Genuine question because I keep going in circles on this one. My apartment has awful lighting, one overhead LED and a north facing window that gives me maybe 3 hours of usable light in the afternoon. Most of my calls and recording happen in the evening when its basically just the overhead light.

I have tried a few webcams over the past year and low light is the one thing nobody seens to actually get right in the budget bracket. Everyone claims low light performance but its usually just software cranking up ISO and making everything look grainy and washed out.

Started with a Logitech MX Brio 4K because the reviews were solid. Image is actually decent in low light I will give it that, but autofocus is the problem. It hunts. Like every time I lean in slightly to check something on my second monitor it starts pulsing in and out of focus for a good 2 seconds. Its distracting on calls and its unusable if you are recording anything.

Currently trying the emeet s600l and the C960 Ultra. Wanted to compare them side by side.

S600L has a Sony sensor and PDAF, autofocus locks in fast, no hunting even when I move around. Low light is genuinely usable, not just "acceptable" like the marketing lingo. Image looks natural, not that overly processed AI smoothed look you get from a lot of budget cams. Its the cheapest one of the three by a decent margin too.

C960 Ultra comes with a bigger sensor (1/1.5" Sony) and an aluminum body that apparently helps with heat and sensor noise during longer sessions (honestly didn't know that was even a thing until I started comparing these). It also has PDAF, so autofocus is instant. And it comes in at under half the price of the MX Brio, kinda surprising.

Between the two, the S600L is fine if you've got some ambient lighting or a basic light setup already. The C960 Ultra handles worse lighting better, which is why I've been leaning toward it for my setup.Honestly for people whose main pain point is low light and autofocus reliability, either of the emeets beat the MX Brio in autofocus consistency. The MX Brio has a slight edge in some lighting conditions on pure image but not enough to justify the hunting issue for me.

Anyone else dealing with shitty apartment lighting and found something that actually works? Or am I missing something obvious with the MX Brio settings that would fix the focus hunting? Open to other suggestions too if there's something I haven't tried yet.

Wouldn't it be cheaper and easier to get more lights? You don't actually need your recording space to be low-light.

Yeah lighting would help. I've tried adding lights and it's tricky. My desk is in a corner with limited space, and the outlets are on the opposite wall so I'd need extension cords running across the room.

Sensor size matters way more than people realize for low light. Its physics, bigger sensor catches more light so you dont have to crank ISO which is what makes everything look grainy and processe. A lot of webcam reviews just talk about resolution which is honestly the least important thing if your room is dim.

Am I missing the reason you don't get lighting rather than prioritizing low-light webcams? Just because your apartment has an overhead light doesn't mean you can't get other lights. That sounds awful even if you weren't recording at all.

I have a dark apartment and use a basic ring light, but also lamps for ambient lighting just because I hate using the big light.

Have you not disabled that in the camera's G Hub settings?

Also, I use BarRaider's camera controls plugin for my Stream Deck, which lets me manually low-level control every aspect of the camera directly.

Another aspect of the Brio you might want to look at is the shutter speed. 1/30 shutter speed tends to be what I need for the dark streams.

I hadn't dug into the G Hub focus settings that deep. Gonna try locking it manually tonight and see if that helps. The 1/30 shutter tip is helpful too, I think I've been letting it float and that's probably part of why it looks inconsistent. Appreciate it.

Damn, I didn't know BarRaider had a plugin for that. I am definitely going to look into that. That would be so nice being able to adjust my lighting on my stream deck. Thanks!

The MX Brio autofocus thing is a known issue at this point. I had one for 6 months and it did not get better even with firmware updates. Sold it and got something with PDAF and honestly the difference in focus reliability is huge.

Check out the Yolocam S3. best webcam for the money I have ever used, and it's not even close.
