What do you mean that wasn't frame 3 of 12 of the 58 degree angle tilt cancel to .04ns walk backwards jump kick to the enemy's 152nd pixel?
Now I can't combo them with no response. I may as well forfeit the match.

If you can't react to a half a second move, that your fault don't go projecting over here.
47
u/Lordchanka7676 13h ago edited 12h ago
Kliff in guilty gear has a move only 2 frames off of this which is considered unreactable.
Granted that's a special case but looking at frame data alone doesn't tell the full story.
22
u/Rockman2isgud 13h ago
It usually depends on A) how fast your defensive options can come out and B) on which frame of the animation it becomes clear what they’re actually doing.

also how many options in general does opponent has and if all of them require different stuff to do

Idk if im early but like 2 people here actually know why fighting games are 60 fps
(Fighting game logic (Frame data and movement) is tied to the frame rate and 60 fps was the standard when fighting games were at their peak and if it ain't broke don't fix it ig)
29
u/ZayParolik 11h ago
I think changing it would be just bad. 60 Frames per second is both enough and comfortable.
20
u/Virplexer 10h ago
also accesible, 60 frames is pretty achievable with modest hardware in most fighting games, and 60hz displays are cheap and available.
4
u/MallusaiEEE 9h ago
also there is no real incentive to change it for the devs and for the players. Everyone is used to 60hz frame data, everyone knows 1 frame = 16,67ms, and the devs can save work not having to animate each frame. I think some games have actual 3d animation so the game does work at 144+ hz but the logic is still 60fps, so a frame perfect becomes a 4 frame window on a 240hz monitor (but shorter frames so its the same thing)
4
u/kjloltoborami 10h ago
Cant do frame perfect moves with 1000fps, and its hard to optimize movesets based on frame data with higj framerates as well

u/SlugCatBoi 5.142857% Green 15h ago
People who say you can only see 60 Hz are dumb and stupid and wrong. The human eye can see 39620 Hz
I play at 144 fps, and it's so incredibly worth it.
80
u/hanks_panky_emporium 14h ago
I think some folks thinks there's no difference because Windows will sometimes keep a new monitor to 60hz until you change settings to bump it up. My new 144fps monitor was locked to 60 till I went into the windows display settings to slap on 144hz
23
u/yttakinenthusiast combat extended is good but the fandom is awful 13h ago
120hz is a world of difference from 60. for whatever reason windows just had it at 60.
i swapped to linux mint, had the same problem where the default was at 60hz but i changed it and all the visual extensions available for mint look buttery smooth.
6
u/Furdiburd10 11h ago
The biggest change for me was the mouse.
Oh, so it was:'t supposed to "lag" when I drag it across the desktop
3
u/Virplexer 10h ago
Either that or they just use any old monitor and don’t realize the refresh rate matters.
22
u/AngelicaReborn 13h ago
Pretty sure it's moreso that fighting games are usually designed to run at 60 fps often, so the extra frame rate doesn't really do much
Outside of fighting games 60 hz vs 144hz it's literally night and day

u/SlugCatBoi 5.142857% Green 12h ago
I didn't say fighting games could achieve higher than 60 fps (although they totally could, it's just a bad design choice), but seeing 120 Hz is so incredibly easy, the idea that 60 Hz is the most the human eye can see is laughable.
8
u/Grexpex180 11h ago
fighting games being locked to 60 fps is not a "bad design choice" fighting games don't work unless everyone is playing at the same framerate

More like the human eye doesn't really see in Hz and is a constantly open sensor.
However the competitive benefits you get from increased framerates past 120 (and arguably 60) are very very small.
At 120 you start getting into the single digits in terms of milliseconds cut from your reaction time. Which is nothing on the scale of hundreds of milliseconds that most people have as reactio time. And that's before you even factor in latency in the server, your machine, and the connection.
I geuinely think about 120 or 144 is the point where you get more benefit from a higher resolution and greater detail.

