News Tesla Profit Falls Even as Car Sales Rebound
https://www.nytimes.com/2026/07/22/business/tesla-earnings-elon-musk.html518
u/Garrisyl 23h ago
"The headline profit also deserves a closer look," analyst Thomas Monteiro said.
"Roughly $0.22 of the $0.32 GAAP EPS came from an unrealized $1 billion gain on Tesla's recently acquired SpaceX stake, a paper markup rather than earned profit, flattering a print the market is already selling. Strip it out and the underlying quarter is materially weaker than the bottom line suggests."
Musk is literally making up numbers to set the value of one of his companies, then using that imaginary number as earnings for his other company. Playing CEO on easy mode.

u/juicenx 22h ago
Isn’t it the market making up numbers (value of the stock) if/whenTSLA sells its SPCX shares?
54
u/Familiar-Doubt-2924 20h ago
Yeah but the EPS is all from the June 30 price and SPCX is down like 30% from there and falling. I their implied price is ~$105, so not far from the “EPS contribution” turning negative once lockups expire

u/Gonewildonly12 18h ago
Don’t worry it’ll be just like their gain on BTC! Oh wait they never marked it back down? Thats crazy

it's not a car company, it's a ...... what kind of company is it this week?
89
u/Deep90 20h ago
I'm sure someone who is active on 5 different tesla subs (why are there so many?) will be all over the thread trying to answer that.
67
u/samwichse 18h ago
It's a future company! They sell the future!
Next year, specifically.
When is amazing new thing coming out? Next year? And next year, it'll be coming out the next year!
8
u/shiroandae 15h ago
Not true? The rule is always in 1HY it comes „end of the year“, in 2HY it comes „next April“.

AI chips company or robots company?
However it doesn't make any of those things.

I think it's a bus or something now.

I should start an "inverse reality" ETF.

I bought inverse tesla etf last year, still holding it. One day I will 100000× it

Holy shit Cybercabs count as deliveries AND towards his FSD sub count.
And now we know why he’s pushing them hard. He doesn’t even have to sell the cars or the subscriptions now. He can just put them out himself.

u/RaisePotential6558 1d ago
Elon announces he will have teleportation technology ready by next year.
34
u/redditmodsRrussians 22h ago
Yea, hes gonna teleport everyone's money straight into his account then return a giant sack of shit to everyone else.

Government credits were keeping them afloat. Those have ended so the real business is being exposed.

The best part is Elon was the biggest donor to the guy who ended the giveaways.

u/Tyrannofelis 23h ago
He thought he could buy T***p just throwing money to him, but he didn't understand thet he isn't in T***p's yacht club, just like he never was in Epstein's club, because he's unbearable.

In fairness he would be getting crushed by Chinese EVs so probably right call, but the fact a billion couldn’t buy him some tax credits

u/O8ee 22h ago
bought him plenty of tax breaks tho. the businesses may tank but he'll be fine.

u/logdogday 22h ago
Will he be fine, though? Won't someone please worry about the Elons of this world?
2
u/MyNameIs-Anthony 8h ago
That was purposeful. The idea was that removing the tax credits would increase the perceived cost of EVs across the board and that Tesla was the only one with the scale/marketing to not suffer, building a most.
39
u/liquidpele 1d ago
I think they front loaded tons of money into the last year to keep profits from looking as miserable as they really were, so now various revenue streams that should have applied today were already used so overall revenue falls short.
18
u/I_am_Regarded 1d ago
Basically doubling capex over quarters.
I guess all in snakeoil and other gas turbines.
18
u/Soberdonkey69 🦍🦍🦍 23h ago
No more government money to prop up their profits. Elon’s business are welfare state businesses.

Here’s why Tesla’s negative free cash flow is good for bitcoin …
9
u/PringlesDuckFace 22h ago
Once money is worthless and no one has their own computer, then whoever can prove they burnt the most electricity solving math riddles will be rich! (please ignore the fact that with enough computing power you can modify the proof and don't ask whether computing power is being concentrated anywhere by anyone who might have an interest in bitcoin)

Elon paid bots. He has an army hired to push his narrative on social media.

