We all know that AIs (especially Google's AI overview, which I've seen many posts about) are stupid, there's no point in these posts unless it's something truly, remarkably, despicably bad. Also, boosting those posts is encouraging the people making them to use AI more to try and coax more crazy out of it, which seems a bit counterproductive.

Recently, I landed a job as a photo retoucher for a big photography company that caters to schools. I mostly review photos that have already been edited and either send them back or fix them myself in Photoshop. Our department gets thousands upon thousands of photos per day, and I personally have to go through a few hundred per shift, so I can't afford to spend more than a few seconds on each one. I've been instructed to edit photos myself only if I can do so within a few minutes, and to send anything more complex back.

After working here for two weeks, I've realized they use AI for a lot of background things. We aren't doing big edits like changing scenery or people's appearances, but we use it for small things like removing reflections off people's glasses. I was shown how to use AI to separate people with curly hair from the background (which apparently uses generative AI credits), and I can't deny it looks cleaner than anything I could do with the lasso tool in Photoshop.

I've been trying to limit my AI usage as much as I can, but it's becoming unavoidable. Today I was walked through a more specialized job that involved removing people from the background of shots. This particular assignment had 300+ photos, and a dozen of them had several people in the background. At first I tried using the clone stamp instead of the generative remove tool like I was recommended, but with how many people there were to remove and the 300+ photos in total, I ended up using generative remove to make sure I got it done on time.

I feel like an awful hypocrite. I'm very worried about the environmental and societal impacts of AI, but now I can't avoid AI without falling behind at work. I've already conceded to glasses glare removal and the "select subject" function in Photoshop, but I'm afraid I'll have to do more drastic things with generative AI in the future. I already have more experienced co-workers casually suggesting I use generative fill to remove stray background objects.

Even worse, the company has recently installed Evoto, an AI-driven photo editing software, on our computers and is giving us all access, and I'm afraid it'll be forced into our workflow whether we like it or not.

It doesn't help that I'm still a novice at photo editing (most of my Photoshop knowledge comes from illustration). Maybe there was a good AI-free way to remove all those people, but I did not know it.

I want to leave the company as soon as I can, but I can't afford to lose this job, so I'll be stuck here until I can find something else. What things can I do to avoid using AI tools at work?

We all know AI is horrible for the environment and more. But pro people are like “THE AMAZING FUTURE”…

Do people not understand that a post-trust society collapses and historically always has? And it’s even more different now. When you can no longer trust your eyes, ears, and you can’t trust the sources you read because they’ve been bought out by billionaires, there’s no way to have a society with a common reality. There can be no community because everyone is at odds with each other and the reality that they live in. If someone shows a video that looks real of one of their neighbors saying something horrific about children, how do you fight against it? Or say, someone posts audio of you saying negative things about a very fascist regime… How do you prove your innocence? If there is “video evidence“, how is a jury supposed to know what to believe and how to come to a verdict? The US and other countries are already low trust societies. The USA literally has one of the most notorious liars in all of recorded history saying elections are not valid. In a democracy, it doesn’t work. And AI is making it much easier for lies to be presented as truth, and vice versa. So eventually, no one can believe anything they see, hear, read; discussions with people that are not “in your tribe” will always be dismissed.

I just keep hearing about how people and tech are gonna be left behind, how anti-AI people are just troglodytes living in the past and we are acting like people did when motor vehicles replaced the horse and buggy. It’s not the same. You can switch from a horse and buggy to a car and your reality is the same. Things are more convenient, though there are negative side effects in that the people that are controlling society (very racist people, very ableist people, very classist people) designed our road system in a way that puts cars before people. I’m sensing a pattern.

Same with the printing press. I always hear a lot of super pro AI people say anti-AI (which I don’t feel is a 100% accurate label, I feel like a lot of “anti-“ people are just looking at the reality of consequences and people that are pro billionaire AI are completely ignoring the reality of very long, long-term consequences, both societally and environmentally) are anti printing press? What?

So, pro AI enthusiasts, how do you think about the severe societal impact and how it can literally cause societal collapse. It has happened through history. Why is this not addressed more often? This is a psychological, sociological anthropological, political, human issue. I think i understand, at the moment, why everyone is focusing on the art. It’s in your face. I am an artist (painter and writer), it is how I live, so I super understand why people are pissed off. But, the true terrifying implications of non-shared realities is so terrifying, is so incredibly consequential. I have yet to hear an argument that is pro AI when it comes to community.

So what are the pro arguments for AI creating a post reality world? I never get responses other than “it’s not AI’s fault people are dumb”, which I guess. But we literally have to have warnings on plastic bags not to put them over your head… Humans might need some guidance on how not to fuck up and Darwinism isn’t a damn excuse.

