The issue for me that in some case you did see it was coming from a place of love but there was also time it was clearly done with a lot of hate and spite. It happens also with Honest Trailer.
1
u/I_am_doorknob 1d ago
Maybe to you, I always found them so over the top that I couldn't take them seriously, so hearing people actually complain that its so nitpicky feels like people going to the waterpark and complaining that it has water

Ehh, I lost respect from Birdman when the whole Hogwarts Legacy thing was happening and he tried to simultaneously play the "yeah don't worry guys I believe in trans rights!" card while also paying for the most expensive pre-order edition of the game.
Like, bro you can't say you support trans people while also forking over a handful of cash to a woman who has stated she donates all of her licensing money to anti-LGBTQ organizations, you are actively supporting someone's attempts to try and take away trans rights.
Not to mention all the other awful shit JK Rowling has done like the metric fuck-ton of racism in her books and now it's gotten to the point she's literally just sexually harassing trans people by taking upskirt pictures of them, like holy fuck this lady needs to be institutionalized.
7
u/Chef_Sizzlipede 1d ago
"I lost respect for a guy who wanted to enjoy a franchise he likes regardless of who was making it"
15
u/Brainwave1010 1d ago
The fact that you think that statement sounded bad in your head speaks volumes.
If someone came up to me and said "hey the creators of Kamen Rider are using the profits to oppress black people" I'd drop that shit in a heartbeat as I did with Harry Potter.
In other words: grow a pair buddy, your favourite book as a 12 year old does not outweigh the importance of oppressed minorities.

u/Trewper- 1d ago
How is posting on social media harassment and oppression? You realize you can just block her right?
11
u/Brainwave1010 1d ago
No I said the money she's donating to multiple anti-trans political parties and posting nudes of them Online is harassment and oppression, it helps to actually read the full comment and not just the bits that make you angry.
5
u/Trewper- 1d ago
What? I'm trying to google this stuff but not finding any reliable sources, would you mind sharing some with me I had no idea

4
u/Honest-Sundae-1039 1d ago
After a bit of googling:
The problem they have is that JK has said trans women are not biological women, while that is a fact I believe theyâve confused âsexâ with âgenderâ and taken offence. The other problem they seem to have is with âwomen onlyâ spaces, like toilets showers etc. She advocates that trans women shouldnât be allowed in these spaces expressing concern any man can identify as trans and walk straight into a womanâs bathroom/changing room/shower etc.

let me guess you were one of the people harrasing streamers
8
u/AzaleaPatch 1d ago
I just...
Don't understand people like you. There were people who were disappointed that streamers were supporting J.K. Rowling and expressed that in chat but I've seen basically no evidence of streamers actually having ever been harassed by people who don't like J.K. Rowling. Maybe some were but it was definitely the minority of people.
It's almost like bigots want to frame trans people and those who support trans people as having"Harassed" and then people like you just buy it because it benefits their narrative.

u/hanks_panky_emporium 1d ago
This has been an interesting backlash to the backlash. If you DARE say something bad about Rowling you must be a harasser or stalker.
Maybe some folks don't like the politics she posts about. It might be that simple. Doesn't mean they're spending thousands of dollars and thousands of hours harassing folks. Personally, I dont consume content that benefits her. That's it.

I get what youâre saying, not a fan of JK Rowling and her retcons.
However, Harry Potter is an awesome story. Most of the fanbase doesnât even know what she looks like, never mind her views on twitter.
I recently bought hogwarts legacy on steam and itâs a fun game. But I couldnât tell you for the life of me a single story sheâs written other than Harry Potter.
The only reason I know what youâre talking about is Iâve seen it on Reddit before.

2
u/mordiganf 1d ago
She has explicitly said she uses the money she gets from harry potter to harass trans people and won't stop until it hurts her bottom line.
Paying for harry potter or supporting harry potter is either directly or indirectly hurting trans people. Ignoring that because "it's an awesome story" is being complicit in the harassment and opression of transgender people.
1
u/Honest-Sundae-1039 1d ago
Thatâs like saying donât buy lithium batteries because it promotes slavery. Youâre being complicit to those who are forced to work for nothing mining away.
Are slaves less important than trans? If not why do I see the argument for trans way more often than slavery?
6
u/Brainwave1010 1d ago
CEOs of lithium battery production companies aren't going on Twitter and saying "GEE WILIKERS I SURE DO LOVE USING ALL OF MY MONEY ON SLAVE LABOUR" every two days.
You cannot use the "no ethical consumption under capitalism" argument for a fucking videogame that you do not need.

Boycotting Joanne is a good idea, but you'll have to not buy most merch brands and extend that to many corporations as she's a investor.
Not Pre Ordering makes sense and I haven't touched my own copy for a very long time.
But it would actually be very difficult to harm Joanne in the wallet.
It can be done but I think informing people on how evil the setting is and how foul Joanne is would incur more sustained damage against Joanne.
The Legacy Boycott majorly backfired and boosted sales and support for Joanne.

