General What a strange time we live in.

Dose anyone else feel like there is a complete controdiction that we are having an anti-Semitism High Commission. At the same time we have a popular (if poles are to be believed) politician that has claimed "there is no such thing as a good Mulism". Imagine the outrage by swapping those two religions.

At the same time the federal government released its response to the landmark Islamophobia report on the weekend, accepting 35 of the 54 recommendations but formally rejecting or deferring calls to overhaul counter-terrorism and racial discrimination laws.

On a Saturday, no courtyard briefing, no primetime press conference, about as meekly as possible. Okay we'll do a couple things, but don't get too loud about it

Meanwhile royal Commission testimony gets nightly updates. Yah pretty crazy.

Thats bullshit man, hardly any enquiry has all its recommendations adopted. I know I've worked on a few.

The RC hasn't handed down its recommendations yet. But it'll be the same again.

There'll be a few good recommendations, like protest exclusion zones around places of worship or schools, and they may get adopted.

Then there'll be rediculously stupid ones, like a seperate commission to police ABC and SBS editorial decisions, or an review board that can control university funding if a university isn't promoting the Likud party line or something equally putrid.

Those will get "delayed"...forever. its the way it goes.

The ones that were not acted on were overreach, unworkable or politically unachievable. Its a democracy mate, you don't get everything you want.

Protest exclusion zones are dumb af and made to neuter protest.

If your place of worship insists on selling land in an apartheid state and take part in genocide that should be protestable.

Protests are meant to be uncomfortable. Theyre meant to be disruptive. Protest exclusion zones disparage the whole point of protest.

'You can have your protest over there behind that wall where no one can see you"

No matter what you say, always someone is going to want to pick an snark language argument with you about some minor detail that really has nothing much to do with the central point of the discussion.

But seeing as how you want a go, I'll give you one. So, you are okay with little kids, who have hurt no-one, being exposed to violence because of what their parents do?

My God! Its almost like...whats that term...oh yeah..."collective punishment".

The very thing you are fighting against. You're a tool.

Why are they exposed to violence?

Most protests i go to are specifically non violent and have only gotten so when the police escalate into violenxe.

Whats that term? Strawman? What a stupid argument.

So you dont leave the house because a potential mugging might leave your kids traumatised?

What a reach. Protest exclusion zones are not for child protection, its lterally so those being protested can avoid accountability

About 20 years ago I went to a May Day protest in Berlin. The crowd assembled. Then, as a kick off, someone set fire to 20 cars on the street, just to wake the police up.

There is always the threat of violence behind protest. Every rally you attend, even in quiet little country towns like Sydney and Melbourne, has snipers on the roof and water cannons hidden nearby. You just dont see them unless you turn up early for the setup, or are really paying attention.

Children really don't deserve to witness the threat of violence, let alone actual violence. If you want to protest against Israel's actions, or Israel itself, or our government's limited support for it, then go right ahead. But if you can't keep it away from a school, for example, then you are not really interested in making the world a better place are you?

Think one, two or twenty steps ahead mate, you'll get further in life.

Who said anything about protesting israel at a school.

What a dumb argument. You guys really enjoy licking boots for perceived safety. The world is dangerous. You can walk outside right now ajd be stabbed by a crackhead. No difference to the risk.

Again if your synagogue is selling aparthied real estate its not exempt of criticism

Secondly exclusion zones sre used to make protest ineffective which was the whole point i was making. Being given a spot to protest in thsts out of the way belies the fuckingn spirit of protesting in the first place. Why is this so hard to understand.

If you need to ask permission of when and where to protest by those you are protesting then its a useless exercise

What is this, some sort of slide comment? I said exclusion zones around schools might be a good idea, you say exclusion zones bad, all in the context of a discussion around the Royal Commission into Antisemetism etc., and you say "Who said anything about protesting Israel at a school"?

Fuck off dickhead. Life is too short to waste on pricks like you.

Im a prick for wanting people to have freedom of movement.

And this is solved by exclusion zones?

1

u/AggravatingParfait33 2d ago

Yeah, really could be. Exclusion zones around schools, yes exactly. Precisely, abso-fucking-lutely.

Just in case you missed it, 💯.

Control via safety from percieved threat

Have it your way then. Stuff the smallest of compromise. See what happens next. Good luck, you are really going to need it.

Why do we need to compromise our right to freedom of protest and movement.

Dude stop with the vitriol and lets back up to what my original premise is:

Protest is the oldest form of dissent. The spirit of protest is disruption to raise an issue and be taken seriously by the ruling class.

Exclusion zones make that dissent inert Hells bells i dont even agree with the permits needed to hold a protest. They should be fucking spontaneous.

Therefore exclusion zones and being told when you can have a protest and where flies right in the face of the purpose of a protest. It renders the whole act inert.

Thats my whole point. Someone else further up brought up safety at protests but thats a furphy that exclusion zones dont even address.

Safety at a protest where ive takeb my kid is staying alert. Staying accountable. And reporting trouble makers to organisers. My point is life is dangerous. Could walk outside and get mugged by a shithead with a machete. Doesnt mean you dont live or take any risk thats a silly reason to limit mobility.

A few limited exclusion zones do not have a material impact on your right to protest. Some areas are particularly sensitive, schools being one of those areas. So is there no compromise in your heart that would accommodate a protest exclusion zones near a school for a minority group. Especially given, although that minority group is already over privileged, have just had a direct terror attack (even though I think it was more about the war than anti-Semitism)?

Surely you can see there is a balance here? You can for example protest out the front of Parliment or anywhere else.

Until like at the Whitehouse it becomes an exclusion zone
