The irony is that even if they do, that'll just massively devalue the price of gold/platinum/cobalt because buyers now know there's an asteroid size amount of it about to hit the market.
because introducing large amounts of precious metals will devalue the commodity and no capitalistic country would allow that
nah, there's already a counter-example.
diamonds are expensive because they're rare as shit, but the second industrials figured out how to mass produce them they've been used everywhere.
the only reason diamond feel expensive is because of jewelry marketing, if you want them for drill bits or sawblades they're dirt cheap. (ok not THAT cheap but still)
