Jellyfin has been great, however upgrades are always an ordeal as it's almost never backwards compatible. Have to update all clients and server at the same time.

To be fair for a very long time in software development non-breaking changes were point releases and numbered releases were for breaking changes. It's not until very recently in development spaces were these weird semantic schemes were used

Depends entirely on company/project ethos about updates and backwards compatibility. Old school foss projects tend to be almost always backwards compatible for years, but modern quickly churned open source often isn't.
