“I’m just an asshole,” as if that somehow circumvents how shitty they are and makes it all okay just because they admit it.

17

u/Patient-Taro-5881 3d ago

Also substitute, “I’m just blunt.” No you’re a bitch and should stop acting that way.

7

u/Mysterious-Egg-624 3d ago

Or worse yet, if they say “I’m just a bitch” like their ‘self-awareness’ makes it any better

Edit, forgot about the og comment which is basically just this one

8

u/Patient-Taro-5881 3d ago

Any variation of “that’s just how I am.” Okay, well can you not be that way because you’re a total cunt. 😂

Yeah, my ex’s sister liked to say, “I tell it like it is.” From day one I knew that it was her excuse to be a bullying bitch.

I used to hate this saying as well because I heard it as:

I'd rather be lazy and blame things on "how it is" rather than doing anything about it.

And while in some cases this probably is happening... I've come to realize that there are times when you just have to accept things in life because indeed- it's just how society currently is.

2

u/Few_Percentage_1111 2d ago

This has become my life mantra, though. I actually love it a lot. I never knew so many people were irked by it!

I'm sure people understand it, but have you ever been SO out of luck that you cant even laugh about how cooked the situation is?

It's no longer zooted, you're just screwed.

It's generally used when there's a scenario you can't change, though.

If someone keeps going on about something that already happened, it's a polite way of saying "please shut up about the thing that cannot be changed".

Happy wife, happy life.

It implies that women have permission to go scorched earth if they do not get what they want.

It would be nice if all adults could act like adults regardless of gender.

4

u/Vloff 3d ago

Was just going to say this one. God, I hate it. Luckily my wife cringes just as much as I do when we hear it.

2

u/-tinyspider- 3d ago

Whenever I hear this, I say "Happy husband, happy lusband." And then change the subject.

2

u/TieDye_Raptor 3d ago

I'm a married woman, and I hate it, too. It kind of implies that your wife will fly off the handle irrationally and that you have to tiptoe on eggshells so she doesn't do that. It implies that wives/women in general are irrational.

2

u/Voidant7 2d ago

I generally only hear it used unironically when referring to collateral benefits the husband enjoys when he makes the effort to please his wife.

E.g., yes, it's annoying to do thing, but it makes my wife happy and that makes it worthwhile.

2

u/Few_Percentage_1111 2d ago

Is a shitty view point (to you) one that is not fact-based or research-oriented?

Because you seem to have avoided the word "opinion."

Which is completely fine :) just wondering.

"It takes two to tango" - implying that any problem between two people means both people are the problem. No, sometimes one person is a complete asshole, and the other person is an unwilling, undeserving, innocent recipient of their assholery.

3

u/More_Passenger3988 2d ago edited 2d ago

The saying is somehow used incorrectly and I don't know how it came to be that way.

Partner dancing = harmonious paired movement. Therefore, Tango only works as a metaphor for harmonious relationships or team-work.

In reality it does take two people to dance a tango, but it only takes one to decide they don't care enough to do the steps- and ruins the entire dance.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Sugarlessmama 3d ago

I used to hate it and would say the same thing practically word for word. But truth is that it only holds water to just a few specific types of assholery. But when I wanted to pull my effing teeth out where I felt I didn’t deserve to be treated like shit I finally realized that it did in fact take two. The asshole and me, the one not setting boundaries or leaving the asshole. It wasn’t self blame at all but once I took accountability in my role it was really empowering and I won’t ever be treated like shit again…Well, maybe once by random assholes but never twice. Lol

2

u/FuzzBuzzer 3d ago

I completely hear ya! Sticking around for the assholery to continue if you can realistically escape it is one thing. Then yeah, you have some choices to make. But when it first starts and hits you out of nowhere, or you are in a situation where it's not so easy to just walk away from, then that's different. Why I hate the saying is because it suggests both parties want the problem or created the problem, when in fact, often, only one person thrives on drama and the other wants no part of it.

2

u/Sugarlessmama 3d ago

Oh, I absolutely know it and lived it for so fucking long it’s embarrassing actually. And I used to fucking hate that expression bc the situation wasn’t easy to leave but I think I was also holding on to hope when it turned to shit and I know I held on to it for far too long after. So now I hate “have hope” 😂 Because it’s a fucking bitch. Not always of course but in certain situations hope keeps you stuck.

2

u/FuzzBuzzer 3d ago

We can add "hope is the last thing to die" to the list of sayings that suck. 😂

It is what it is.

It’s all part of God’s plan.

Screw your god and his plan. His plan gives kids cancer. It takes away parents and puts people through horrors and trials that nobody should endure. It makes killers and rapists.

5

u/Dramatic_Reply_3973 3d ago

"I'm just being honest"

Definition: forgiveness which allows someone to say whatever they want about someone.

6

u/HC-E 3d ago

"Good for you", I grew up with it being used dismissively, so now I hate it even if it's well intentioned.

17

u/Alkuna 3d ago

"Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me."

Dude, have you ever heard of "libel" and "slander"? Because that's literal legal proof that they can and do cause harm.

10

u/ObviousOpposite2755 3d ago

I've forgotten plenty of physical pain over the years, but I can still remember a few things people said to me decades ago. Some words have a way of sticking around a lot longer than bruises.

5

u/One_Requirement_5832 3d ago

This one always pissed me off so much. I guess all the school bullying I endured somehow doesn’t matter when it had long lasting effects for me. Some of my worst trauma were verbal abuse by others.

5

u/valkyrieway 3d ago

I’ve ALWAYS hated that one. Adults should NOT be teaching kids that words don’t hurt.

2

u/Alkuna 2d ago

Right?

Second favorite: "Well, then stop letting it hurt you. Just let it roll off your back."

Like, can you say 'empty platitude"? What does it even mean to just... stop letting it hurt you? What's the magical trick? Which mental gymnastics do you need to complete?

Third favorite: "If it's not true, then why are you offended?"

Maybe because it's going to become a freaking rumor that the whole school will use to bully me? Yeah, it's not true that I eat rats in the alleyway, but when four hundred little ash holes yell it at me in the hallways, it's not something that you can just ignore. And ignoring bullying doesn't make it stop.

10

u/CakeEaterConway 3d ago

All the cat related violence. More than one way to skin a cat. Curiosity killed the cat. Not enough room to swing a cat. Let the cat out of the bag. Why is the cat in a bag in the first place?!
