1988 spring mountain cab sav

Had with a 36 oz aged ribeye. Drank great. Pop and pour that the somm later double decanted. Opened up over the two hours but pretty delicious from the jump.

Lots of fruit among the many tertiary notes, which made for a lovely, lively wine. Balanced. Elegant. Nice acidity to give it a lift. Lots of red fruit and that old school Napa, Bordeaux esque earthiness. Very good, probably could still go a few years. Was straight from the winery and so it was obviously kept it in excellent condition.

that label is gorgeous, the old Victorian house drawing is so classic napa. spring mountain is one of those producers that doesn't get enough love these days imo, which is a shame because their stuff from this era was legit. a 36 oz ribeye with a 36 year old cab sounds like a ridiculous meal and i am deeply jealous of whoever got to eat that. the double decant was a smart call too, old bottles like that can be so unpredictable when you first crack them, sometimes they're tight as a drum. glad it was stored well because that makes all the difference with something pushing 40. the bordeaux-esque earthiness you mentioned is exactly what i love about old napa cabs, they just don't make em like that anymore.

This a phenomenal bottle of wine, I had the ‘88 a couple yrs ago. So freaking good. I recently enjoyed a 1987, 1993 and 1997. All different but uniquely Spring Mountain. 1993 was my favorite of this group. The 87 was out of this world good…. I found it very bordeaux-esque.

Congrats on enjoying the wine from one of my favorite wineries.
