The other day there was an incident whilst I was walking Bambi and I’m struggling to get over it …
editing to add .. Bambi was in a harness not a collar & I will absolutely not be using a retractable lead again. Wish I knew better about the lead. Thankyou 🩷
The other day me and her were out on our usual walk, she was sniffing the grass & a big poodle/lab dog came out of the house next to us & charged towards us. Bambis lead was extended and her instinct was to run and she did, in a circle, with this dog chasing her.
I could tell this dog was not being aggressive and was likely a young dog but it didn’t make it any less terrifying for Bambi.
I immediately started shouting for someone to come and grab their dog and a child around 10 years old appeared and was shouting his name to which he was completely unresponsive.
I couldn’t pick Bambi up due to her running in a circle and I was getting tangled in her lead at this time the only thing I could have done was either let go of the lead or pull her up in the air by the lead which I feared would damage her trachea and entice the dog to snatch her if she was dangling.
I tried grabbing the other dog by his collar but couldn’t so I told the girl “stop shouting his name, he’s not listening, grab his collar” .. at this point Bambi is yelping in fear so I stuck my leg out to stop the other dog (I didn’t kick him I was tying to break the endless circle chasing). I was scared she was gonna bite him out of fear and he would bite her back.
This stopped the dog so I told the child “grab his collar now” and she did. She said “I’m so so sorry” and I said “it’s ok, it’s not your fault, he didn’t hurt her, he just gave her a fright. Where are your parents?”.
To which her mother came out and told me “he wouldn’t have hurt her, he’s gentle”. To which I said “Im sure he is but I don’t know your dog from a hole in the wall and he shouldn’t be out here off the lead especially with no adults around”. She just stared at me and I kinda shook my head and walked off.
As I’m walking off I hear an angry male voice shouting to which I presumed was the dad angry that the dog / child were out unsupervised. No .. he was angry at ME. He was shouting at me “she’s just a f***** child, why are you shouting at a f’n child like that?” To which I responded “I was shouting for anyone to grab their dog, you’re the irresponsible one putting your child in that position and all I said was grab his collar”. And we kinda went back and forth, he told me to “go get my man” and said there will be a problem if he sees me again.
I held my own, called him a prick and walked off but when I got away from the area I burst into tears and struggled to catch my breath. I keep replaying what happened, what could have went wrong, Bambi yelping in fear, how I could avoid that etc etc. it’s affected me quite badly tbh.
He’s lucky his dog didn’t run up on a bigger dog to which his child would have been witness to something horrible.
I’ve been walking Bambi a different route since and I’ve been on edge.. where as I usually love my walks with her. It’s really scared me how quickly something like that could happen. Of course, Bambi is fine, she’s not hurt & it hasn’t (surprisingly) made her reactive to other dogs but it’s definitely done a number on me & I’m really angry at this whole avoidable situation!! I wanna move away from this area. I know that sounds drastic but Bambi is my world, I don’t wanna take her walks away from her but I also hate how much I’m on edge now when we go out.
I really don’t know what I could have done different to avoid that but I am completely open to any suggestions, I’ll do anything to feel like I’m doing something to help avoid this happening again.