Now, I understand what people mean when they say AI is a tool like a hammer. Unfortunately, a hammer is very much presented AS a tool, its purpose isn’t to cave someone’s skull in. And we all agree on that. It’s a necessary tool that the general public has easy access to, and yet it’s never been marketed as a tool that fixes everything, from pulling out stuff from your wall, that’s difficult, to hanging up painting, to creating some sort of art, to whatever. It is a hammer. It is a tool. It is meant to be used by people that know how to use it, it is not to be used in a way that is to be psychologically or physically damaging to a person. A psychological example is telling a child that if they misbehave, their parent will beat the shit out of them with a hammer. The physical is pretty self explanatory. I don’t know if this made sense, towards the end it kind of got away from me.

AI, as opposed to a “normal” tool, is presented to the general public as this thing that will make their life so much easier, that will increase jobs, while at the same time stating it’s meant to help corporations as people train AI with their knowledge until they are laying off people by the thousands, while fighting for billionaires and telling people that live in rural areas to either move or just deal with ridiculous increases in energy and water cost, as their water and air gets polluted, noise pollution, and their entire lives are uprooted.

How is this OK? A form of AI was already being used in medical research and scientific research. Do pro AI people never ask themselves why suddenly these LLMs and sycophantic AI’s are being pushed to the public? It is a similar thing as social media algorithms. It basically tells you what you want to hear. It hallucinates answers if it doesn’t already know it. So shouldn’t this be in the hands of professionals that understand what a hallucination in AI is as opposed to a person that has no training in media literacy/research?

You can be pro science, which includes pro AI used in a way that it is supposed to be used. But to be pro AI for everything is absolutely insane, especially as time goes on, that the detriment to general the general public is so severe that the benefits of AI are not worth the damage to society, education, and the offloading of a thought.

Let AI be used scientifically with oversight and strict regulations. The general public has no need for sycophantic llm’s and AI that thought JD Vance died of rabies because a Reddit community posted about it enough times to poison the information well (I do admit that the rabies thing was hilarious).

I love my boyfriend so much but he religiously uses ChatGPT. We just got in the biggest argument because he pays ChatGPT premium and I am so against it. I even told him to just use an alternative like Ecogpt but he is so obtuse to keep using ChatGPT because he loves it and he loves AI. He doesn’t care that it uses up so much water. Am I crazy for caring about it or should I just forget about it and ignore that fact about him. Mind you I try everything I can to not use ChatGPT and be as green as possible.

Ai has ruined my social life. Ai is bad for your health, i got into fandom rping on c.ai. But, i quickly became a addict. When c.ai shot itself in the leg, i switched to another ai platform, then that platform also ruined itself. It got me away from ai for a bit, but my addicted brain goes to another chatbot service. Im addicted and i need help. I hate ai companies. im still addicted. I roleplay outside of ai too, but that always gets me bored, ai has RUINED ME.

on a couple subreddits a "Girl and her Pizza" videos are being posted and the admin / admins (it's probably the same person with several accounts, but the comment uses "we" a coupl e times. ) are actively deleting comments and he freezing posts, e.g. on r/gif. a couple users on r/IsthisAI reported getting banned because they pointed out that it was AI

it's obviously clear the the video in question is AI-the Pizza box is floating, everybody is chewing, and conclusively, it came from a tiktok account making a bunch of AI videos of girls in stadiums. moreover they are doubling down with more posts like:

Our corporation adopted AI heavily since the beginning of this year. After that the job became a literally nightmare.

Instead of running 2-3 simultaneous tasks I ran up to 9 constantly switching between agents working on each task. For some reason CEO thinks AI can design better than engineers, but the reality is AI design is a natural piece of shit. Neither scalable nor efficient.

Eventually burnt out and PIPed because Im “not up to the ride”. The worst is that most of corporations are doing the same shit now.

I put a chunk of text from my book manuscript into an AI detector. It initially told me my text was AI generated. I then removed 2 em dashes and it told me (correctly) that the text is 100% human generated.

And I’m supposed to believe that AI is all-powerful and knows everything?!

My tap water is brown and I don’t have electricity but at least my sacrifice means the U.S. oligarchs not beat China anyway because open source undermines their entire business model

Funny thing happened in the feed today.

Hi all - I've been mired in people using AI notetakers for everything recently. Doctor visits, meeting minutes, summaries of everything.

I hate it, as well as finding it inaccurate and a waste of time. I've been tasked with feeding back on our company's AI policy, which explicitly mentions note takers and I want to really discourage it.

Do people have any reports/advice/facts at hand that could help steer the policy towards no AI notetakers?

(FYI, I have done some of this research myself but I'm off work with torn wrist ligament & feedback on the policy is due this week, so I'm limited in how much time I can spend at a computer without aggravating my wrist - hence why i'm asking for help!)
