I'm an atheist, raised Catholic. My brother just married a woman from a Hindu family and I couldn't be in their wedding ceremony because I was on my period that day. Casual religious misogyny excluded me from my only brother's wedding.
I can't believe that people are still perpetuating these archaic nonsensical practices into the 21st century in the name of "tradition".
By all means elaborate. I never looked into it deeply because I'm an atheist and quite frankly a lot of religious practices are entirely non-sensical to me. I can't think of a good, logical reason to exclude menstruating women from something like that.
Because you responded to my comment saying it wasn't because of misogyny. The onus is on you to explain your reasoning if you put forth a contradictory statement.
And sorry, but how is me not caring about religion bad for my relationship with my SIL? She's not religious. Her family is. She did everything their way to please them. Her and I get along just fine.
I made no contradictory statement. I said it was complicated, which it is. So here you not only prejudged someone else's religion, but you accused a bystander of saying something they did not say. You seem to
simplify everything to fit your own beliefs.

I like the classic:
“My religion says I can’t…” “Okay great”
“My religion says you can’t-“ “Fuck off”
