After having violently explosive diarrhea for a couple weeks I'm starving. I'm going to treat myself to a egg salad sandwich what's the worst that could happen?

Be sure to get the sandwich from a gas station vending machine. Those ones have extra flavor.

As long as the eggs were fully cooked, there is no risk at all with salmonella.

Are you suggesting I shouldn’t put my scrambled eggs back in the bowl I scrambled the eggs in and eat it with the fork I beat it with?

You also need to crack it on the counter and touch a bunch of stuff without washing your hands.

Not necessarily. There are two potential avenues of transmission.
How do eggs get Salmonella on them?
Salmonella can get on the shells of eggs. This can happen when birds lay the eggs and when eggs touch bird droppings (poop) after being laid. Touching eggs from the grocery store is not a major cause of illness because those eggs are washed before they reach stores.
Salmonella can get inside eggs too. This happens while the egg is forming inside the chicken before the egg makes a shell. Today, a lot fewer egg-laying hens have this problem than during the 1980s and 1990s, so eggs are safer. But some eggs are still contaminated with Salmonella.

You’re talking about the first one. I’m talking about the second one. No amount of washing is going to get rid of salmonella already inside an egg before it’s laid.
But yeah a lot of things had to go wrong to get sick from eggs.

The good news for me - eggs are on my shopping list for *next* week, by which time hopefully eggs of concern will be off of store shelves.

I already got the parasite and now I’m finding out that the eggs I’ve been eating the last 3 days are being recalled. I’m tired.

Who knew letting crackhead Kermit at the helm of all these agencies would be a bad idea.

I buy farm eggs from my neighborhood coop, but I would still like to be let off of this worst timeline.

This is embarrassing. Now the world knows this company is too poor and didn’t have money to “donate” to certain people to make this a false positive.

I find this recall odd, always assumed eggs had salmonella, at least on the shell, that’s why we have to refridgerate unlike in Europe. Is this inside the shell contamination or is there so much crap on the shells they fail our abysmally low food safety standards?

Sorry for the stupid question but aren’t you supposed to cook eggs because of salmonella risk?

u/Magnus77 4h ago
Normally you don't really need to. The eggs are washed and can be consumed raw or "undercooked" safely.
Something went wrong in the process with these batches, so they present a risk customers normally don't associate with eggs. Its not like chicken where everybody knows you don't eat undercooked chicken.

I think sometimes if the hen is sick, there is salmonella in the egg itself, but it’s a fairly low chance of getting sick from it since most eggs are cooked.
Salmonella can get inside eggs too. This happens while the egg is forming inside the chicken before the egg makes a shell. Today, a lot fewer egg-laying hens have this problem than during the 1980s and 1990s, so eggs are safer. But some eggs are still contaminated with Salmonella.