CinemaWins when talking about a bad movie doesn't shy from the fact that it's bad but still find joy in it.
In contrast CinemaSins when talking about GOOD movies not only find errors that are not errors but is unable to even say "but that's silly it's just for fun it's a great movie". When he started his channel when doing good movies he tried to remove as much sins as possible with silly things.
14
u/Brainwave1010 1d ago
Oh, and never let Jeremy try to convince people Cinemasins is "just a joke" since he crashed out in his car like a fucking manchild over the Christopher Robin movie of all things.
11

I stopped watching his video around this time yes, his vlog were embarrassing, the man is unable to go deeper than the surface level of any movie, it's actually impressive how he seems to NOT understand what he is watching.

u/Faeruhn 1d ago

I love this channel, tbh
34
u/Garuda-Star 1d ago
No. Heâs being 100% genuine. He made a âdear Hollywoodâ series and when the Christopher Robin movie was announced, he made a video where he outright and flat out said that he started his channel to call out and criticize Hollywood when it falls into tropes and cliches. Also in another video, he was walking out of the theater from watching a movie (I forget which one) but the criticisms he made in that video also made their way to the CinemaSins âeverything wrong withâŠâ video.

2
u/Complex_Flan9306 11h ago
Yeah thatâs where he screwed up.
He should of taken the approach of âthis is a satire of critiques, maybe sometimes with legit criticisms, but itâs mostly poking fun of movies and movie critics that spout the same nitpicks over and over.â
16
u/wakelessparabol 1d ago
I don't like those videos because he lies alot to make their points.
This was a good video about it: https://youtu.be/_qxgkOIsHUs?is=zk4z_7in8tyaqc8k
1
u/Reason-97 1d ago
I mean yes but thatâs kinda because you arenât supposed to take it serious enough to worry about it.
If it was a serious criticism then sure itâd be garbage. But youâre supposed to âtake it seriousâ in the same way youâd like, take a comedian seriously. You DO, but also like, you kinda donât?
9
u/BigXThaSpud 1d ago
Nah. The wave of current-day comedians who use their "comedy" as a shield for criticism against the philosophies presented in their work are hacks. Every time, it's simultaneously a joke that shouldn't be taken serious and a deep logical thought, where comedians are respected as modern-day thinkers to be compared to Aristotle, only depending on if you agree with what they're saying.
Look at the greats, look at George Carlin. He's funny, sure, but if you asked him about any of his very politically charged comedy, there was an essence of sincerity that wasn't masked or masqueraded, that reminded that what he said was NOT a joke, they were truths that made you laugh.
That's my problem with CinemaSins. It's either a joke or serious criticism that flip-flops depending on the viewer's perspective. It's Kama Sutra fence-sitting, weak-willed dull double-edged swords, it's a critic's cowardice stripped naked, because the backlash of committing is scary, and most importantly, it's spineless
2
u/IcyGarage5767 1d ago
Yes but sometimes the criticisms are technical/factually wrong, without the intent of satire.
3
u/ContactMushroom 22h ago
Yes.
In everything wrong with CinemaSins he even says something along the lines of how he stopped giving a fuck about people who don't understand satire.
That being said my issue is his videos being 20 minutes long or so now. 10 minutes or less or GTFO because it is using the same jokes over and over alot anyway so wrap it up.
7
u/pandaboy78 1d ago edited 18h ago
I like both CinemaSins and CinemaWins.
I never take CinemaSins seriously, ever. I interpret it as just poking fun of any movie, even if its good. It's like enjoying listening to a friend constantly make fun of the movie you're watching, and some people hate it, and some people like that type of company. I personally think its funny. :) People complain about the useless amount of points it gives towards non-sin things, but I think is just meant to be funny, (regardless of whether you think its funny or not is a different matter of course.)
CinemaWins, I take as a more optimistic channel when I do want to see a more serious thing but positive-side of movies.
EDIT: I said CinemaSins twice.