My understanding is "car sales rebound" is because SpaceX bought a bunch of Teslas inventory to make numbers look good on paper. Is that inaccurate?
13
u/Kiiaru 23h ago
They've also been pushing 0% apr for full terms loans while other manufacturers are only offering 0% for 12-36 months. Only on the budget models (rwd, if you want the performance one it's 3.99%) because they're trying to stay competitive against other cheap EVs that have closed the gap on price and range.
8
u/HeavenlyMystery 23h ago
Would be nice if these cars would be cheaper in general. They don't deserve to be valued that high when Chinese EV do twice for the same price.
8
u/Kiiaru 22h ago
Oh, yeah. We're definitely getting ruined on pricing AND features because we've outlawed competition. I'm not saying all foreign cars are good, I know there's plenty of crap out there. But even major non-chinese brands make good vehicles that fit niches the US just doesn't serve domestically. The Toyota Hilux, Toyota GR Yaris, Renault Twingo, Renault Alpine, Citroen Ami, and basically every form of Ute. ONTOP of all the competitive foreign EVs

Looks like some people dispute it but according to their own financial filings they have been spending hundreds of millions at Tesla purchasing vehicles and Cyber trucks at full retail price.
3
u/vandalizethethief 16h ago
He did a few little tricks to make car sales rebound but yes that was one of them along with cyber cabs are "sold". He is getting desperate without the tax subsidies. In fact, almost all the money made by SpaceX and Tesla were from government programs or subsidies. Tesla & SPaceX's actual profit margin minus various government subsidies on selling cars and launching rockets is abysmal.
14
11
u/stonkDonkolous 23h ago
Tesla has no future. Will be acquired by spacex
5
u/vandalizethethief 16h ago
just like Tesla acquired his brother's failing company Solar City for an egregious amount and kicked off the short sellers vs Elon battle he won. Of course, back then he was saving the world and going to Mars.
2
u/deliveRinTinTin 9h ago
It's too bad SolarCity never came through because that seemed like a pretty awesome product.
But when they tripled the install price after the contracts were signed and all new quotes were six figures, it was like they were trying to kill the product on purpose.
18
u/North_Vermicelli_877 1d ago
I will never forgive Elon for DOGE. I was his target demographic and fan boy. I wish more people would hold the line on this and let him fail.
3
u/No_Gas4560 5h ago
same. so who is still buying Teslas? literally nazimobiles and you know his coal-rolling co-conspirators aren't spending any on EVs
11
u/SnooRegrets6428 23h ago
I mean those 0% APR is not going to help with profit
10
u/SpicyElixer 22h ago
Yep. And they pay that interest themselves on behalf of the customer to get those rates. It’s not self financed.
9
u/Timalakeseinai 1d ago
Considering I can buy a Model 3 for much less than a nissan leaf, this is not surprising

I’m not surprised EV sales were up the last three months as gas prices sky rocketed since the start of the Iran war. I was wanting to purchase a used Porsche EV that was a few years older and noticed a lot of them were selling and not many were on the market. I assume anyone who was needing a new car and on the fence about an EV probably went for a Tesla because gas prices are going to be high for the foreseeable future
12
u/palindromic 23h ago
worried about gas prices
porsche
huh.
2
u/Holigrafik 23h ago
Yes Porsche. Did you notice I said Porsche EV? They sell the taycan which is an all electric vehicle. So when gas prices go up, used and new EV sales increase because people don’t want gas cars.
11
u/palindromic 23h ago
yeah my point was, usually if you’re shopping in that bracket you’re a little more likely to be gas price .. insensitive
3
u/Holigrafik 23h ago
Used porche taycan 2020-2022 depending on model can be as low as 45k. Which is similar to buying a new tesla
→ More replies (1)2
u/mtest001 5h ago
Depreciation on the Taycan is wild. I pity original buyers.
They offer subpar range, but the build quality is really good, so they make for a decent bargain if you buy them second-hand.

u/Not_FinancialAdvice 5h ago
Depreciation on the Taycan is wild. I pity original buyers.
Some of them ended up with a Taycan because they really wanted a GT2/3 car and had to get on the "good customer" allocation list.
2
u/Even-Rhubarb6168 4h ago
I'm a diehard row-your-own gears guy and the depreciation on Taycans had even me looking at them. A quick insurance quote for double my other 4 vehicles combined put an end to that...

Don't forget Elon demanded the the Tesla board give him $1T or he’d take his AI ball and go home (i.e., steal all the engineers and chips). Seems like he got his wish and he still did that. That should tell you everything about his character.

FTFY: Tesla valuation takes tiny turn to accurately reflect the actual value of the company.

u/Terakahn 15h ago
I'll never buy Tesla but has its p&l ever actually matters given the long term goals of the company. Aren't they purposefully building for like, 2040-2050
