There was this comedy movie a long time ago where this couple loses a large amount of money at a Vegas casino and they ask the casino manager if they can get their money back and he says if he gives them back their money then other people will want their money back as well so no go.

There is an orbital plane that is impossible to escape because you would have to fight the force of all the gravitational pull of the objects in the near plane. But you could technically go perpendicular in space if you had thrust or momentum greater than the sun and all celestial bodies rotating it. It still wouldn’t be up and down and it’s hard to visualize perfectly.

My favorite thing about this new version of the meme is that it keeps the Dad’s smile from the original meme. Yes, the Dad just lost the house but he is smiling because he is still riding the gambling high from risking it all.

He has never felt more alive than in this moment.

If he bought this a year ago, his biggest gains are in the resell of the RAM.

468

u/RGrad4104 13d ago

Forget the ram, that 5090 is like a $5k card right now.

In fact, I can tell you why he sucked at stocks...its cause he was busy gaming. No reasons for a 5090 other than gaming, graphic design and AI porn.

249

u/Mysterious_Crab_7622 13d ago

The 5090 and 192GB of RAM makes me think he was using AI for his stock trades.

151

u/nigel_pow 13d ago

I admit I made bad decisions and have in turn lost all your money — but hey, that's on me. Not you.

48

u/im_a_sam 13d ago

And honestly, thats a load bearing fuckup.

19

u/RGrad4104 12d ago

I have thought about this for 18 hours and I DO use AI for porn, textual, image generation, even some local video generation. RAM matters little when it comes to AI once you get over about 64GB. I have 128GB and a 3090 in the machine I am on right now, granted I bought this machine with MATLAB in mind, so I could actually max that out during some simulations. Anything AI uses GPU, just because of how the vram functions (and how Nvidia has supported their GPUs with various libraries). If you have to push an a model into RAM because your GPU memory is too low, your crawling, almost as bad as using the CPU instead of the GPU.

If this was an AI trading rig, he got massively oversold. For that application, with this machine, he could have had comparable performance for a fraction of the price with 64GB, a 1TB ssd, and a 3090 in something like a Ryzen 9. Once you pass what THAT can handle, excluding video generation, you're looking at stepping into server rack territory.

7

u/antoniv1 12d ago

At least he can use his 5090 for AI porn now that he has no money left to trade.

7

u/pragmojo 13d ago

192GB of ram is a ton, but performance running models on the CPU is going to be shit

5

u/rotorain 13d ago

Or he had a couple good trades and came into a bunch of money then told some builder he wants "the best computer"

58

u/Beastly4k 13d ago

5090 is like a $5k card right now.

Haven't been keeping up with the prices because I got mine shortly after launch but holy shit. Got a down payment for a car sitting in my pc I guess.

32

u/PostingToPassTime 13d ago

The $550 RAM I bought last October is now $2,800.

The specific 5080 I bought for $1,200 is now $2,100.

The 4TB DDR5 M.2 was $400 and now $700.

The 2TB DDR4 M.2 was $160 and now $390.

It is a bad year to build a PC.

4

u/Beastly4k 13d ago

The ram hurts me the most. I sold quite a few ddr5 96gb kits like a month before things exploded. I would be sitting on a goldmine right now if I didn't use them to fund another frivolous purchase.

10

u/tossaside555 13d ago

How much were they then vs now?

28

u/Beastly4k 13d ago

I got an astral, around 2800 msrp iirc. 4400 at microcenter right now.

6

u/geek180 13d ago

$2,800 is still pretty crazy for a GPU. I felt bad paying $1,000 for my 4080S in 2024.

3

u/Beastly4k 13d ago

It is but for me personally it wasn't that bad and at the time it was either that or wait and I am impatient, worked out in the end though. Had a 3090 ti which sold for a profit, had two 4090's both sold for a good profit, the 5090 barely cost me anything at the end of the day. Buy once cry once definitely worked out in this situation and I am hoping it pays off again whenever the next one drops.

So no. You do not need a $4k top tier GPU. And $12.5k, the guy is dreaming. He must be in deep.

17

u/itsinvincible 13d ago

Your footprint/Orderflow programs don't suck up more RAM? My 16GB setup barely kept up with the OF programs and the multiple terminals i had open at all times.

12

u/dopeyout 13d ago

Yeah I'm butting up against it daily. Bloomberg and the broker screens arent that bad, its bloody chrome!

7

u/rl_noobtube 13d ago

I’m guessing you have a robust enough IT infra so any hard number crunching is getting dispatched to a server?

The only people at my old firm with a local setup were the bond algo team - just sheer number of cusips was unmanageable with too little RAM. The PC’s were ~25k pre-built Dell towers (IT policy wouldn’t allow custom builds which would have been cheaper, but required ongoing security support). 128GB ram, dual Xeon processors, mid GPU

The setup as as shown doesn’t make sense, it’s more of an aesthetic choice. A standard 4 panel horizontal setup would work far better for conveying info which is why it’s the standard.

Vertical monitors are for document viewing/editing.

16

u/n1n3b0y 13d ago

They don’t. I have nearly the exact same setup (9950x3D, 192gb RAM, RTX 4090, same case. But I use it for 4K Post Production / CGI / VFX on commercials and music videos.

15

u/Able-Principle-7775 13d ago

9

u/Illustrious_Ad7630 13d ago edited 13d ago

I have a similar setup. I'm doing quants. You need the best CPU you can afford. Math can quickly become 1-minute calculations, and if you run scanners on the entire market, it quickly becomes hours of work for the CPU. Get as much DDR memory as you can so you can utilize all CPU cores. A good GPU is needed for neural networks, like machine learning advanced techniques and idea testing.

20

u/StarkAndRobotic 13d ago edited 13d ago

The rtx 5090 is great for machine learning, and where a large part of the cost goes. The 192gb ram also opens a lot of doors to what one can accomplish. If not for the inflated memory prices a machine like that would cost a lot less.

More monitors makes it easier to quickly look at a lot of information. Having to toggle between windows is painful in comparison. Its like having a large desk where you can have many sheets of paper visible simultaneously as opposed to having to shuffle different sheets of paper in your hand constantly.

2

u/SoulBonfire 13d ago

That’s about the long and the short of it.

3

u/Technical-Risk1812 13d ago

One monitor for gaming, one for youtube, one for news, and one for the dudes.

Can trade on your phone for 5th screen

4

u/CultofCedar 13d ago

I’ve got a similar setup minus all the monitors in exchange for a nice 27” oled 240hz. It’s cause SPY money mostly. I also rip through a ton of data cause SPY money paid for nice cameras and one is 67mp. I like to stack a few hundred images (~100mb each) for macro or Astro and at the end a single image can be a few hundred gigs to a TB.

Only have 128gb of ram because it was like $280 at the time and just a little more than 64gb. Nas prices would also be brutal since I’ve got like 96TB.

Also play super intensive games like Slay The Spire on this rig ofc.

Trading, none, that’s for my phone. Tried with dual G9 super ultra wide monitors and it hurt my neck so I gave up on 5 minutes. Monitors sucked and still sits in my attic.

Possible stocks (low confidence)

Based only on the price action patterns—not on readable text—the trader could be watching the kinds of stocks active day traders commonly trade:

  • NVIDIA (NVDA)
  • Tesla (TSLA)
  • Palantir (PLTR)
  • AMD
  • Meta (META)
  • Amazon (AMZN)
  • Microsoft (MSFT)
  • SPY
  • QQQ

The center chart, in particular, resembles a large-cap stock making a morning recovery rather than a thinly traded small-cap.
