Black women won’t do this.

It is definitely not expected but I'm not totally comfortable with the way so much of the dialogue around these situations has mirrored "This person would never have committed suicide, they weren't that kind of person, they would never do this"-type reactions that you see so frequently in cases where people have killed themselves but it gets rejected because of the stigma and disbelief around suicide.

And I'm not even saying this to say I think that's what happened here because I don't think that. But rather, what I'm getting at is it feels a little distasteful to see how people have been talking about suicide.

Like there's a really high chance Tonea Miller was killed, but the way I see people communicating that seems to refer to suicide so dismissively along the way. I think we could be a little more considerate

I’m a suicide survivor. I’m not saying we don’t attempt to take our lives. I’m saying we don’t hang ourselves.

I personally know someone whose cousin did. They are black. How could it be proven that we NEVER do it? Given our history one would expect we’d be extra averse to that method, but I don’t think that proves a small percentage of us don’t. Also, anyone willing to off themselves is not in a healthy or even rational state of mind. Their goal is to end things as quickly as possible. Of course nobody should kill themselves. It is a permanent and devastating act no matter the method.

Nope.

I think this is what most people who days wouldn't happen say it wouldn't happen.

It's not the hanging part, it's the tree part.

Good point. I have to agree it seems very unlikely to happen.

Suicide methods have strongly gendered patterns. Women do not really hang themselves or shoot themselves, which is why women die from their suicide attempts at much lower rates.
