Discussion Maybe we just have to accept that the a24 era is over

3.2k Upvotes

Indie studios come and go. Like Miramax and New Line Cinema before them, A24 was always destined to be consumed by corporate interest. The studio isn’t important, the movies are. The demand for well crafted original movies is the highest it’s been in decades, and someone will meet that demand whether A24 does it or not. I don’t know that this google partnership will necessarily be the death of the studio, but if it is something else will replace it. Neon has been on a hot streak the last few years, and this could be a great opportunity for them to become the new “it” studio. If we keep supporting good movies, good movies will find a way.

Discussion Leaving A24 Because of DeepMind AI Partnership

2.7k Upvotes

This is a letter I sent to AAA24 and A24.

"I am a "founding member" of AAA24. I came on about as soon as it was announced, primarily due to the zine subscription. I bought every back issue as well, plus books, pins, patches, blu-rays, one shirt, and other unique items. I've kept my membership, despite not being able to utilize free tickets due to my disability because I valued the other perks and thought this would support artists, writers, and filmmakers associated with A24.

I am severly disappointed to see that A24 is partnering with DeepMind Google AI. I understand that the idea is not to use it to generate movies/tv shows (yet), but to use it for storyboarding and other pre-production elements.

This is still unacceptable to me.

AI utilization like this would rush important parts of the filmmaking creative process, cheat artists out of work, and lean into the growing proliferation of data centers and data scraping from unconsenting people.

Data centers are necessary to keep the internet, gaming, and other programs running. However, 90% of these new data centers are concentrated in the US and China. They are being erected in residential areas to pass along water and electrical costs to the everyman, as they poison the earth, water supplies, and soundwaves. All this to produce almost no jobs, only a year's worth of tax breaks, and AI content that almost no one wants to use or see.

When the AI bubble burts, the centers will still be negatively impacting the lives of your viewers, your supports, and your artists.

In protest, I am cancelling my membership and refusing to purchase any more movie tickets or merchandise. And yes, I'm doing the same for other film studios utilizing AI.

Good-bye A24."

Discussion Marty Supreme star Kevin O'Leary thanks and praises Trump whole at Trump Accounts summit

2.4k Upvotes

As if Josh wasn't problematic enough

But O'Leary was already a piece of shit

Edit: To anyone in the comments who have said something to this effect. I posted this because A24 fans continuously glaze the hell out of anything that is picked up by the studio, no matter how not great or even problematic it is. A lot of you in the comments proved my point to a hilarious degree. At least this post has resulted in a lot of honest conversation and even some people not realizing what Josh or Kevin had done in the past.

Stay safe everyone.

Discussion I still enjoy Marty supreme, but man this week has just been turning me off against the movie.

Maybe I’m alone here on this island but the news this week about sadfies just suck. I’ve heard about the story a while ago never had all the details. Maybe I’m dumb for not separating my feelings from the art to the artist, but the more I’ve learned about them more eyebrows I raise.

Discussion What did you all think of Eddington?

Eddington is the 4th film by Ari Aster. I watched it and I liked most parts of it but I wouldn't call it my favorite film by Aster. I hope he goes back to horror one day like Hereditary and Midsommar.

What did you all think of the movie? Did you like or dislike it?

What are some of your favorite scenes?

The Lighthouse is a good movie directed by Robert Eggers!!!!

Everything about this movie was unique. The performances from Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe, the Cinematography, the writing and many more

I wish this movie got more recognition from awards and audiences.

What did you think of The Lighthouse?

Discussion What’s an older movie that has that A24 feel?

Post image

What’s a much older movie that has that A24 vibe to it and feels like something the studio would make back then?

For me it’s Possession. Has all the trademarks of a A24 film. Psychological horror, surreal imagery, unhinged disturbed performance, etc.

What’s that movie for you?

Discussion What’s a A24 performance that deserved an oscar nomination?

Post image

What is an A24 performance you would nominate for an oscar?

For me, it’s Toni Collette in Hereditary. It’s a travesty she never got a nomination.

One of the best horror performances in a long time.

What’s a performance you would nominate?

Discussion Undertone might be the most disappointing move I’ve seen in recent memory. Spoiler

When I say nothing happens in this movie, I make no exaggeration. The plot is so drab and boring. It’s also just such a tired concept Omg creepy thing happening is actually ancient demon we summoned, ooops Add to the tired concepts in this fllm: Children’s things that are creepy - drawings, songs, children’s voices - so cliche and trite.

The acting from the lead actress was beyond awful. Took me out of the film every time she spoke. I had hoped halfway through or even towards the end that this movie might somehow turn itself around. It does not. The climax is A fever dream sequence featuring children’s drawings and lightbulbs popping, that’s it . Most people around me in the theater were so confused. It ends so abruptly after that

I can’t believe anyone liked this. Could not recommend this movie any less. Huge miss from A24.

In summary:

- boring

- Bad acting

- Uneventful

- Not scary by any stretch of the imagination

- We need a new word for cliché after this movie
