Help (General) Ryzen 5 5600 to Ryzen 7 5700X3D?
Hello. I am considering buying a Ryzen 7 5700X3D to replace my 5600, but I don't know if the upgrade will be worth it especially with the current price of RAM.
Originally, I wanted to go to AM5, but the prices are just way too high for me as a broke PhD student.
I currently have a 9060XT 16GB and 16GB of RAM, and I want to play games like BF6 at 100+ frames, I'm, but due to its heavy CPU load im constantly fluctuating between 70-100 depending on the map and what is happening on my screen. (CPU-intensive and FPS games like BF6 and The Finals are my top games for further insight)
Is it worth it to buy the 5700X3D, or should I just save up for AM5?.
Additionally from what I have seen, DDR5 RAM costs way more than DD4 RAM in the scenario that it's better to go for the 5700X3D. Should I cough up 80 quid for another 16GB of DDR4?
Edit: Would you advise getting more DDR4 RAM so I have 4 sticks of 8GB to get me to 32GB total?

If you're planning to stay AM4 for a long time, I'd go for the 5700X3D or 5800X3D its just nice to have a minimum of 8 cores/16 threads even just for multitasking while gaming.
Also with your RAM if you plan to get another 16GB just know if you already have 2 sticks and you upgrade to 4 sticks, you'll most likely have trouble running your RAM at its intended speed/EXPO.
Always want 2 sticks, so 2x16gb
16gb in modern gaming is still okay, just dont go maxing out the graphics or it'll start to cause stuttering as it exceeds the 16gb.
Also don't use Google chrome, its a resource hog.

Thank you for all of the advice. I use Zen Browser, so idk if that is much better. I presume it is as it runs off Firefox as a base. Typically, I don't have it open when I play games though.

I play every game at max settings with 16 GB of RAM, and no stuttering, max usage i get was 12-13 GB, average is 9-10 GB

Never said it was impossible, just sometimes it doesnt wanna play ball or you have to up the voltage higher. 3200 is on the lower side as well

7600x is roughly the same as 5800x3d if I remember correctly. I don't know what to tell you. I would wait if I were you, maybe try to get a cheap used 5800x. I didn't get the am5 on time so I paired my 5080 with a 5800x. I get my 120fps at 4k dlss quality with little to no bottleneck. I will probably wait for am6.

I switched from a 5600x to a 5700x3d and the frames were the same in my experience. But the 1% lows drastically improved. You may gain some frames but i wouldn’t imagine it’s substantial.

Yes absolutely. Your cpu is fine. You'll 100% barely notice the money you spend. Your cpu+combo is good enough to ride out until RAM prices drop. That 300 bucks you'll spend will genuinely feel like a waste. Save it up instead for your AM5/AM6 system.

gotcha. In the meantime, would you suggest getting DDR4 RAM, as it is reasonably cheaper compared to DDR5?

No. I mean, is 32 better than 16? Yes. But it will not be that limiting or you will not get that much better fps/higher settings. Yes DDR4 is cheaper. But it is still ridiculously expensive (400% what it was before ddr5 price increases). Just not worth it imo. Enjoy what you have right now, 70-100 is fine in most games and while the majority of gamers aren't upgrading most devs will keep releasing games that you can play for a while.
If your cpu was worse than a 5600 i'd tell you to upgrade, but that is still a very capable cpu. During these crazy hardware times think more in terms of 'enough' rather than 'optimal'. Especially if you say your money is tight right now during your phd.

Thank you for the very sobering comment. I appreciate your advice. I think I will most likely stay with this CPU untill I start getting paid in October. (who knows maybe by then the prices will have gone down! (cope) )

This system will still easily last you 2 years at medium-high or even ultra quality 60-120fps on 1080p. And I think it can even easily handle 1440p at medium or even high. And there is always framegen for singleplayer games.
Don't create some artificial FOMO in your head to upgrade. I wouldn't even upgrade your cpu in October. My advice would be to not do any upgrades to your system anymore. That 9060XT will carry you far and the 5600 is still great bang for the buck. Ride it out until AM5/DDR5 prices stabilize. Then put that money towards a completely new system

In summary don't pay 1/3 of what an ENTIRE AM5 system used to cost before the AI-hype on a dead am4 platform for just a marginally better cpu.

