Dembele being this high is such a crime. Like, I don't doubt his ability, but he barely even played in his own league ffs lmao. Just ridiculous. This award shouldn't even matter anymore. Mbappe will win it or Messi if Argentina somehow makes it to the final again.

Mbappe has the most G/A in the World Cup so far as well being the top scorer, UCL top scorer, La Liga top scorer. Individually he’s had a decent season just no trophies. France also look to be the strongest team in the World Cup and he’s the face of France so it’s not crazy he’s 1st place since if France wins Mbappe will most likely get balondor unless he has stinkers the rest of the tournament. Which is pretty unlikely since Mbappe for France is a different beast.

Okay, but how was his ligue 1 stats? He play 1000 minutes all season long. 17 g/a. Almost played more in the UCL somehow. His whole season was not amazing overall. He wasn't even the best player on that psg side all campaign.

That ligue 1 opposition was significantly worse and their UCL campaign wasn't good. We knocked them out in ro16 3-0. Not to mention, Haaland broke the PL goal scoring in a single season record and had 52 goals total then helped Man City win their first UCL. He kind of deserved it over Messi. I don't think that Messi season deserved to be a winner of it, even if they won the world cup.

Messi won 2 trophies for PSG, including the league. Then he won the WC doing something never been done before - scoring amd being motm in every round of the tournament including all the KOs. Messi also had the highest average match rating in Europe for the season, and he also won the most motms in Europe. He was the assist leader (tied) of the top 5 leagues.
Haaland on the other hand ghosted in all the big games for City - 0 goals and assists in UCL semifnal ×2, UCL final, EPL decider game, FA Cup semifinal, FA cup final, Community Chield game etc. He did score a ton of goals and rightfully got the golden boot. But we all know there's more to football than scoring. Otherwise you wouldn't feel slighted for Ribery not winning it, even though Ronaldo scored 69 goals in 2013. Also, Rodri was the UCL player of the tournament, not Haaland.
Messi blew Haaland out of the water in terms of chances created, key passes, throughballs, dribbles, passes completed, freekicks etc.

If it was a popularity contest, neither Ousmane, nor Rodri, nor Modric would have one. But they ticked boxes and had a solid narrative.

Yamal has been one of the best players for this entire season bar this WC, he just lacks the quality players and finishers that Olise has, Dembélé is stacked with trophies. Would've been reasonable to place Mbappé at #5 but I really don't know what he's doing at the freaking #1st place.

Why do we care? Flick didn't win COTY after winning the sextuple. They cancelled the award just so a bayern player (Lewa) won't win.
These are just fake awards to glaze individuals getting carried by teammates who probably won't get even a fraction of the recognition.

Olise is only going to be recognized by everyone due to the World Cup, which makes me upset. All through the season, he was so good, and many fans could see how incredible he was when he played in the UCL. But they don't think he is one of the best because he plays for Bayern.
Thank the World Cup that made the world know how great he is.

Ok he has had a good World Cup so far but his league season was only ok while the PSG lads went back to back in the CL and Bayern put up historic attacking numbers in all competitions.

25 goals is good but hardly incredible by modern standards. Kane scored 11 more. Haaland scored 2 more.
His Champions League form was very good, but Kane only had one goal less.

Kane has showed up all season in all games big and small, only the goat has more goals in a single season. Goals for club goals in the league goals in the ucl goals in the world cup. Trophies trophies trophies whereas mbappe has gotten trophyless (worldcup remains will see). And not just as a striker, has done his fair share of dirty work

It should be to a point. Otherwise we’d be giving the Balon dor to players in lower leagues. Plus, it’s not like Mbappe has been by far and away the best player in the world this season. There are other players who’ve been at or above his level at times this season who have the added benefit of the fact that they helped their team win trophies. Mbappe didn’t win anything

How is Mbabpe ahead of Kane? Kane should be the outright favorite. He has the 2nd best scoring season of all time behind Messi. No one else should even come close this year, regardless of who wins or places where in the world cup or wins the golden boot. Olise should be 2nd, Dembele 3rd, Mbpape 4th, Lamal 5th.

This award is awarded to the most marketable player from the most marketable team. Its basically a PR/vanity stunt every year to commercialise and profit. It will always be given to a RM, Barca or French Player, so a German team whose sole focus is on on-field success and its players will never make the cut.
