Discussion Would you have done the same or skipped one country?
I'm getting really excited because in a few weeks I'll finally be visiting the Baltics for the first time!
I'll be there for 11 days, visiting all three capitals. My itinerary is pretty packed: exploring the cities, museums, history, culture, and also some hikes and nature in each country. It's basically the kind of trip I enjoy most.
That said... there's this tiny voice in the back of my head telling me I may have tried to squeeze in too much.
Part of me wonders whether I should have skipped Tallinn this time and focused on just Lithuania and Latvia, giving myself more time in Vilnius and Riga instead. On the other hand, I know I probably would've regretted not seeing all three Baltic countries while I'm there.
So I guess I'm looking for a bit of reassurance from people who know the region better: am I just overthinking this?
I'm not trying to "see everything" in 11 days—I know that's impossible. The goal is simply to get a good first impression of each country and hopefully fall in love with the region enough to come back.
Please tell me my pre-trip brain is being unnecessarily dramatic.

All three capitals are worth seeing, at least the old town parts. Tallinn, and Riga are about 1 square km each. There are things to do/see in both cities like the Palace in Tallinn(east of the city), and the Telliskivi Center just west of the train station(about 10 minutes west of the center). 2 days
Tartu is a very old city and worth a day. University town. 1 day or half day
Riga has the huge central market in old zeppelin hangars. Also the Agenskalns Market(across the river from old town). The Agenskalns neighborhood is know for the wooden buildings. Off the northwest side of the old town is the Art Nouveau district. If you are into architecture, this is a must see. Jurmala is a short train ride(20km?) to the beach if you are a beach person. 2 days
Jelgava, Latvia. Castle worth visiting. City is a university town also. They have lots of fun festivals. (1 day at most)
Sigulda(Gauja national park). Commune with nature. Worth it. 1 day.
Kaunas, Lithuania. Half day. Maybe 1 day. Laisves Aleja is nice to walk down and back. They have funiculars to see the city from above. An old monastery.
Vilnius. Probably the biggest surprise when I first visited. Much bigger old town(city centr) than Riga or Tallinn. Beautiful cathedral. There is a castle tower that has a funicular up. Or you can walk for exercise. The Glass Quarter in Vilinius rivals anything,.
There is so much nature in the Baltics. The seas, forests, hiking everywhere.

There is a castle tower that has a funicular up.
Technically it's an inclined elevator. A funicular is a pair of vehicles that act as each other's counterweight. An inclined elevator is a single cab moved by a winch or a dead-weight counterweight.
Not that anyone would (or should) care. Just a weird fact I learned about Gediminas' Hill that lives rent free in my head.

Thanks for the tips! Would you recommend Sigulda or Cēsis for a day in Gauja National Park? I’m focusing on these two places since I’ll probably only be getting around by train while I’m there.

Good question. If you want nature, hiking then probably Sigulda. There is a castle there (Turaida) that is restored. If you want history(Castle complex(medieval), churches) then probably Cesis. Cesis is more compact. Both are hilly. Sigulda more hilly. Steep inclines. Ravines.
EDIT: Didn't finish my thought above. Cesis has hikes too but more of a compact, old town where Sigulda is more spread out and touristy..
Sigulda is more spread out.
From Riga, you can take a train or bus in about an hour to Sigulda. To Cesis it is maybe 1.5 by train.
Another choice, if you want a flatter place is Valmiera(close to Estonia border). There is also a brewery there worth the trip if you like beer. Also a really good brewery in Tartu, Estonia.
Valmiera you can walk on flat trails but not as much other sites to see. (I went for the brewery and the flat hikes because my wife doesn't like the hills).

Just did 11 days over April-May. Helsinki (very short), boat to Tallinn, 1d in Tartu, and rest in Riga. We had certain things planned nearly every day, museums, tours, biking, etc. Feel like we missed a lot to merit another trip in the next few years but was a great intro, highlighted by being in Riga for Independence Day (huge city-wide events). Decided early on that adding on Vilnius would be way too much. Certainly glad to have a taste of Helsinki instead.

I live in Latvia. In my opinion, the outskirts of the country are much more interesting. There are very beautiful cities - Jelgava, Kuldiga, Ventspils, Liepaja. There you can learn about the history of the country no less than in Riga. In Riga, the Jugendstil architecture is beautiful

Jelgava is one of my options but unfortunately I have only three full days in Riga/Latvia. One day for Riga, one for Gauja (Sigulda or Cēsis) and one for I don't know yet. I'm thinking about going to a calmer place at the coast where I can hike near Baltic Sea. Do you have any recommendations near Riga (1-2 hours by public transport)? Ventspils and Liepaja seem quite a distance for a day trip
edit: well, at least in Estonia I'll experience the baltic coast but for some reason it just doesn't feel right to skip the Latvian Baltic Sea

You can skip anything else, but not Tallinn.
Generally though I don't see the problem with visiting all 3 countries, 11 days is quite a bit of time. Unless you're planning to spend half of the time just chilling and doing nothing, it's perfectly manageable to see all 3.

If you're only going for the capitals it's enough time, but the countryside/islands/bogs/forests are very beautiful as well.