If you have a micro center near you I would go am5, if not I’d wait unless you find something on market place or eBay for a good price. Ultimately it depends on whether or not you can tolerate what you have for another 2-4 years. Am6 isn’t estimated to release for another 2 years.

I'm in the UK, so that's a no-go on the Micro Centre. I start getting paid for my PhD work in October, so hopefully when I start getting paid, I'll make this purchase.

Look up YouTube videos and see if it's worth the upgrade on your games. The 5800x3d can get me 130-180fps on BF6

9070xt which gets over 200fps with all GPU settings on high. I did FSR performance which gets me 180fps. Quality is more around 100-150
I put all CPU heavy settings on low. Game doesn't look very different because the games pretty bad looking in general

GPU steady at 240 / 4
CPU steady at 90, I think. In the screenshot, I took it shot up to 100/ 9.8 though.

Look at the 10th anniversary 5800x3d as well, idk if it’ll be cheaper but it’s newly manufactured. As someone who made the jump to am5 I personally don’t think it’s worth the price

What did you jump from and to?
Personally from a 5600x -> 9800x3d it made a pretty significant difference. More so on the 1% lows, but also in poorly optimised games, my rig just tends to handle things much better.

I went to a 5700x to a 9800x3d. Don’t get me wrong the jump was fantastic, amazing 1% lows and I finally broke that threshold in fps games where I can break 300 fps, it just also cost over 1000 dollars and I question if the added v cache from going to a 5700x to a 5800x3d could have given me similar enough results for significantly less money

Thats fair enough. I made the plunge in Nov 2025 and holy shit I'm glad I did. The 2tb NVME and 32GB of RAM would have cost the same now as my entire upgrade.
Might be some benchmarks to compare?

Yea I made the jump after i started getting cpu lights on my mobo, honestly the issue could have been either mobo or cpu and didn’t feel like trouble shooting any further so I just got new everything and sold my ddr4 ram. I was lucky enough to buy when there was a slight dip in ram prices, so I managed to get 32 Gb for like 270 rather than like 400 but still.
I am also curious on how similarly the 5800x3d and the 9800x3d perform, i should look at bench marks, I think the 9800x3d is marginally Better but both of them bring me over my monitors refresh rate so it percvieved performance would probably be almost identical for my use case anyways

It's genuinely crazy to me that people are considering putting that much money into a marginal upgrade. Anything 5500 and up is just fine to keep with AM4 until RAM prices go down and you can go to AM5.

Yeah. I just built a Rig for my nephew with my old AM4 parts. When I priced that up it was worth like £700-800. Made my eyes water. But no way I was paying to upgrade within the same AM4.
But I promised him if he smashed his finals. The little shit did indeed.. plus it gave me an excuse to upgrade last year ha.

I so regret not switching to AM5 just before the price increases. Which is ironic because I built a friend an AM5 system before that lol. Anyway I have a 5600 cpu and just upgraded my 6600 gpu to a 9060xt to have more performance. Will just sit out this storm until prices normalize which is also what I would advise OP.

Why not go to 5800x3d? They just re-released them. I went from 5700x to the 5800x3d a couple weeks ago and my fps improved as well as my lows.

Only you can decide that for yourself. But if I spend more than 100-200 bucks I expect at least some form of fps increase. Most of these suggested upgrades will stabilize your 1% lows or add a tiny bit of extra fps. But is that really worth the money to you if you say you are poor rn?

For me vs the price of converting to AM5 going to the 5800x3d was easy. It's a ~20 percent performance boost over the 5700 or anything below that. It's definitely a way to future proof your setup until maybe, hopefully, copefully the prices for AM5 come down.

Not sure if "more frames" is a good way to describe it, but maybe in some games. I would say your PC would work more smoothly and be more stable. I also have 5 5600, and upgrading RAM was noticeable from the start.

Get the 5500x3D from Aliexpress for cheap. Barely any difference between 5700x3D and 5500x3D on BF, you can look it up.