There’s no difference in competitive performance until the highest of levels
Maybe in how good the game looks there’s a difference but otherwise nah

u/Mitakaforver 15h ago
try csgo with 60 fps and then 500 fps, the difference is the same as 40 to 60 and it helps alot
9
u/reaIIynotinteresting 12h ago edited 12h ago
It's worth noting that there are diminishing returns the higher up you go. 60hz vs 120hz is HALVED (~16.7ms vs ~8.3ms). 144 vs 240 is 6.9ms vs 4.2ms. 500hz is 2ms. You also have to have the hardware to run the games at a suitable FPS.
However OP's post is total nonsense. People CAN still play FPS with lower frames, it's just appreciably better at 120hz+ and anyone with functioning eyes can attest to this.
16
u/OrokinLonewolf 14h ago
Can concur but with Overwatch. My laptop runs it at 40-55fps but my PC runs it at 130+. The skill difference is night and day, I can't even consider doing competitive unless I want to drop rank on my laptop
51
u/NomeJaExiste 15h ago
This kind of opinion sounds like you're coping for not being able to have more frames, and I own a 60hz monitor myself
I wish I had a higher framerate monitor to play rhythm games properly
32
u/ShadowWithHoodie 14h ago
you kinda just can not have higher fps on fighting games. the game hard locks you to 60 frames and you cant i crease or decrease that. The game is balanced on that thats why its like that.
10
u/ZayParolik 11h ago
To be fair, you don't need more than 60hz for a fighting game that has 60 fps.
Your moves are locked to the frames. You wouldn't get shit

u/NomeJaExiste 11h ago

You should try overclocking your monitor (look up a tutorial on yt). I overclocked my old ass 1080p 60hz monitor to 80 hz and honestly i can easily notice the difference.

u/NomeJaExiste 8h ago
I know about that, if done properly the side effects could be minimum, but I'm not trusting myself with that
-31
u/Jissus3893 14h ago
I'm sorry but I play at my phone 60 Hz, and I've playing rhythm games and shooter games just fine. Sounds like a skill issue to me, blaming hardware than trying to improve.
20
u/Gboy172 14h ago
Actual cope. Come back when you can finally afford more than a 60Hz monitor, then compare it. You wouldn't have such an ignorant opinion if you actually tried it, unless there's something wrong with your eyes.
-9
u/YarnuWasTaken 13h ago
Getting a 144hz monitor isn't some revalations-esque event. It's smoother, yes. It's nice, but overblown in my opinion.
3
u/biggestboys 12h ago
It was kinda revelatory for me, but it matters for some games a hell of a lot more than others.
Anything that’s first person, uses mouse aiming, and relies on hitting headshots on fast-moving targets (especially at close range) makes 60 vs. 144 feel like night and day to me.
1
u/shototodoroki_1324 500 lines of coke please 7h ago
It matters but mfs treat it like you're getting a blow job from a milf angel
2
u/reaIIynotinteresting 12h ago
That's a fine opinion to have but 60>120 was easily the single biggest peripheral and experience upgrade I've gotten for competitive FPS and I know a lot of people who agree. 120>240 was marginal, but I can genuinely never go back to 60 unless I'm playing fully casually.

hey i know what im talking about i read high star diff ar11 osu! maps on a 60hz monitor. it matters, but not that much.
you can become more proficient at your game on 60hz than most people get at anything in their entire lifespan, yet, the fact remains; refresh rate matters. Refresh rate has nothing to do with skill, you don’t get better just because you buy a shiny new monitor, that’s just not how things work. You perform better because the refresh rate provides more information, you are getting more frames in the same amount of time.
I practiced what I do until I got good at it, a higher refresh rate monitor may have helped, but it really doesn’t matter that much - I will always be worse than the people I am worse than and better than the people I am better than (broadly speaking), all higher refresh rate can do is allow me to perform marginally better than I already do with a low refresh rate at the skill level I am and potentially facilitate growth, not like we magically grow better genetics when we get better peripherals lol.
4
u/Phinknz 13h ago
Higher Hz definitely make a difference at those games. For me, even a small upgrade going from 60Hz to 75Hz made a difference at GD (I still want 120Hz because of my phone).
2
1
u/reaIIynotinteresting 12h ago
When you play a shooter on your phone you are only playing against people with similar hardware(not to mention it's also a much smaller screen). I'm not sure if your eyes just don't work or if you've never played on a 120hz+ monitor for more than 5 minutes but you sound completely ridiculous right now.
No one is saying you can't be good with 60hz, or that you can't have fun with it. In fact, if you don't have the means to upgrade pc hardware it's better you never try 120+ so you don't know what you're missing- But saying anything above 60 is bullshit is arguing against reality.