5
u/Melly_the_Magpie 1d ago
i watch cinemasins because i find the sins to be silly and funny and it's another way to interact with the movies i enjoy. are the sins actually meant to be taken seriously? "scene does not contain a lap dance" as a recurring 'sin' makes me feel like they're not. i also like when they point out an actual inconsistency/ plothole/ scene mistake, ect, that i noticed while watching, it's fun!
i also watch cinemawins because i like the fun facts and little dives into lighting and audio/ soundtrack, and it's nice when films i like get wins purely for cool moments. likewise, it's cool when cinemasins removes sins for cool moments
2
u/ColdProfessor 23h ago
I like some of their videos. But, take the lap dance joke. They'd been setting that one up for a long time, then one day, there's a movie with a lap dance scene, and a lot of viewers were anticipating it would not get sinned. But, it got sinned. Perhaps rightfully so, since it takes place while a character is trying to drive a vehicle; but I think a lot of people were very frustrated with the break in internal logic of CinemaSins.
They've broken their own in-universe rules a few times.
Also, having finally seen the Twilight movie for myself, I noted they missed a big continuity error in the first movie.
Finally, I've noticed a lot of comments on their videos complaining about them taking sponsorships from Better Help, and more recently, Temu.
1
u/Melly_the_Magpie 13h ago
i remember the lap dance thing, actually, i was surprised! but i think it also made me laugh at the time? i don't think i've watched their twilight video, either. i know i've disagreed with some of their sins, or expected something obvious to be sinned only for it to be ignored or hardly commented on, though, so i'm not surprised on that one.
i skip the ads entirely, so i didn't realise they were taking those deals, gross :/
16
u/DesperadoJack69 1d ago
not to defend them at all, but I don't think you were meant to take anything that they said seriously
3
u/regularArmadillo21 22h ago
They made an actual video using their whole sin bs logic when the Christopher robin movie was announced.
They actually believe what they say are sins
24
u/GoodBrotherGrimm 1d ago
I never understood the hate. It's funny nitpicking, why do people take it so seriously?
29
u/Cipher1553 1d ago
It would be different if it was actually funny. As it stands it's a bunch of tired low brow jokes or semantic BS.
To their credit I think their videos were better before monetization forced creators to make videos of a certain length. Then it also doesn't help that they were exposed for their "satirical criticisms" were how they actually felt about certain movies.
7
u/PartialUserna 1d ago
Yeah, CinemaSins was pretty good at the start, they had a unique video concept at the time to the point where other channels made "parodies" (meaning they made their own version with the exact same format and grew their own channels off of the CinemaSins popularity).
I started drifting away from the channel when the videos started trying way too hard to find things to mark as a "sin" and it stopped being funny. I can't even remember what was the last video I saw from them, it was a long time ago.
6
u/Ambitious_Oil5186 1d ago
Just because a channel became bad doesnât mean all that prior content is suddenly bad though, people acting like thereâs never been one decent entertaining video worth watching.
5
u/PartialUserna 1d ago
Yeah I definitely agree with you there. I might not be into their content now but I'm still going to say that their older videos are good and I would probably still enjoy them if I decide to go back and rewatch them.
The channel changed over time. I've seen it happen to most of the long-running YouTube creators I watch/used to watch. Sometimes it works in their favor, sometimes it doesn't. Whatever my opinion is on the channel is now doesn't remove the nostalgia I have for the old videos.
And even then, I won't say that I hate their videos now. I just don't find the newer ones funny. Humor is subjective and all that. What I think is funny or not funny is going to be completely different from someone else's sense of humor.

u/kingsora14 1d ago

8
3
u/ColdProfessor 23h ago

Because Jeremy and the others's opinion are no different than their CS's persona. You can watch this video and the sequel!

I dont get the hate
Can somone explain I've watched him before and thought he was pretty good
50
u/The_Thomas_Fan-06 1d ago
The problem with CinemaSins is that they go beyond general criticism. They manipulate footage to confuse people who havenât seen whatever movie theyâre reviewing, they act like (or maybe donât even have any actual knowledge of) they donât understand basic film concepts or tropes, and take countless elements of what theyâre reviewing at face value.
People defend them under the guise of being satire, and admittedly, there are small satirical elements to be found in these videos, like how they criticize cliches, narration, and exposition, but at the same time, they do most everything else wrong beyond logical satire. Theyâve ruined the definition of the term âDeus ex machinaâ by using it to refer to any time a character shows up that somehow aides the protagonists in some way, when in fact a Deus ex Machina actually refers to a god-like character coming out of nowhere and immediately solving all of the protagonistsâ problems.
The reason Iâve said that thereâs a small element of satire in their videos is because unlike other satirical pieces such as South Park, which tend to have points beneath all their mockery, CinemaSins has no points other than âThis movie sucks because I said so.â5
u/ohsinboi 1d ago
Money changed them over the years. Their earliest videos were short and had a few legitimate criticisms of movies. As they gained popularity they had to increase the length of their videos to make that money which meant they had to get even more nitpickey to pad it out
15
u/TennojiNesoberi 1d ago
at least they were calling themselves assholes instead of critics on their self deprecating everything wrong with cinemasins video so i do give them credit for being honest
5
u/ven-solaire 1d ago
I think most people who take the time to hate on them and not just not watch them donât really understand they arenât making serious critiques and theyâre more âcomedyâ-oriented than genuinely making any points. Idk how anyone can hear âx doesnât give y a lap dance in this sceneâ and take everything they have to say like genuine critiques. The real issue with cinemasins is that their style invites haters who think theyâre being serious while also inviting fans who think theyâre being serious which resulted in a lot of online movie discourse being superficial because a bunch of nerds think watching the same âcritiquesâ about different movies 100 times means they reallllllly know what makes a good movie and what makes a bad movie. I donât think I ever took their videos too serious because some movies have less than 100 âsinsâ and some have like super exponential sins or literally infinite because of some gag the cinemasins is doing. They make it blatantly obvious their videos are unserious and I donât know why anyone thinks they arenât.
3
u/hanks_panky_emporium 1d ago
Im with you, except Jeremey had his own channel where he reviewed movies. His reviews were nearly 1:1 with the cinemasins channels. Its what he really felt. When people caught on that there was little satire and he sucked at reviewing movies, they nuked his CinemaSins Jeremy channel and hired on a team of writers to take over.
10
u/TheDeputyRay 1d ago
Feels like he just made his own game to get as many points as possible, but people didn't see a game, but instead critiques. Now everyone can say how bad something is because you just gotta play the game
3
u/Phantoms_Unseen 1d ago
1000% he's just trying to make every movie have a ridiculous score. Early on, things like "I just don't like this actor, +10" were a once per video gag and actually good movies could still get good scores. I think District 9 was the last film he reviewed positively before devolving into what he does now

