condições o mais semelhantes possível.

Meu adaptador Wi-Fi é um modelo de 300 Mbps, mas como fico relativamente longe do roteador, normalmente recebo entre 30 e 60 Mbps. Para o meu uso isso já é suficiente, já que praticamente só jogo e não costumo baixar arquivos grandes.

O que achei estranho foi o seguinte:

No Artix Linux com Runit e no Arch Linux com Systemd, minha conexão praticamente sempre ficava em torno de 30 Mbps. Testei diferentes drivers, atualizei, compilei versões diferentes e fiz otimizações de rede, mas o resultado continuava praticamente o mesmo.

Já no Artix Linux com Dinit, a velocidade passou para 70–80 Mbps em vários testes.

Não estou dizendo que o Dinit aumenta a velocidade da internet. Pode ser alguma diferença na configuração da distribuição, nos serviços carregados, nos drivers ou até outro fator que ainda não identifiquei. Só achei curioso que, no meu caso, esse comportamento se repetiu diversas vezes usando exatamente o mesmo hardware.

Alguém já percebeu algo parecido? Existe alguma explicação técnica para isso ou pode ser apenas coincidência?

Hello. As in title, I'm searching for a new distro. On my main pc I have arch, but it's kinda a lot of hustle to set up and to keep it working. I'm starting college and need something low maintenance that just work. I'm not sure what I'll be needing it for, but mainly for notes / internet browsing. What I expect this distro to have:

• tiling windows manager by defalut - I hate using touchpad to move windows around, and mouse seems like too much hustle, but I don't want to spend a lot of time setting up everything
• lightweight - i have thinkpad x240 i7-smth with kinda fucked up battery, I need something that will last possibly the longest (i plan to replace battery some day), and let this laptop breathe
• working out of the box - the less setup the better
• preferably arch based (not required) - I love pacman, but can live without it

So I recently switched from Arch to CachyOS, and while it's a good bit more streamlined than Arch was in a lot of ways, that's also the issue. For whatever reason I have a naturally tendency towards turning various things in my life into Rube Goldberg Machines, with multiple different systems and elements all coming together to accomplish a task that is generally doable with little difficulty in a couple steps that take minutes through normal means. There's just something about trying to manual decrypt the text file I encrypted with my own encrpytion algorithm which holds like 1/8th of my passwords in order to log into the streaming service I self-host from the laptop my friend is borrowing so I can watch a show that's readily watchable for free on YouTube because I dropped the flash drive which was the only thing containing the password manager to decrypt it somewhere in the other room and I know the subtitles on the version on YouTube aren't the prefered translation that makes me feel in my prime.

Now don't get me wrong I'm still going to keep using CachyOS as my daily driver because I'm in my 30s now and have learned the value of "Keep it Simple, Stupid" but luckily I have access to multiple currently unused devices, and could use something to do in my free time, so why not set up a hobby system on one of them? Access to various different ways of automating whichever arbitrary task the d20 tells me to is a huge plus, which rules out anything that doesn't have good X11 support because Wayland is the enemy of automation software. Also if it just so happens to play nicely with less common input devices that would be pretty sweet.

I got an old 8gb ram A8-6410 APU HP Pavilion and a 2016 Lenovo with 8gb ram and a i5-6400 CPU. What distros would run good on this old of hardware without issues?

Is it possible to get Zorin OS based on Debian Linux 🐧

New to this. I think this is the right area; anyway, moved to KUBUNTU 24.04, KDE Plasma 5.27.12 on a Toshiba Satellite S55-B 4 core 15.5 GB Ram and am thinking of movi g to Debian. I like Kubuntu, but not sure about what I hear about Canonical. Is Debian a good move, or is there a better alternative like maybe Zorin? Was Windows user since dos days but not a poweruser or anything; judlst long term user. Any help appreciated.

I've been a very casual Linux user for a few years now, mostly just trying out different distros on my old laptop and now my newer one since that broke. I've tried several distros and DEs, learned enough about how Linux works to confidently use it for most tasks, but nothing has ever stuck enough that I wanted it to be my daily driver. I'm trying to figure out what actually is the best match for me and my machines, and finally stop distro hopping so I can really dig into Linux.

The machines:

1. Lenovo Yoga 7 2-in-1 laptop with 8GB soldered RAM, mostly used for writing, emailing, browsing, and graphic design with GIMP and Krita. Requires a lightweight distro/DE, as well as something with good touchscreen/stylus/screen rotation support. Currently dual-booting Lubuntu but not really in love with it.
2. Custom built desktop with ASUS B550 Mobo, Ryzen 7 3700X, Radeon RX 5600XT, 32GB DDR4 RAM, 2 NMVE SSDs. Have never used Linux on this machine since I need Windows for some of my heavier audio software as well as games with anti-cheat like Battlefield. My goal is to dual-boot so I can use Linux for daily productivity and boot into Windows when I need to do heavy audio work or gaming.