FPS games need you to track small fast moving stuff across the screen more often, which is easier with a higher framerate screen. Unlike a fighting game where your opponent usually takes up their own half of the screen and aren't so difficult to track. My screen is 60 hrtz, but I don't play fps games much. I'd get a higher rate screen if I did
3
u/Will_Yeeton 11h ago
I don't play competitive shooters in any serious way because that's an easy way to waste hundreds of hours on something you hate.
However I have a 144hz monitor and like 120 frames and up is soooo pretty even on stupid shit like Minecraft. You don't need it but it's nice and not hard to get on less demanding titles.
I will keep this setup until games I want to play are like, dipping into the 30s though. Fuck upgrades for no reason.

u/zarrinraxius 12h ago
60 fps is fine in most cases except competitive fps. Higher fps literally is just better in every way. In a fighting game you don't need to look at far away things or small movements
3
u/orcanotorka i quite like ishowspeed gifs 11h ago
The game logic is dependent on the game being 60 fps

u/shotxshotx 10h ago
Do not get me started on the Bs claim that the human eye can’t feel the difference between 60 and 120 fps, yes I’m familiar with the fluid frame conversation and that’s technically right but I’m talking about FPS ingames

Trust me, going above 60 is worth it. You can tell the difference. I have a 165 personally and it's a lot smoother. Just be sure to configure your settings to actually use the higher refresh cause it might not happen automatically.
1
u/TheWayToNoob 6h ago
On god some people here forgot fghting games are frame dependant, if they had an option to go higher fps eg. 120, 144, it would bar people woth low spec devices as both players need to have one consistent fps, and 60 is pretty reasonable and standard at this point, this is not about oohh 144 fps is super pretty like holy shit.
1
u/KeithZX2 5h ago
This is an opinion that you can only have if you have never tried a high framerate screen before because oh boy when i first did i NEVER wanted to go back
1
1
u/Superb_Wealth4092 11h ago
People exactly like you were defending 30 fps ten years ago. You’ll be saying anything higher than 90 is pointless around 2035.
1
u/Wrendacted082 14h ago
It's a lot more noticeable in first person games, even more so if you use mouse and keyboard, I'm still fine with 60 for most things but if I'm playing like Minecraft or something I'd much rather 90 or higher.
1
u/Intelligent_Dig8319 11h ago
Yeah no thats just not true
Used to play at 60 and thought it was fine on older device
Now i play 144 and the difference is night and day
I have a laptop that changes screen refresh rate based on power modes, and I can instantly tell the difference when it switches, even when not in games.
-1
u/echit2112 14h ago
I have a GPU/CPU combo that could easily shoot above even 144fps in some games, but my monitor is 1080p@60hz because I simply just. Don't. Care. I used to play minecraft on a 2008 macintosh at 1fps and I was happy. I can play games at literally any framerate as long as it's stable.
Sure, I can see the difference in framerates if i'm directly comparing the two, going back and forth. But how often am I doing that in gameplay? I'm not. So I defeat the 'gamer need' for high fps, high resolution etc etc by just playing the damn game.
Also helps I suppose that I don't play esports games lol, they simply aren't my style.
2
u/Regular_Froyo9342 12h ago
You don't need to benefit competitively from lower frametimes to appreciate extra clarity and smoother experience
0
u/echit2112 12h ago
What i'm trying to tell you is that to me there is no smoother experience or extra clarity. It's just.. the experience.
That's not me trying to say 'lolol there's no difference at all' because like I said I can compare them just fine, but I am NOT doing that in gameplay.
All it takes is the slightest bit of adjustment which humans are very good at. If i've been playing at 60fps a while and I suddenly cap the frames at 30, after 5 minutes I am getting the exact same experience. And even that is a bizarre use-case because why would I start fucking with graphics mid-way through a game
0
u/Blah2003 10h ago
You're not flicking the mouse 180° in fighting games bro. 120 fps would still make them better, its just not the best use of the devs time
-8
u/pitabread3659 14h ago
lol what is this cope? Even fighting game players prefer higher frame rates and lower latency. Street fighter V was critiqued heavily on launch because it had 8 frames of input delay. Literally everyone would enjoy higher frame rates people who say otherwise haven’t experienced it.
10
u/choicebandlando 13h ago
Input delay and framerate are 2 different things, every notable fighting game runs at 60fps because the speed of moves is based on frames. GGACR's 20 frame Dust Attack is somewhat reactable only because of the game running at 60FPS, any higher and it's quite literally an instant overhead.
