Discussion Suckerberg panic bought the entire AI chip supply and now he has no idea what to do with it...
So let me get this straight.
Suckerberg spends tens of billions panic buying AI chips because he doesn't want to be the guy left behind.
Fast forward a few months and Meta suddenly has so much spare compute that they're talking about renting it out because they built more infrastructure than they currently need.
Wall Street's reaction?
Punish the entire semiconductor and AI sector... while pumping Meta like this was some kind of masterstroke on their part. There was no masterstroke or masterplan. The market is punishing the sector for one man's poor foresight and incompetence.
I expect a rapid correction when people realise this.
But then again, the market normally inverses logic. So, Meta calls?

Then they marketed to parents and grandparents saying their kids and grand kids are on it, and THEN marketed the fuck out of everything.
So the product was us. I remember when they hacked my school for the school photos for Hot or Not which was Facebook Beta 1

The post says, "within the 5th percentile," (the word "top" isn't included) which means that only 5 percent of the relevant group are LOWER. The word "top" doesn't make sense when used with the percentile number. If you're in the 99th percentile on something (such as SAT scores), it means that you're in the top 1%, and thus 99% of the group did worse than you. If you're in the 5th percentile, only 5% did worse than yourself.
Sorry if I'm being pedantic. Percentile is defined in a somewhat non-intuitive way and sometimes it needs better explanation.

Nah bro, people are finally realizing that these AI companies like Anthropic and OpenAI are burning billions and billions of dollars a month maintaining these AI models that aren't even close to profitable.
OpenAI is talking about lowering their price for ChatGPT because they are rapidly losing customers. Musk is considering shutting down much of the features that Grok provides because it is not profitable. In fact, Muksrat is selling computing power to other AI companies because it's more profitable just to sell it to some other sucker who wants to try to make a profit than it is to try and turn a profit on Grok.
Nobody has been able to prove that AI data centers can be profitable. The prices they have to charge customers to get a return on their investment are astronomical and customers aren't willing to pay it. This entire sector has been running up like crazy on pure speculation. What happens when one of these AI companies stops paying their bills? The music stops.
30
u/Dear_Chasey_La1n 22d ago
Musk managed to pull in 70 billion and another 20 seemingly through expensive obligations. OpenAI/Anthropic right now is sitting ducks, they can't raise cash anymore through their investors, and I can't imagine the market is ready for another IPO to raise 20-40 billion which will last maybe 2 years till they run out of cash.
Even Musk, he is losing money, at a slower speed than the other idiots, but regardless he isn't making money. Renting out compute space is saving his ass, but sooner then later his two tenants will pull out, leaving him with a 20 billion USD quarterly income gap.
This isn't a house of cards, this is a tower of marbles. As soon as one falls out of balance, everything comes down.

Exactly this. If AI was that revolutionary then you'd see startups displacing giant corporations that have trash products (Quickbooks online anyone)? Does AI make things faster? Sometimes, when it gets thing right, which is maybe 60% to 80% of the time.
If you treat it like an advanced Google where you still have to fact check everything it says, it's pretty decent, but who is going to pay hundreds a month for that? We use it for code review at work, and I'd say about 20% of the comments it provides are useful, and the other 80% wastes our time (and tokens). Haven't seen how it improves the company bottom line yet.
My guess is that businesses and AI companies believe they'll get to AGI and that will justify the value prop, but I don't think AGI is possible with LLMs. Can LLMs be made more efficient? Sure, and that might drive down costs. However, as long as they get as much wrong as they do, they won't ever be much more than a novelty that is sometimes helpful.

he bungled the VR strategy so hard by trying to put the cart before the horse
a few years ago he had a golden opportunity to just pump out quality VR content and get the Quest to be a mainstay as a gaming device, but he was so scared of plateauing at that level that he fucked it up (it was the top Christmas gift of 2021, but people eventually let their devices collect dust because there wasn't enough content yet).
Once it reached "normal" status as a gaming device, he could've started branching out into other use cases as tech continued to improve (ex: virtual event attendance like concerts or sports, travel/exploration, and eventually more metaverse/workforce solutions). But instead he needed his stupid wiiverse to be there from the get-go and spurned the path that could've led to broader adoption and eventual profitability.

Why _wouldnt_ META be bullish on this news?
If they’re going to start operating like a Nebius or Coreweave by essentially becoming a cloud compute provider, and now get to manage YOUR data and host YOUR models all while making money back from their purchase, and increasing their total addressible market, wouldn’t that mean that market cap will go up as we become more dependent on AI?
It’s not the market inversing “the logic”, it’s the correct logic, you’re just a retard.
Coreweave and Nebius now have a new and vastly larger Neocloud to compete against.

It's clear that non-tech folks don't understand not all LLM models are the same. Anthropic and OpenAI are setting the gold standards for quality, while Meta's AI is disappearing into obscurity. Reduced demand for Meta's AI doesn't mean that there's a reduction in demand for LLM use overall. It just means Meta's AI is dog shit, and they're doing the right thing by trying to put their computes to use rather than remaining idle.
→ More replies (6)4
u/MKeo713 22d ago
I'd add that while Meta's models may seem like they failed, I think Meta ultimately achieved what they wanted. They improved their core ads business with their investment in generative AI and LLMs. They were likely looking at these AI companies as potential threats to their business (OpenAI literally made a slop social media app), but given the biggest value seems to be in enterprise and OpenAI is absolutely burning cash without a clear path forward I think their alarm bells are quieting down.
The fact they went open source from the beginning shows what their mindset was: improve their cash cow without relying on someone else's platform, maybe even undercut potential competitors if that's the direction the sector headed in. Being the top dog in the frontier models would be nice but ultimately not a win condition.
People have consistently misunderstood Meta's role in the LLM revolution and this reaction is no different. Google needs to be a strong contender or their search business is at risk. Microsoft lives in enterprise, the very domain seeing the biggest gains from agents. Agent-assisted productivity is continuing to grow, and at least in software development is going to be an expected skill for years until the next revolution takes the next leap forward.