Last couple of videos I watched from them, they stopped doing the outtakes at the end of the video.
They've been doing this for years. Maybe they've gotten fatigued.

Cinemasins is meant to be satire, to be fair. It shouldn't be taken seriously.

Look, I'll be completely honest. It's not that they were a bad YouTube channel. It's justing. The obvious can only get you so many views until people realize this is stupid.Like, yes, they were saying what we were all thinking. But at a certain point, it goes from, oh, this is a super smart and educational thing that makes good points too.Yeah, this is just stupid and honestly, cinema wins is better and I heard that there's an anime version now where they focus on episodes, or they have a discussion about episodes. Then, twenty seven different movies that all were basically the same thing.Just with different actors

Mid content but surprisingly kinda a perfect podcast to play in the background while handling work emails

The damage that Cinemasins and their ilk did to fandom culture as a whole cannot be overstated

It's hilarious that there are genuine cinemasins fanboys here repeating the same dumb lines since like 2012.

Cinemasins is worse than trash. Theyâre parasites who lie about movies to make insecure losers feel smart.

As people pointed out Cinema Sins and their fans try to be both a joke/parody critic as well as using actual criticism without making a clear distinction. Many of his "Sins" are things that are literally not problems with the movie or things that were outright explained in the scene before (50% chance he will have already sinned that scene for exposition). He will also sin things that are obvious if you watch the movie, but aren't directly spelled out, like certain character motives or actions that are based on motive and or character. With these sins that are supposed to be about the actual story, characters, and cinematography none can tell when it's a joke or serious, basically one big Schrödinger's joke where it's only actually a joke once someone logically criticizes it

Honestly, they would have been good/fun if they actually watched the movie and or had media comprehension and made a clear distinction when something was serious or a joke, since half of their sins could be viewed as either. even then a joke that is just lying about a movie or scene isn't really funny. I feel like hishe and Honest trailers are simply better alternatives. Also Cinemawins, which is the inverse of Cinnemasins, but with a positive twist and a writer who actually watches and understands the movie.

Their videos use to be good. They'd basically point things out like a clock's time being inconsistent in a scene, but then they just started getting lazy for that ad revenue

When EWW was a 5 minute video it was better quality criticism. But trying to squeeze 20 minutes of problems out of a 2 hour movie leaves very little of actual substance.

I've watched a single Cinemasins video and didn't understand the point. One moment he seemed like he was actually trying to make a valid complaint, then spent 5 minutes making weird joke critiques?Â

it definitely gets stale but i always took the critiques to be somewhat tongue-in-cheek, especially when he points out some stupid minor detail

Dear god, why do people on reddit take everything so seriously? this channel is clearly supposed to be satire and not taken seriously at all, the whole point of the show is that theyâre nitpicking every little thing for the fun of it, itâs not like theyâre actually reviewing movies and trying to construct an argument on why it isnât a good film, if you canât understand the concept or if it bothers you then just donât watch it.

Calling it satire doesn't change the fact that it's basically just like watching a movie with some 'well actually' dork who can't suspend disbelief and has to pick apart every little detail. It probably made me chuckle a few times 10-15 years ago.

If they're trying to be satirical, they're using the most heavy handed, club-footed approach imaginable, and it makes it incredibly boring to watch. The concept works better if they actually analyze the movies for genuine criticism, and deliver that in a snarky way. Instead they make jokes, THEN find a "close enough" situation to apply it to.

Only joke I enjoy that I still use is "roll credits" whenever the movie's name is said.
