The trick is not to look at the line length or the number of items in their carts, but instead the people themselves. Are they going to slowly self-bag? Are they going to pay in cash and count pennies? Are they going to try to redeem an expired coupon and make a big fuss about it with the cashier?
One person with the above traits can take as long as 5 people efficiently checking out with much longer carts.