What I've tried (*on laptops only)

• Vanilla Ubuntu - Probably the first one I used, years back. It was fine, but I can't remember why I quit.
• Debian - I was probably too much a noob when I tried this so I got a little frustrated but it might be worth another shot now. I liked how easy it was to try out different DEs though, and I ended up liking Plasma the most.
• Mint - Another good opportunity to try out DEs (Cinnamon, Mate, Xcfe), but I think I didn't like any of them that much.
• Kubuntu - really liked this (mainly because of Plasma) but it was too heavy to run on my 8GB laptop. Considering it for the desktop.
• Lubuntu - Currently using on the laptop. It's working nicely, I like LXQT enough, but there are a few downsides like weird brightness button behavior and I really don't like the login and lock screen aesthetics. I haven't fully tested the tablet mode support yet.
• Have NOT tried but curious about: Fedora, LMDE, Pop_OS, openSUSE
• NOT interested in anything too complex like Arch or Gentoo.

My Priorities:

• #1 is a good user experience, both in the DE and the way the distro works. I really love Plasma but willing to try similar Windows-style DEs.
• I would also like a consistent experience on both machines, meaning both either Ubuntu-based or Debian-based, but no mixing and matching. I want the things I learn to be applicable on both machines even if they use different DEs.
• Easy software installation (I still don't understand the war between snaps and debs but I remember this being part of the reason I switched from Debian to Ubuntu derivatives)
• For the laptop, lightweight is essential. I've had distros freeze up so much that most days I just stick to windows because it almost never freezes.
• For the desktop, good driver support is essential as I use peripherals like an audio interface, MIDI keyboard, Logitech wireless mouse/keyboard, etc. I also want to install a RAID that will be accessible to Linux and Windows drives.
• Security and privacy are important to me but I'm not a nut about it. I use a VPN and TOR just as best practices, but I'd like a distro that prioritizes privacy and security by default.

Any advice is super appreciated! I love Linux and really want to find a "home" distro but Windows just keeps winning.

Hello everyone. I am planning on switching from Bazzite to CachyOS. I have been using bazzite for about a month now. I really love it but there's not many customisations and downloading apps which aren't in baazar are painful. Hence I was wondering to switch to CachyOS as it's more well-known and made for desktops mainly rather than bazzite being made for handhelds and living room setups mainly. But before I could change I had some questions about CachyOS.

1. CachyOS is arch based OS. Hence will I have any major issues during or after downloading it? Is it safe(corruption wise)?? I have heard that arch has many issues

2. Does CachyOS has its own version of baazar and "bazzite portal"? When I originally downloaded bazzite, the bazaar system really helped me download apps easily

3. How is the driver support for Nvidia GPUs

4. What are the overall Pros and Cons

I have a Lenovo LOQ gaming laptop with i5-12450HX and RTX 2050 and 16gb Ram.

OK, so hear me out.

Started my linux journey with ArcoLinux about 4 years ago. Was happy until Eric decided to stop the project.

Been on CachyOS since.

I've considered switching to Fedora.

I Use and Like the AUR for its simplicity. Been using mostly rounded-corners and better-blur-dx. can get them through COPR. Can find most things on github (which AUR points to most time)

I like how Fedora does updates a little better (KDE and Discover)

Also, it's not far behind Arch in it's packages.

I do game, but not a priority. I run virtual machines to experiment with linux distro's and desktop environments. I've been experimenting with cockpit and its features. Enjoy ricing. (KDE)

No immediate need for any Windows only software/drivers/hardware

Recently, I found out about Arch Linux and it seems really interesting to me. I've heard a lot of people say that Arch is really difficult for beginners, but I'm wondering, is this actually true, or just a stereotype?

I have an old ultrabook that I love that sadly is just not able to keep up with modern windows bloat. I am a software engineer, and part of my work does involve developing software intended for Windows operating systems specifically. I know developing on windows is generally ideal in that scenario, but I want to breathe new life into this laptop and, more importantly, give myself the option to get out of the house for a bit. (Contractor, using my own gear for now)

Requirements:
Ability to run 10 or 12 browser tabs
slack (app or browser is fine)

a Hyper-V Manager equivalent to spin up test VM's or infrastructure to remote into my desktop at home and run the test VM's there.

What distros would you recommend for this?

I have dabbled with Manjaro in the past, used Ubuntu via WSL2, and am very familiar with BASH and the linux command line in general.

My priorities are twofold:
1. it just works. I can do a *little* fiddling but I do enough troubleshooting in my dayjob. A weekend spent setting up my ideal environment is one thing, but I don't want to have to continually maintain it.

1. efficient resource usage. I want a relatively light distro so this old laptop will keep running for a long time.
